Re: Automotive News Discussion - Sijray21 - 09-21-2015

if you're going to finance a large portion of the car a new car will likely be better, however if you're paying for most of the car outright then a used car will likely be the way to go (unless you really want to get something specific). getting a good rate (ie: less than 2.5%) on a used car is REALLY tough. that being said I've bought 3 new cars/bikes and I'm not sure if i'll do that again. I paid off my GTI last year and it's really nice not having a car payment. My wife's car has about 18 months left on a 36 month loan and we already can't wait to pay it off, but with the low interest rate we got with it being new it doesn't make sense to pay it off sooner.

I'm not sure how the rates are currently, but 0 or near 0% for a new car is really nice when financing. Debt isn't bad as long as it's manageable. I typically always add in 30% additional cost for maintenance and other unforeseen expenses, so as long as you're saving, have your expenses covered, and to leave some buffer in your budget I think you'll be fine. don't forget to get a quote from your insurance company too; rates for young single adults with new things is typically really high (despite the location you're garaging the vehicle). expenses always seem to be more than you expect no matter how much you crunch the numbers...

No mention yet in this thread on VW's massive EPA dickery - I'm amazed at how brazen their actions were here, at least initially until I learn more about what exactly happened. I can only assume this fine is going to massive - not to mention you would think that a class action lawsuit would be possible, no?

I just came here to post this - nice summation of the cluster that is going to unfold:

http://jalopnik.com/your-guide-to-dieselgate-volkswagens-diesel-cheating-c-1731857018

Especially:

Quote:At Volkswagen in the U.S., diesels account for 20 to 25 percent of their sales, and now they can’t even move the newest ones off dealer lots. The company has struggled with the U.S. market over the past decade with a reputation for poor reliability and a lineup that lacked many of the products Americans typically go for, like trucks and large crossovers. The growing diesel sales represented a small but shining ray of hope for them.

There’s also the issue of public outrage. Besides the fact that this is one more egregious example of automakers skirting the rules, you have hundreds of thousands of TDI owners who were sold a false bill of goods. Enthusiasts love the TDI engines for their efficiency and torque, but plenty more buyers opted in thinking they were driving clean, environmentally-friendly cars.

It turns out that’s not the case, and the result will likely be buyback demands, class action lawsuits, concerns over resale value and much more.

I better get over to the group HQ building here and check out the cool cars in that parking garage I hear about before they totally shut themselves off to the public...

I read an article earlier (can't remember where) that speculated a fine at $18 billion. $37,500 for each vehicle sold that did not comply with the EPA standards.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - ScottyB - 09-21-2015

for those of you who may want diesel efficiency but couldn't give a damn about emissions performance, this may be your shining moment to grab a new TDI at an amazing discount!

They can't even sell them right now, but point will be true once they can again.

So, apparently, their stock has dropped (so far) about 23%. Ouch.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - HAULN-SS - 09-21-2015

Im secretly hoping it will be cheaper for them to buyback every car rather than pay the fine. I'm keeping an eye on the forums and stuff for if/when they issue a recall. If the cars take a performance or MPG hit, I wont have it done. The other downside of this is that I bet it is going to hurt used car resale values..either from perception, or actual performance hits. Why spend extra on a TDI if the gains in MPGeez arent that much more than something else not involved in a scandal

Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 09-21-2015

This is kind of a drag since we just bought a 2012 TDI Sportwagen. I hope it doesnt hurt resale, although we'll likely keep it long enough that it isnt really a problem.

Well, look on the bright side. You can join the class action suit and make a few thousand dollars to put towards something else. E63 wagons are nice.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 09-21-2015

I'd settle for a free APR tune

That or I'd take them up on giving us $37.5K for ours :dunno:
If I had to guess I think the stock dropping this much is an overreaction.

A relative drop in the bucket, but there's also this:

http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-vw-subsidies-20150922-story.html

Quote:The federal government paid out as much as $51 million in green car subsidies for Volkswagen diesel vehicles based on falsified pollution test results, according to a Times analysis of the federal incentives.

Now they'll have the IRS on them too.
