Forgive me for turning into Feersty but....Damn, that is a big wing.

Surprised there is still chatter about me in here. Don't you have anything better to talk about?

That's an interesting capitalization of meme. It's apropos in relation to Feersty, I guess.

**know that I am reviving a longer thread...**

DJ, glad you are okay from hitting that wall. I hope the soreness was only temporary and you are doing better now.

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 03-09-2012

I have been terrible updating this thread. Maybe I will do a little bit today.

Thanks for the concern, I was really concerned as I already have a history of herniated discs and the pain was immense after about 2 days and lasted through the week. I could barely turn my head. Doing my first race was a huge challenge for me and fatigued me far faster than I would have thought. I barely got through the races in October.

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 03-09-2012

Just realized that I never updated this with a few missing events. Since this is really good for me to keep track of. Also, I forgot to post about my nationals experience!!!

NASA Nationals 2011 Update:

This event takes place at Mid-Ohio from September 8th-11th. The car changed very little from the Summit August Event, with little changes such as an oil change/fuel filter and new Bimmerworld Premium Studs. I had had a problem during Hyperfest with Wheel Studs. I broke 1 off one side, so I swapped in a new hub (cause stud was stuck in hub) off Mike D'Amicos car and had her ready for the next morning. I brake a stud off the other side for Sunday, incredibly frustrating to say the least. I guessed it was just 1.5 year old studs. So I replaced all of the studs with new bimmerworld...turns out that was not the problem. More on that later.

For nationals, I was lucky enough to recruit the help of Mike D'Amico. First of all, he is an extremely good friend, Second, an extremely good wrencher. He has pretty much been there for everything I have done to my car, and I trust him 100% to work on my car. For Nationals.. I brought EVERYTHING!
2 sets of 245 R6s
One set of 245 A6s
One set of 245 Hoosier Rains
One set of Dunlop Direzzas
One set of RS3s
And every spare part in the world, along with all the tools imagineable.

The truck and race car were filled to the brim!

As we woke up for the first day, it was raining. Bummer! Headed to the track, and it was no better. My first session turned almost dangerous as I could barely see out my windshield how hard it was raining. With no prior knowledge of Mid-Ohio, I was not happy to be trying to learn a track in the rain. Wht a bad way to start nationals!

1st Session: 2:31.5, Current Place: 3rd.

As we neared the second (only 2 sessions a day, aside from saturday that would have 3), the rain clouds started to whisk away, but the track was soaking. So I determined that with the bad weather, Thursday would just have to be viewed as a practice day. Adjusted the wing for a bit more downforce and went for a practice session

After the session, I was required to go to the weigh-in. I would call this home after the Nationals weekend, getting sent there 7 seperate times by the officials.

The next morning...pouring rain! Argh! Not getting much luck here. But during the TT meeting in the morning, the sun popped up. A drying track is better than a wet track. So I proceded throw on my R6s. Reason being is I thought I would have plenty more chances to try with my A6s that have more grip. Not many pictures of the morning session.
The grip was much better now, but still a little wet. However, I was able to finally get some time in on the track that I could actually see! This is where I tell people, Autocross is a HUGE advantage to road racing as well. When you have ever-changing track conditions, an autocrosser, used to having to learn new tracks/layouts quick will still be fast in these times. I set down a 1:38.5. Only .4 seconds off the previous track record. Not bad for a drying track. So off course, sent to impound......to weigh for the 3rd time already, in as many sessions.

Unfortunately the day would be on and off with rain all day. Weather was miserable to prepare in; but I was determined to get in my track time. Went out again on a drying track. Much more grip this time! Good! Wait...whoops...Hit some curbing pretty hard and come in off the track with a rubbing splitter. I had been using a dibond splitter I had gotten off Eric wong with little support. I should not have expected it to last.
I was greeted with great news! The last session of the day Friday I was able to pull off a 1:37.752. This put us in a great mood! Despite a destroyed splitter I had bested the record by almost a half a second! Obviously...impound...again! No surprise there. This time I would be both weighed, and the car fully gone through. Techs were on their hands and knees, under the hood, looking around. I would pass! yes!

After the great news, and the sun was "slightly" shining, we thought, why not? Lets create a splitter now? Only half the event over (I thought I had clinched the whole event but I always try for more).

In pure MM fashion, you have to get creative! Off to Home Depot. A quick look around and I found what I was looking for... The start of my "High tech pressurized organic composite splitter" according to Rex Wink.
First we had to grind off some bolt heads that had literally been shaven off in the incident...

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 03-14-2013

Okay, back from the dead, I will finish up my nationals experience.

Quick Recap:
Nationals 2011 - TTC Class
2 days of rain, run off, destroy splitter but in process get current TTC record and in 1st place
Create new Splitter, drink away the day.

Friday night is also the night for NASA dinner at the jail that they filmed the Shawshank Redemption. We also got to tour around. Going deep in, there were no lights, and to be honest, was creepier than any "spooky house" I have ever been.

Saturday Morning - Day 3 (3 session day)

Weather is clearing up, but there was still plenty of moisture on the ground. At least I could finally see where I was going! I intended to make these count, but was hoping the second session would dry out enough to get really good laps. I may have won (too soon?), but I might as well go out there and throw some laps in.

With a damp track, I only managed to meet my last time of a 1:37.7XX. This didnt put me any further ahead. However, second place had dropped a bit of time and was now in the 1:38.3. Making me sweat a little, but hey, it was still damp. I knew I had lots more time out there, and it was only my first time at the track. I would go for it in the second session.

Saturday afternoon: 2nd Session - dry track, dry skies!

Amazing!! Dry skies and dry track. I was super excited to go show these locals what I was there to do. Warmup Lap comes as I scrub in as much heat into those hoosiers for that first fly-by. Your 1st and 2nd laps are typically the fastest before you catch other traffic and your tires tend to wash away.
1st Hot lap: get stuck behind a class-ahead of mine E46 m3 and 240sx, crap. 1:40.188. GET OUTTTA THE WAYYYY!

[Image: 311994_10100224603544569_896375693_n.jpg]
2nd Hot lap: I manage to work traffic, but this consumes time! 1:40.764.
3rd Lap: I have a clean lap ahead of me. Time to do this! 1st 3 corners get dispatched:

[Image: 308654_10100224604527599_1087884794_n.jpg]

Great time out of the first 3 corners, according to my datalogger. Push through China Beach, Madness. Line up for Thunder Valley, and PING!!
Ping? Ping? What is Ping? Now the car is shuddering and shaking. I pull over quickly and limp her into the pits. Only to discover this:
[Image: 316049_10100224605266119_1933529118_n.jpg]

3 Brand New GLS Top Studs had broken. Scary imagery if that had happened entering China Beach off the long straight.....
As I pull into the paddock to try to fix my issue, I park the car down near pits, and start walking back to the paddock. A guy goes, "Hey! You need wheel studs?" "Yes of course, I just had mine break on track". The man proceeds to say "Our studs simply don't break". I proceed to ask him what brand. "GLS Top Studs"..... DOT DOT DOT...Umm. I show him my studs, and explain: "Those are the GLS Top Studs".

Man is shocked and proceeds to inspect.

[Image: 297849_10100224605530589_1249590365_n.jpg]

[Image: 307779_10100224605625399_896405199_n.jpg]

After careful inspection, it turns out my spacers have a small .5mm lip that barely "rockers" the wheel under torque. Well great, sunuva bitch. The owner of GLS Top Studs is great and helps me out with 3 new wheel studs and nuts right there at the track. I proceed to install, unaware of the bad news that would strike me after fixing the car....

Who says pliers aren't great for everything? ahaah
[Image: 314874_10100224606698249_357217779_n.jpg]

The bad news. My competition had managed to pull out a 1:37.335. A whopping 1 second improvement, and .5 seconds ahead of me. Shit!!!!! Dry track and I had to break, leaving me behind. I was now solidy in 2nd place. Time to kick some ass in the 3rd session of Saturday.

The second bad news. It started raining, and when I say rain; I mean torrential downpour. A downpour that was not even worth going out in. I was complete, destroyed, and morale kicked for the day. Saturday was not a good omen for my first Nationals. I had one day to go. 2 sessions, make it or break it time.

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 05-23-2013

Part 3 of 3 Nationals 2011. (yeah yeeah I know. But I want a record of all of this, and I hope to still catch up)

One day to go, a breakage on the previous day, and rain in the morning. This is still TT, so one one lap over the weekend counts. I had high hopes coming into Saturday with a new record broken, only to have a failure of 3 studs, and news of the competition blowing by my lap time.

2 Sessions to go... The track was slippery because of the rain, combination of traffic, and offs led to the end of the first session. No joy, not even close to my previous times.

Here I was after 4 days of hard driving, in 2nd place at my first ever Nationals. I was ecstatic! 2nd place against the locals on a track I hadn't ever driven before, and with most sessions rained out or mechanical failures I was not bothered in the least.

But those who know me, know I rarely give up. If there is a chance, even a miniscule one; I will try for it all.

Before the last session, I was called yet again to Tech where they went over my car....again. This time I was handed a dyno slip. I found this hilarious, as at the weight I was at (3175lbs), I would have to make 261rwhp to get knocked out of TTC. Here I was knowing my car was only 229/230rwhp in TTC trim. Headed to the dyno and tried focusing on what I could do to improve my times in the last session. The skies had cleared and the track was drying. If only the rain could hold off....

[Image: 320204_10100224607671299_2017574156_n.jpg]

With the Championships dynos, you cannot see your own results. It is handed directly to the director. It is up to them to tell you your results. Well, I had limited time, so it went straight from the dyno to grid. On grid, the atmosphere was actually pretty relaxed. I was happy for 2nd, and of course was going to try; but no need to stress about it. We were all just joking around, and D'Amico thought the weather was finally right to get some shots of the car and I.

[Image: 313794_10100224608115409_182598527_n.jpg]

Now it was time for the last session. My AIM was freaking out, so I wouldnt have the opportunity to know how I did until the end of the session. I was ready and willing. As usual, I would attempt my last session as "all out or nothing". I was pushing hard.

I lined up for a good lap and hammered it. The first corner off the front straight is a very high-speed sweeping left. A lot of time can be lost/gained here, so I took a small risk, tapped the brakes and turned in a couple mph more than usual. Turn in was smooth, but unfortunately about 12-24" inches too far deep. Too late now to fix or I would have to give up that lap. With very short sessions, this was NOT an option to give up. So what do I do? My solution for everything...more throttle. Keep the arc and....closer and closer to that exit...closer and closer...and I wasnt going to make it. Instead of trying to dial in more that I knew wasnt there, I just tried to keep the arc going. It would be a fun 2-wheel off ride through the dirt and back onto the track. Kept the foot to the floor and kept going. Disappointing as I know I left time, but that's the way it goes. The session ended without another clear lap. I thought I was done for, and pulled into the pits.

The director calls out those who are DQed first... *random number* *random number *186*...Wait what?!?!? Why did I get DQed. I speak up. I was DQed for 4 off according to a corner worker. I look confused, and he asks if I wanted to formally protest. I thought for a second, and since I thought I hadnt done well, I just ask for shits and giggles what my time was. He states 1:36.9...... It was one of those moments where everyone in the circle knew, and a few gasps and *holy shits* come out. A possible record and National win, resting on a protest at the end of the week of nationals. I politely requested a protest...hahaah. I claimed I was only 2 wheels off. Unfortunately my camera wasnt running. I was about to lose this protest, but a fellow competitor piped up that he was behind me, and may have caught the video. The camera gets taken, and we all go over to Tech impound to get inspected and weighed.
After 45 minnutes of inspection, the directors had still not made up their mind. They had apparently gone over the video, and it had the incident.. But they still were unclear. It was put to a vote of the directors. It was like in one of those movies waiting for the guilty verdict in a room of the jury. 3 directors. 1st spoke up: 3 wheels off, claiming I still had one front left wheel on the gators. 2nd spoke up: 4 wheels off, it is unclear and going by judgement of corners workers.

The pressure, I was sweating, and they knew it. The final director definitely gave pause, I was going to pass out from the anticipation. He finally spurts out: 3 wheels off. I hollered and celebrated with fellow competitors. The final director, jumped in after only 20 seconds. He said: "Wait, you still have to pass your dyno sheet". I looked at him like, meh who cares? I could make 261rwhp. He replies: "You made 269rwhp".

The entire tech shed went quiet aside from one voice. My own "WHATTTT?!!?!". Then one of the other directors replied. "He is kidding, 230rwhp, congratulations!". I had won my first Nationals experience!!! I couldn't beleive my luck!

Prerequisite pictures of podium/champagne/trophy girls!

Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 10-21-2013

After 2011 NASA Nationals, I was riding pretty high on the win and decided to get my comp license in October 2011. The comp license entails the Friday before a NASA event of 1 informal race to start out the day, a bunch of side-by-side drills, leapfrogging drills, and then a final race at the end of the day including regular racers.

I passed the comp school, and prepared for my first weekend of racing.

[Image: 311083_10100251370553269_1395667860_n.jpg]

Saturday morning there was qualifying for both races. I had never done qualifying in a race group, only TT. Boy was I in for a surprise. Unlike TT where everyone is working together to get a good lap, in the racing qualifying you have to push and strategize to get a good lap. Had I know that, I might have done better than my 3rd place qualifying, live and learn.

Then came the race, the 1st place qualifying had to drop out, and so I was on the starting lineup for my first race ever. Nervous as all hell, I basically missed the start, and everybody came flying past. I dropped from 2nd to 4th by turn 1, but made my way back to 2nd after a 2 lap battle with Jim Khoury. Video of my first race from behind with Donnie Weymer as camera car (I am white #186 Rookie stickered car).
https://vimeo.com/30383748

Onto the 2nd race, basically the same story, except in a rookie mistake, I got behind some traffic and "fell in line" with traffic. This left a huge hole for Jim Khoury to end up diving in and getting by me on the top of rollercoaster on the last lap of the race.

I was happy though, my first two races went very well and came out unscathed.
