Yeah dude, you're installing a safe into your house. Who cares if it turns into a rental later? there will be a safe for the renters to put stuff in. I mean if it's not bolted to the house in some way it's just a convenient (if heavy) container for thieves to steal.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 01-24-2013

Yep. I would just hate to put $2000 of unnecessary permanent upgrades into a rental property Tongue

Where are you buying at safe that fits in a closet for $2000. Ours that holds like 30 guns, and would take forktruck to move now, was only $1000. You are getting screwed dude.

He's in North Carolina, the California of the South. Who knows what he's paying!

(But yeah, if he's got a costco membership he's definitely paying too much.)

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 01-24-2013

I have friends with Costco memberships! If you have a link to a safe of comparable quality, warranty and fire rating that fits in a closet I am all ears! Smile

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 01-24-2013

24gun with 30min fire for $699.....interesting.

We bought ours at Tractor Supply. So you can check there too!

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 01-24-2013

Are people really that concerned about their gun and fire to spend on a fire safe? Unless you have an heir loom or are concerned about the gubberment taking away your right to replace it, insurance is the way to go.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 01-24-2013

Im not worried about burglary. Mostly guns away from my kid and documents protected from fire.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 01-24-2013

Spend $600-700 on a regular gun safe and spend $100 on a small document/jewelry safe that's also waterproof.

If you really want to meet specific needs and are on a budget, separates safes is the way to go.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 01-24-2013

Well the safes I am considering have shelves for documents/ammo/handguns/whatever, and can hold up to 24 long guns, I will never probably own that many long guns but.... it will hold 10 on one side and the other side houses the shelving. $6-700. So not too bad on the pocket and serves both purposes in one unit.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 01-24-2013

I like the one safe to rule them all concept. No matter what I have a secondary safe for quick access / home defense. Three safes bolted down in my house in three separate locations makes little sense. Also, if I can't acquire high cap magazines or "military style weapons of destruction" in the future, insurance isn't going to do me much good. Not to mention the ammo that is getting harder and harder to find.

Do you have a link to the safe you're looking at? For a safe to be considered fireproof for documents it needs to have a certain hour and degree rating. I haven't seen one in that price range yet that can do it. I am not saying it doesn't exist, just haven't seen it.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - BLINGMW - 01-24-2013

You could consider a cheaper safe and then put something like this in it for documents / data:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.com/SentrySafe-H2300-Fire-Safe-Waterproof-Silver/dp/B000LJOX94">http://www.amazon.com/SentrySafe-H2300- ... B000LJOX94</a><!-- m -->

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 01-24-2013

FYI - Most fire safes are not waterproof and I would be surprised if a $700 24 gun safe was. Protecting from fire is useless if the water used to put the fire out ruins the documents.

If you're really that worried about documents, get a safe deposit box.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 01-24-2013

Ya know I had no idea, so I checked with Cannon. And their CSR informed me that, although they are not marketed as waterproof.resistant. The seal that expands under heat during a fire, will also protect the contents from water until the temperature maxes out the temp rating or 30 minutes passes.

Here is the safe I am considering. It is also carried at BassPro and Cabela's.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 01-24-2013

What if your safe isn't where the fire is? Or your house floods with no fire?

My gun safe is in the basement. If a fire starts in the kitchen then the upper two levels burn until the firemen come and put the fire out. Then, all the water runs down into the basement where the docs in a firesafe would be trashed.

If the docs are really that important to you, don't depend on a fire resistant gun safe to save them.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 01-24-2013

My safe will not be in any of the areas you described I have no basement, and the area I intend to keep the safe cannot be flooded, physically impossible. The docs I intend to protect are PITA to replace docs like Birth Certificates, car titles, and SS cards, so they aren't irreplaceable, just stuff I would rather not have destroyed.

Put all of those documents in a safety deposit box. Never have to worry about them. My family keeps all of that stuff plus passports, savings bonds, etc in one. Not super expensive but not super cheap either. Gives a good piece of mind to not worry about them being lost to a fire, flood, robbery, etc.
