So I went down the internet rabbit hole last night.  The cars are expensive to maintain but not horrible.  Generally pretty reliable.  They eat tires and brakes and if you dont drive them hard the intake ports carbon up.  If you do drive them hard the intake ports carbon up a little slower.  They're big and heavy and the only reason to own one is for the engine with a set of pipes on it.  So naturally, now I want one.

I also want a Bangle butt BMW 550 RWD/6-speed, too.

Not sure where the hankering for the lead sled sedan has come from.

That can be addressed with a IM walnut-blasting and subsequent oil catch can install

Please make this happen, and when you swap out the exhaust leave off the cats.

I don't know either, but I like it. You should come drive the RS6...for comparison reasons.

And Adam, forget driving you, I'll buy your plane ticket up. You'd still be home in time for dinner.

Why isn't this thread closed? That looks like an absolute steal.

Considering this is likely in Lancaster NH (not Lancaster MA) a plane ticket to Boston is not much good. I saw an equally clean 540i w/ supercharger for a similar price come up for sale a few months back 20min from my house and passed on that too.

Stick to my rough criteria guys Wink I don’t wanna spend 10g on a toy. I don’t want to drive to New Hampshire. Trying to keep this purchase roughly money neutral with the sale of the Corolla.

Yeah seriously.

I still like the supercharged Jag idea and I dont know why.  Were they owned by Ford during that time?  I assume they have some weird parts bin assembly of stuff like Jake's range rover.

Says he doesn't want to drop $10k on a toy, but drags up the worst, super high mileage, V8 powered, european sports sedans he can find.

Anyone want to start a betting pool on when he hits $10k? I'd guess ~4 months after purchase, regardless of initial purchase price.

How do you figure? Standard mechanical parts are widely available used and seemingly inexpensive. I have no intentions of “refurbishing” jack or shit. Suspension / wheels / interior will stay as purchased. The one I am going to look at has had the timing chain guides replaced and recent cooling maintenance, supposedly with receipts.

Even if the motor blew I doubt I would be out over 2 g.

Hell, the things are so cheap I could just get a 1g parts car that was hit in the rear and probably come out ahead....

First of all, you're going to burn through all four window regulators in the first week and cut your hands to shreds trying to replace them. You probably think you don't need windows, but that assumes you can get them closed when the regulator fails, which you cannot, so if you want to keep the weather out of it, your ass is tearing them apart.

The ABS module is positioned above the passenger side exhaust header. This will fail. A new unit is thousands of dollars so you'll have to take it out of the car and send it out to be rebuilt for a few hundred dollars which will fix it until the heat from the headers melts it again.

You can't just "not replace" suspension items on these things when they start to go. They aren't like a camry that drives the same except a bit more comfortable when all the suspension is blown. When the bushings start to wear out, even slightly, it will shimmy and wander down the highway like crazy. When the rear bushings start to go you'll ruin your rear tires pretty quickly.

Oil does everything it can to no longer be inside an M62. The valve cover gaskets leak constantly, the rear main seals tend to blow out, and it uses an external oil filter housing that the lines/gaskets for enjoy leaking.

The PO may have dropped in a radiator and cooling hoses, i'd be more surprised if they replaced the valley pan, which are notorious for leaking coolant down the right rear side of the motor and it's a fucking bear to get in there and replace it. If it's made it this far it probably has an upgraded water pump, if not, you'll want to replace it ASAP because the OEM ones are known to grenade.

These aren't necessarily problems that you'll have to fix, but just general complains: The cupholders are a total joke, that's a common complaint for older BMWs but E39s take the cake. The pixels on the display under the gauges will eventually go out to the point that it's unreadable. The glovebox will either decide not to open one day, or just fall off entirely. They couldn't get a rack & pinion AND a V8 in these things, so the 540i got a reduction box, which sucks.

That's just what I can remember off the top of my head between owning one and working at the shop. And when these problems start to rear their heads, remember that you're doing all of this for a car that makes 282hp, weighs 3,800lbs, and realistically returns about 11mpg.

Since I'm pretty sure you were the one that pulled me aside during a Turducken and basically begged me not to buy a MKV because you had such a bad experience with a Rabbit, I'm telling you, as a friend, from personal experience, thinking you can go and buy a $5k, high mileage 540i, fart around in it for a while and sell it without incurring any major costs is shit-on-the-walls-crazy.

WTB: Fast 4 Door - ViPER1313 - 11-01-2017

Breath, I will be OK Smile

If the regulators go, they go and I will fix them. ABS pumps seem to be readily available for $100 to $150, and unless the car doesn’t brake properly, 5 cents of tape fixes that light. I watched a video of the valley pan job, it’s not as bad as half the shit I did on my SHO. Bushings are cheap and will be replaced if absolutely necessary.

My tolerance for BS goes up dramatically on older cars. I would never ever buy another 20g VW, but have no issue bombing around in a 20 year old beater.

I’m weird, just let it be.

Oh ok well if you watched a YouTube video about it don’t mind me.

I get it, it’s gonna take time and money to maintain. Your concern is duly noted.

Now has anyone found me a 750il not in New Hampshire, hopefully with some blow still on the dash?

WTB: Fast 4 Door - ViPER1313 - 11-01-2017

9 owners on the 540i.... everyone has taken a ride lol.

If you want to work on old cars, let's be friends.

Part of me still hopes this is an elaborate troll thread like Goodspeed's and you're gonna flash a shot of a flawless $50k NSX you bought or a 1000 hp GT500

Joey has provided a lot of helpful information for you.  I almost think the 200k V10 Audi is a better idea than an E39...

And if you are talking 750iL...the Audi is a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better idea.

The car is beautiful other than some rust. Drives great, no CEL, does have a camshaft position sensor code, tires need replacing. Interior is 8/10 or better, 0 dead pixels. Shifter has some play in it. Clutch feels fine, Trans has a bit of chatter while cold in 2nd and 3rd - normal?

Worth 3900 or 4g?
