Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 08-15-2015 Ended up with about 38 channels with final placement, I am cool with that as I think that's most of what you can pick up in this area. Since we talked about bundling as well, TWC just upgraded our internet for free from our 30 down / 5 up (or maybe 50 down I can't remember). I picked up a new modem to handle the new capacity. Here are the results: ![]() While awesome it is super annoying they were sandbagging our service for so long. The reason (they freely admit) is that Google Fiber is in the install phase in Charlotte and they are going to come in and pretty much take over. One weird thing, I am getting those speeds hardwired and wired from my router however my PS4 was only seeing 29 down / 4ish up hardwired or wireless. Doing some research I was able to manually change the DNS settings and that got me to 49 down / 6 up but still not close to what my full bandwidth should be. Apparently Sony purposely restricts bandwidth into the PS Network for stability purposes. I might call Sony customer service just to confirm that. Re: Dish or DirecTV - Evan - 08-17-2015 holy damn thats fast. do you dip much during peak hours ~8pm ? Cable is shared bandwidth so you can take a hit then, though looks like you have plenty of headroom. Re: Dish or DirecTV - BLINGMW - 08-17-2015  that download is 39 times faster than my DSL Re: Dish or DirecTV - Senor_Taylor - 08-17-2015 Those kinds of speeds bring a tear to my eye. Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 08-17-2015 Evan Wrote:holy damn thats fast.I'm not sure I will test it tonight ! It probably does dip significantly; we're in a row of 7 townhomes and there are a bunch more around us so I dunno if we are getting bogged down with all of that local traffic as well Re: Dish or DirecTV - Ken - 08-17-2015 Jesus. I was happy with like 60ish here. Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 08-17-2015 Hardwired At 7:30PM: ![]() At 8:10PM:
Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 12-09-2016 Fun to come back to this and see that my wireless speeds across the house from the router are as fast as my old TWC wired internet. Good riddance. Pulling 500 down / 200 up hardwired on rural fiber for $59.95 / month on promo  Unfortunately at our new crib it's gonna be trickier to get OTA TV. We tried a few in-window placements but none have yielded good results. I gotta crawl in my attic, install an antenna there and run the output outside the house to some box that could distribute it to the outlets throughout the house. Even with all that I'm not sure exactly how it would work, but according to the lookup sites I might get 20 channels at best. We have been using our Roku a lot lately and they have a new offer with Sling that gives you another free Roku (we could use one) if you pay 3 months upfront. At $20 or $25 per month, that's a fee I would probably be willing to soak up for most of the major channels they offer: https://www.sling.com/service Anyone have experience with Sling TV subscription? Also, if you prepay, you get a free Amazon Fire Stick and if you prepay 3 months you get a free Apple TV. It's as clear in image as cable, a couple of buffering hiccups, though it has been getting better. I also think i just need to hard wire it which will help. No Roku app as of yet, but it is coming. Had such a bad experience with Sears once that i take personal pleasure in all their misfortune lately. Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 12-12-2016 I have the same hatred for AT&T after a bad experience with their high speed internet...took that one all the way up to VP level & BBB complaint before it was resolved. Apparently Sling is getting SiriusXM desperate and emailed my wife with another offer for a free Roku if you pay only one month up front instead of three. So I bought their $20 package, can cancel at any time. We'll see how it is....it already paid for itself with the Roku that is coming! Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 03-13-2017 I have to say Sling has been pretty awesome. If we didn't have really high speed internet it probably wouldn't be as good but we have no issues at all buffering, etc. We ended up upgrading to $25 / mo because it gave us a few other channels we needed to catch pretty much all the primetime football games. We were also invited to be a part of Sling DVR beta and it was pretty good. Although they were working out the kinks they are moving forward with it as a paid product. And we got an email today stating that because we were part of that and provided data to make it better, we get Sling DVR now for free...forever!! That's pretty awesome! FWIW, DirecTV Now has been fantastic. Wound up cancelling cable finally and have over 100 channels for $35 bucks including all sports (ESPN1,2, News, FS1, FS2, MSG, Longhorn network(?). SEC). They also added HBO free for a year for being an early adopter, so that's cool too. Only channel i don't get is CBS but i don't really watch anything on there and, if i really need to, i just switch input to the antenna. Both seem like really good options, nice to finally have some realistic choices outside of cable and satellite. Re: Dish or DirecTV - JustinG - 03-13-2017 has anyone looked further into YouTube TV? What are yalls Internet Prices? Cause that is what I ran into, was cheaper to get the package deals at the time vs Internet only + Subscription services. Re: Dish or DirecTV - Ken - 03-13-2017 i'm paying $59/mo for 60MB/s service which allows me to stream two Directvnow TV's and surf the internet with no issues. Our problem was that the package deal had run out (it was $116 anyway, so still more expensive) and was going up to $150ish. For less channels to boot. I could have tried and played the whole, "i'm switching to FIOS" deal and/or actually switch to FIOS but i was tired of it all and figured that DirectvNow i can bring with me anywhere. Also, i paid for phone service when I didn't even own a home phone, just annoyed me. Re: Dish or DirecTV - SlimKlim - 03-13-2017 I pay $80/mo for 100MB/s with Fios Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 03-13-2017 $59.95/mo for 500down/250up Re: Dish or DirecTV - JustinG - 03-13-2017 yea, I am thinking when our promo prices are up in July of 2019, ill look back into cutting the cord again. But for now, we get 100/100, Quantum DVR with 2 boxes, and their Preferred HD package for $127. When we closed on the house it was gonna be $120 a month to have Hulu/Netflix and 100/100 Internet, and it was worth it to me to just not deal with streaming options/limited availability on hulu for $7 in savings a month. Re: Dish or DirecTV - WRXtranceformed - 03-14-2017 Our promo rate is gonna be up again soon and I'm not opposed to looking at a cable option again, although I have to say I have gotten spoiled having my spend limit for TV being in the $25 range. I just don't see the value in paying more than that for something that is, in the grand scheme of things, just a novelty in my wife and I's life. Also will probably move to the 1gig down / 1 gig up speed once this promo rate is up! POWERR |
