Re: Project: TL Type S - WRXtranceformed - 08-19-2010

With 93,000 miles the time has been approaching rapidly where I need to decide if I'm keeping this car and paying it off or trading it in for something newer / different. After 100k miles the value of these cars plummets pretty quickly, I just had to fight the county over the appraised value of the car and how much tax I'm supposed to pay on it. They valued it at $24k, I sent a witty letter explaining that if I could sell it for $24k I would be at the dealership right now trading it in. In reality in this condition, it's closer to $17.5k.

I think I have resigned to keeping it and running it into the ground. This is a big step for me because, as most of you know, I go through cars like I have girlfriends in high school / college.

My mod bug has still been itching at me and I was throwing around the idea of getting another project car...an older EVO, etc. Or a bike. I decided against the bike for a number of reasons, and I also decided that it would be silly to carry the expense of another car again when I'll rarely drive it. So, that means that once this car gets out of the 100k warranty I will be modding it to tide me over until it's paid off and the prices on used C6/Z06s has dropped considerably Smile

RV-6 Jpipe is the latest and greatest exhaust to come out of the Acura community. Because of the severely restricted stock jpipe, average gains for the TL-S are around 15whp and 12wtq. It eliminates the third cat as well. Not bad for $450.

Re: Project: TL Type S - Dave - 08-19-2010

whats it do for the sound? I like the sounds Linds' TL makes, but would like to turn the volume up a little bit. Not for $450, but interested still...

Dave Wrote:whats it do for the sound? I like the sounds Linds' TL makes, but would like to turn the volume up a little bit. Not for $450, but interested still...
Usually jpipes don't change the sound much but since this one removes the third cat (most don't, ppl usually replace it with a separate test pipe if they want) it apparently sounds much more aggressive. A really cheap way to give the TL more happy noise is to weld in a Magnaflow resonator. The resonator was like $40 plus labor. I like it a lot, it sounds much more aggressive and not ricey. You can also replace the mid muffler with a straight pipe while you're under there and that sounds good too. Maybe $200 max depending on the shop. It's really only when you do precat deletes that it starts to sound ricey and raspy like a modded G35.

I'm doing this more for the mid range and low end torque than the sound but thats an added benefit. I may hack out that mid muffler too, I just really don't want too much rasp or drone.

Re: Project: TL Type S - WRXtranceformed - 08-20-2010

I saw a black Z06 coming back from a meeting yesterday and it reaffirmed my decision to hold out a few years to get one Tongue

Re: Project: TL Type S - WRXtranceformed - 08-30-2010

Hey RJ, the precat deletes I'll eventually be doing apparently fit on the Ridgeline

Re: Project: TL Type S - .RJ - 08-30-2010

I'd buy those if there was a "make drive by wire not suck" kit

Here you go Tongue

Never tried it but supposedly they actually do something.

Hey man welcome to the club! Thanks for the compliments, it's a little dinged up because it's a daily driver but it's been one of the best cars I've ever owned

I'd definitely be willing to sell you my stock RSB as soon as I get around to putting on this Progress RSB that's been sitting in my garage for the past 4 months  I'll keep you posted!

Re: Project: TL Type S - caa337 - 09-12-2010

Love the TL

Minor update: I think I've got my mod route planned out as this thing is quickly approaching the 105k mile service already.

That Jpipe pictured above has been pretty popular because it removes the third cat (where most leave it) which is supposed to generate more power, but looking at the dyno charts between that one and the other high quality ones out there...there is basically no difference. I've tried to make that argument on the forum but I think my point usually goes ignored...removing one catalytic converter on an NA application isn't going to change the performance much at all...especially considering the TL-S comes with high flow cats from the factory.

I'll probably end up starting with the XLR8 J-pipe because it leaves the third cat. After much research and lots of complaints about raspiness, exhaust smell and bumper discoloration, I decided to forgo the catless setup especially on a car I drive so much. I'd like this one to be more civilized than Frankenstein was.

Ultimately the next step will be precat deletes, will be using RV6's V2 product:
These two together should give me about 20-25whp and a quite a bit more torque, which should keep me happy and significantly increase the fun factor of the car.

First though, I think I've talked myself into this:
With this to hardwire it and to have a remote panel for muting and black out night driving:
and this for a clean installation:

With as much time as I spend on the road and barely talking my way out of a ticket the other day, I'm well past due to run a good radar detector again. This will prep me for the new power to come and should hopefully tide me over until my car goes out of warranty and I can justify modding the engine / powertrain of the car. Anyone have any experience with this detector? I did a bunch of research on it and it seems to be within the top 3 detectors out there. I like the fact that:
a) it is 99.9% undetectable by RDDs, for when I travel back to VA
b) it has a silly range
c) it is GPS equipped with an update-able red light and speed camera trap database
d) "learns" speed trap locations
e) can integrate with Escort's laser jamming system seamlessly if I decide to upgrade it

Re: Project: TL Type S - WRXtranceformed - 09-14-2010

Well, I just pulled the trigger on the detector, hard wire smart cord and a visor clip. All for around $460 through Ebay / Amazon shopping which is less than what just the detector retails for. I'm not crazy about the idea of the visor clip, but I called Blendmount and they don't have one that fits my weird rear view mirror stalk. Apparently their web guy has the same car as me and he had to switch to a Gentex RVM to get the Blendmount compatibility.....yeah that's not going to happen.

The visor clip might work better anyway, it gives me the benefit of going suck-tion cup less and I can keep the detector hidden from prying eyes / cops in the tint strip.

Re: Project: TL Type S - ScottyB - 09-14-2010

i'll be keeping an eye on your report on it....i wouldn't mind adding some radar to mine down the line.

I hope so man. I am really hating my job lately, my hours change literally on a daily basis so it makes it really difficult to plan out trips to VA. With that said I may be up at JMU next weekend to DJ my brother's birthday party, but it's not set in stone yet.

The Passport 9500ix came today. Jeez I didn't realize how much of a machine this thing is. Several reports have been a little less generous in terms of it's RDD invisibility, but at worst it seems to be police-proof until about 30 yards which is more than enough considering its detection radius is literally miles long. This thing has an web-updateable database of every single known radar trap, speed camera and red light camera in the United States. You can also manually add traps you pass by so that you know to slow down for that area next time. I'll do a writeup on the install once the hardwire kit comes in...i'm thinking that I might hardwire it to the window lock switch so that I have a discreet way to turn it off and on when I cross the border

Re: Project: TL Type S - caa337 - 09-17-2010

How much did you pay for it? Sounds SO nice to have! And I hope to see the TL as well.

Re: Project: TL Type S - WRXtranceformed - 09-17-2010

For the detector, hardwire kit that includes a remote alert panel and a visor clip it was like $460 shipped. Normally the unit itself retails for $500 before shipping, so I felt I did pretty good. Escort makes a detector called the Redline that is the same price, has better range and is completely undetectable, but it does not have GPS, redlight/speed camera locator or the autolearn features. For as much driving as I do I felt these were really worthwhile features and worth the tradeoff. I had a cheap "undetectable" detector I bought off of Ebay that I used for a few years in VA before it finally died and it saved me from a lot of tickets...it didn't have a fraction of the range or features this thing has so I hope it pays for itself here over the next few years!

I'll let you guys know if I head up to JMU next weekend, maybe we can all grab a bite and catch up a little bit at Dave's.

Re: Project: TL Type S - caa337 - 09-17-2010

Alright cool. Yeah maybe ill eventually get one, would rock having one for where im from. Does it get confused in the city with all the different radars going off or is it smart and doesnt get confused?

Re: Project: TL Type S - WRXtranceformed - 09-17-2010

It will note if a radar source (like a automatic door at the grocery store) is false after the third time it goes off and automatically prevent that frequency at that location from alerting you. You can also manually enter it if you don't want to wait for 3 instances. Pretty smart!

Re: Project: TL Type S - Ken - 09-20-2010

So cool, I want. Mine does it's purpose although I forgot cops can detect it, hasn't been an issue yet... (knocks on wood)
