i've seen much of the same, its a shell game.  nobody wants to make a post about how they're drinking wine at 11AM in a dark house while the 2 year old naps to dull the anxiety and that they're banking on their tax refund to get out of debt from that big Williams Sonoma order.

keeping up with the Joneses is stupid.

It's odd being down in NC where most wives all are "stay at home" moms.  My wife works half-time still at her old job and mentions every now and then of stopping work.  I think work keeps us somewhat sane, and that's reflected in some of our neighbors....

My wife loves her group of women she hangs out with down here, but remarks every now and then how they are just a  little bit crazy and seem to have lost their foundation. They work all of each other up about every little detail.  All their kids/husbands have every disease/allergy/everything under the sun.  And while I do truly beleive many people have these issues, I doubt every single child in our neighborhood is the 1 of 100k. Otherwise we are a pretty shitty neighborhood.  Tongue

I don't wish unhappiness on anyone... but I try to be as transparent about all the stuff that sucks so it's clear we're not all nannies and traveling and cars and date nights and christmas lights.

Chris dropping big truth bombs!  Absolutely spot on

Neither of us post much on Facebook anymore, frankly because I don't care what people know or think of our lives.  Like every couple neither of us is perfect but we are genuinely happy and I don't need to validate that to anyone.  You would be surprised (or maybe not) how much flak we get from some family members that we aren't posting enough on social media, or that they aren't seeing enough photos of our lives.  I'm sorry, what?  Do I owe you a play by play on my morning coffee, or that Kirkland's run we made this weekend?  I am already anticipating that it will be unbearable when we have kids, wife will probably be forced to post more or face the fury of the family.

I pretty much only post on my public watch Instagram anymore, because its fun and I want to keep building a follower base to connect with other collectors and basically just try to get free stuff.  If people want to try to measure their e-dicks to my life they can look me up and check my accomplishments on LinkedIn or something.

That reminds me, I should probably go update LinkedIn to remind the world how I crushed it again this year Tongue

This is why we created a "family" IG account - to placate remote family members who want to curate my online presence for me.

I occasionally post kid shit on my fb, but I limit it to about 10% of the time because my interests didn't suddenly become 100% my only-cute-to-me offspring. I like cars, and politics, and statistics, and economics, and photography. The people I'm friends with are because we have similar interests. One million pictures of your kids wasn't one of them.

While we're on the topic of things that really grind my gears.....

Parents who post elf on the shelf pictures every day to validate themselves as clever, loving, artsy, playful parents. Get that shit outta here.

This happened to us and apparently its not even that uncommon.

Facebook sucks, but it has uses. I've trimmed my social media down immensely. I think I follow like 20 people on Twitter now and a similar number on Instagram. Facebook, I just remove you if you post something I don't like.

MM friends are the only successful friends I have, so it's not like I see anything to make me jealous.

Sure I don't get the satisfaction of 100+ likes of all of my posts, but keeping the circle small is great.

What about bourbon?  Asking for a friend.  Big Grin

bourbon is malted grains, aka liquid cereal, therefore is considered a brunch item

i liked bourbon a lot more after i became a dad *ahem*

holy shit this.  like, at least make an effort to cover up how you just want rid of your kid for 2 hours.  for you guys about to have kids, be prepared to put in the time wherever you go with them unless its an obvious situation where they're meant to be taken care of by someone else.

we had a lady RSVP the morning before my son's birthday party to bring her daughter. that afternoon i went to pick him up from school and noticed the daughter in question was coughing all over the place with snot dripping down her face.  i had to confront the mom that sorry, daughter's uninvited because she's diseased and maybe, just MAYBE the other 14 kids at the party don't want to go near that nonsense.  she was pretty indignant, i was just confused.  last i talked to her since then...idiots.

i'm headed this way soon. FB is basically so old neighbors/family have access to family pictures easily, because they expect it. its tiring, and aside from the marketplace and some friendly trolling of posts here and there i just resent the time i waste on it anymore.

man you guys around some crazies

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - rherold9 - 12-07-2018

I go on FB for my friends who specifically post funny stuff or keep up with very few old friends/people who have similar interests. I've started posting much less on FB as I used to. I'm more using Instagram and a little bit of Snapchat on occasion. Rarely go on Twitter and have almost deleted it twice in the past week, actually I'll just go delete it now. I'll at least post not so fun moments of track driving or other major crappy things. People who post my life is the best, etc. are the worst.

Social media, mainstream "dating" apps, etc. are overall mostly a determinate to society with the way people have adapted to using them

We use the "family album" feature of Prime Photos. It works well for distributing kidpics and lets the grandparents contribute and they can order super cheap prints. As a bonus a slideshow is the "screensaver" for my fireTV.

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - Steve85 - 12-07-2018

Haha - wait till you get to witness these people at sporting events (when and if you do). Last soccer game of the season, opposing kid challenges for the ball, it pops up hard catching our player in the face knocking him down. No foul, but play stopped for head injury check and one of the parents from the other team yells "Do it again, they have ten more". Fucking disgusting... In a different game, indoor, a free kick when kids make a wall, some bitch yelled "mow'em down". And shit like "You guys need to take out #12!!" Because God forbid their kids actually lose or something.

What has happened in your life that you are calling for the purposeful injury of 12yr old kids?

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - Apoc - 12-07-2018

I think my most obvious "I'm too nice to say fuck you" moment was a family that was invited to my kid's first birthday. They RSVPed they were coming, never showed up, and didn't message to say they couldn't make it. Later that day I got a lame text with some excuse saying they were really sorry they couldn't make it. I didn't bother responding... or telling them their instagram pictures from the mini golf course a mile away had betrayed them.

This same family showed up an hour late to someone else's birthday party with the excuse they had to get the kids some dinner beforehand. Then they left 15 minutes later because they had to rush home to feed their kids dinner. They couldn't even remember their lie 15 minutes later.

So, yeah.... being a parent just magnifies all the bad habits people have.

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - WRXtranceformed - 12-07-2018

I mean if we're going to start the "bad parenting" train, two families in our cul de sac have had CPS called on them. One would lock their screaming girls (2 and maybe 4) in a room and go get drunk and high at a neighbor's house until 1AM and leave the kids by themselves.

Or as was said earlier, people explain that their kid has the flu but let's them run around and play with the other kids in the cul de sac.

RE: You know what really grinds my gears?! - Ryan T - 12-07-2018

Ya’ll are doing a marvelous job at validating our choice not to have kids. All the houses within eye/ear shot of my house are retired couples who cause absolutely 0 drama, and we don’t have any plans to have kids. Bless all ya’ll that do though, it sounds like it sucks.

haha, indoor soccer, for when soccer needs a bit more hockey in it.  good memories from playing that in my high school years, only time i've ever broken a bone.  i'll never forget how many near fist-fights almost went down in the stands with the parents trying to start shit with each other every single game.  easily as entertaining as the action on the actual field.  get on down to ringside and bang that glass Steve!

Maaannnn shit, I hope that's not my future. One family did that at our 3 year old's party last May but we didn't really notice the kid was not supervised. There's gonna be some beef if we actually have to expend any energy watching someone else's kid that got dropped off.
