Beats spending $200 on powdercoating imo - WRXtranceformed - 10-03-2005 Evan, that's a really good idea actually, although I think the old caliper paint that I used was Duplicolor. The wheel wouldn't be under quite as much stress as the caliper I'd think though, so maybe I should give it a go. Scott, thanks man! I've been trying to fight the ricer urge inside of me, but I'm slowly losing the battle. Here are the JDM aeroguards on my friend's car, one of the owners of Subietuning. It's the flare on the front of the sideskirt and the one on the rear bumper: ![]() Here's the rain guard you're thinking of, also JDM: ![]() I kinda like this, it's unique... thought about debadging the Subaru and throwing these letters on:
- Nis01 - 10-03-2005 Theres a blue bugeye around campus that I've seen with I M P R E Z A on the back. Don't see it very often, thats for sure. - Feersty - 10-03-2005 Definitely like the I M P R E Z A idea. - Nis01 - 10-03-2005 You need a Spec-C roof vent... Get rid of that stupid sunroof... ![]() Actually I'm just jealous my roof doesn't open... - WRXtranceformed - 10-03-2005 OH man lol... I'd be FAR too scared to cut into my roof for that thing! Pretty cool idea if you track a lot I guess. I'd have to say I do like the sunroof more though ^_^ - Evan - 10-03-2005 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Evan, that's a really good idea actually, although I think the old caliper paint that I used was Duplicolor. Available in bronze and gunmetal (and silver but thats boring) - WRXtranceformed - 10-03-2005 Evan Wrote:WRXtranceformed Wrote:Evan, that's a really good idea actually, although I think the old caliper paint that I used was Duplicolor. Available in bronze and gunmetal (and silver but thats boring) Oooh that sounds money. How long did it take you to do it? Did you sand down the wheels a little first to help the paint stick? How many coats? etc. This sounds like a much cheaper/ better alternative to powder coating heh. - Evan - 10-03-2005 ive painted 3 sets of wheels. 2 sets were already old and had no finish or clearcoat, so i used wheel cleaner and naval jelly to get the crap and baked brake dust off. Paint has held great the other set (the gold 15s on my SM) I just sprayed straight on the clearcoat and it doesnt stay on at all. Chips off when you spray it with water (!) although some of that may be because the gold paint sux (its ceramic engine paint not wheel paint) moral of the story: yes strip the wheels first. advice: do 3 coats of color, and at least 2 coats of clearcoat takes an afternoon the first time. the most time consuming thing is masking off your tires, and waiting in between coats. You will probably go through 2 cans of color and 1 can of clearcoat - WRXtranceformed - 10-03-2005 Sounds good. Just sanding / stripping the wheels would probably take frickin forever heh. I'd kind of like to mask off the outer circular lip of the rim and do the rest in a flat or glossy black, or gunmetal. Kind of like a ghetto chrome lip, except the chrome would be the stock silver color. It probably wouldn't look the greatest, but it could if I was careful most likely. They'd be my winter wheels anyhow so they're going to be dirty / salty most of the time ^_^ - Mike - 10-03-2005 little painting how-to: http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1356908 - WRXtranceformed - 10-03-2005 Mike Wrote:little painting how-to: http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1356908:thumbup: - JustinG - 10-12-2005 I lil screen so i dont have to have my laptop sitting in my passengers lap anymore. Very clean! - Evan - 10-12-2005 Lee have you painted yours yet? - WRXtranceformed - 10-12-2005 Evan Wrote:Lee have you painted yours yet?Not yet, I bought the gunmetal and clearcoat paint from walmart as well as the aircraft stripper. I think I'm going to do it the weekend after this coming one, as I'm heading back to JMU this weekend since my gf is tied up with sorority committee meetings and such ^_^ Wanna come btw? Giving another buddy a ride down thurrr - WRXtranceformed - 10-18-2005 Pics to come soon! Got my JDM aeroguards in the mail and installed them two days ago... they look unbelievably good. The quality of the paint on them REALLY impressed me.... I'm beginning to think it's only USDM Subarus and Subaru parts that really get the shaft all around. - damnit458 - 10-19-2005 Evan Wrote:WRXtranceformed Wrote:Evan, that's a really good idea actually, although I think the old caliper paint that I used was Duplicolor. Available in bronze and gunmetal (and silver but thats boring) I realize this is kind of late, but I used duplicolor (the stuff meant for wheels) gunmetal and clear coat on my LS mesh when I got them (they were scratched up as hell). Its been about three months, and the wheels look great. The only signs peeling or anything of the like I see on the wheels is when I had to get new tires balanced/aligned Like evan I used three coats of paint and two of clear coat. Really shouldnt take to long to do. The only reason it took me more than a few hours was because the guy I bought the wheels from had used something to clean the tires, making it almost impossible to get anything to stick to them, covering them. Anyway, good luck, cant wait to see the new stuff. - WRXtranceformed - 10-22-2005 So it's rainy this weekend so I can't really paint my rims =/ Took a few pics of the much hyped aeroguards anyhow! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From behind they almost make it look like I have a widebody kit. Pretty easy install, took maybe 20minutes. You probably can't tell from these pics but I finally got my calipers repainted using a paint that's supposed to hold up much longer than the stuff I used before. Just did em in black this time. Just received in the mail a few days ago a turbo heatshield from SpeedMonkee, so gonna bolt that on when the weather clears up a little. |
