Heard of the issue, always ran mechanical boost gauges and never heard them. Heard the same fixes you'll be attempting

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 08-21-2015

I'm not surprised you never noticed it on your Eclipse. I think, theoretically, if I had boosted the E36, with all the creaks and rattles and ambient noise, plus the exhaust, there's no way I'd be able to hear the gauge rattling. You could hear a mouse fart in the GTI with the "Soundaktor" in normal mode and the windows up, which is really the only time I can hear the buzz.

Anyway, guess I'll pop a little filter in it and report back.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - ScottyB - 08-23-2015

track day looked awesome! i get a kick out of your average HPDE weekend but brand specific stuff is great for filling your head with bad ideas and lots of contrast/compare nerdery. i'd love to drive Shenandoah someday, every time i watch a video its a little too addicting.

as for the gauge buzz - YES i had this in my A4 1.8T, using an Isspro mechanical in a very similar center vent mount. same deal...it buzzed at certain frequencies and boost levels, no matter if i was at stock boost or on my APR chip. i used this kit to eliminate it effectively:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.boostcontroller.com/Boost-Gauge-Tap-Fitting-Kit-Anti-Buzz-p/gba-003ab.htm">http://www.boostcontroller.com/Boost-Ga ... -003ab.htm</a><!-- m -->

you can also use either of these more complete kits:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.boostcontroller.com/Boost-Gauge-Installation-Kit-Anti-Buzz-p/gba-004ab.htm">http://www.boostcontroller.com/Boost-Ga ... -004ab.htm</a><!-- m -->
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Buzz/ES2576009/">http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Buzz/ES2576009/</a><!-- m -->

with the mechanicals its most definitely a resonance from the intake tract, just part of the airflow dynamics and completely normal if not a PITA to listen to. dampening that resonance is just a matter of using a filter or chamber to cancel it out.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 08-24-2015

I stopped by MachV on Friday afternoon to seek council and their recommendation was to get over it. A inline filter might throw off the pressure reading or at least slow it down, and stuffing cotton in there just duddnt feel right.

So the boost tap I used looks a lot like that ECS kit. I was confused about how the t-fitting would actually work because on the MK7s you don't cut into an existing boost line, you actually puncture a hole in an unused fitting on the manifold, attach the little section of hose they give you, stick the reducer "no-buzz" fitting in the other end of it, then run the boost line out of that, so there's no place for a t-fitting to go.

Prolly just gonna let it ride unless it gets really annoying. :dunno:

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - JustinG - 08-27-2015

Aftermarket catback = no more buzz

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 08-27-2015

Sure, that seems like a cost effective solution.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 09-30-2015

Just picked her up from the body shop and she's right as rain again. They replaced the entire bumper cover so there's zero trace of the damage, and in the 15 miles I've driven it so far, and only one clueless NOVA jackwagon has pulled into traffic without warning nearly sideswiping me, so the car should stay nice for a while...

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 11-06-2015

Took her in for her first service today. Oil change, tire rotation and radio software update so it stops occasionally changing itself to 87.7.

I'm not very good at sitting still in the waiting area so I went and found one of the true car-nerd salesman and sweet talked him into letting me take a '16 SE+Perf Pack+DCC for a joyride. While the "e-diff" does a remarkably good job at managing understeer in mine, the real diff is something else. Fly into the corner with your ass on fire, plant the throttle just as you're crossing the apex and it claws out of the corner like an AWD car. The differences between DCC settings are not very dramatic, comfort is ever so slightly softer than my car, but enough to notice when you go over a crappy road surface, and the sport setting feels like it nearly cancels out body roll.

If I had the money to spend when I bought my car, I 100% would not have regretted springing for the PP+DCC, but for the way I use my car 99% of the time I'm not kicking myself for skipping it either.

Also, when my car was done the tech came out and asked me if it was tuned. When I said no he goes, "No no, I don't care about it for the warranty or anything, I'm just curious." I managed to convince him I hadn't messed with it, but he swears it feels quicker than the other ones he's worked on. :dunno: Maybe mine was built when everyone in the factory was in a good mood, or maybe Jake and I made some magic happen by caning the shit out of it for 90 minutes on track when it had like 2800 miles on it.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - Beej - 11-06-2015

I believe the word is 'factory freak.'

I've either gotta get better at lying or better at identifying the car-nerd salesman. Got another recall or two coming up, as I understand it.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 04-04-2016

So its been almost exactly a year since I picked this thing up. I also crossed over 10,000 miles on my way down to the show Saturday morning so I guess it's old now, at least by VW standards.

I really haven't been horribly anal about this thing considering the fact it's my first new car. As much as I'd like to I just use the thing too hard to keep it looking showroom fresh. It carts the dog around at least once a week, and usually ends up hauling random crap around with the seats folded down on the weekends, so last weekend I gave it it's first annual detail.

Started with a regular wash, then went around it and hit a few spots with a clay bar, then fired up my buffer and just did a single pass with Meguiars compound and a light cut pad, followed by two coats of sealant. I also bought a touch up pen to fill in a few of the small chips its picked up, and to have one handy for future wounds.

Inside I vacuumed up a metric fuckton of golden retriever fur, wiped down all hard surfaces with a gentle degreaser solution. Then "treated" it with that Mother's VLR stuff, not sure if it's actually doing anything but it smells good. For the leather I used Sonax leather foam and a horsehair brush, which really helped loosen up the crusted-on dog slobber and snot. Would recommend.

I also have a new friend parking near me lately at work. I wonder if he wants to trade for a weekend.

And this was entirely too satisfying.

It's officially due for its second oil change and tire rotation. Gonna order a kit and knock it out this weekend.

VW's interior game is on point. I'm still not tired of looking at these dashboards/steering wheel/gauge clusters

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - Senor_Taylor - 04-04-2016

I rode in Duston's GTI on sunday. Those things are way nicer (and roomier) than I expected. Looks good, joey! Great seeing you on Saturday.

The MK5/MK6 cars feel tiny inside compared to this one too, at least when it comes to space around the driver.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 02-06-2017

Took this to an autocross for the first time yesterday and co-drove it with Jake.

It's really impressive how well balanced the chassis of this thing is, the liftoff oversteer it's capable of is hilarious. It stepped out pretty much every time on the downhill section of the track. I do really wish I had gotten one with the differential, I can't put ANY power down in 1st or 2nd unless I'm in a straight line. We started knocking it up into 3rd for parts of the course and picked up time because we weren't just lighting the inside tire on fire.

Surprisingly, I was only 1/2 second slower than Jake. :bootyshake: Granted, on a ~40-second course, but still.

We also bumped into Ryan Green (and another new MMer but I didn't catch your name, sorry) and got to see his pimpy Forester, always nice to put a face to the forum account.

EDIT: Oh and this was there. Many crises were had.

Yummmm. Looks like a newer z28 right next to it? I bet they both sounded glorious.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 02-06-2017

Once I saw the Giulia everything else went black. :dunno:

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - Jake - 02-06-2017

Yeah Jon, was a newish Z28 - the driver was buddies with the owner of the Alfa 4C that was also there and they were running fairly similar in times. Pretty interesting.

"Autocross" makes this sound like a parking lot event - was one of the Refrigerator Bowls, this time on Shenandoah at Summit Point. I was having a great time (gently) hopping curbs with my right foot buried. Each run saw me cross the finish line and think "damn, what a chassis." It was less frantic than my FoST and more capable than my friend Justin's Mini Cooper S. The back would get kind of waggy if you tried to start some shit, and it was easy to use that to your advantage and also not overdo it. Understeer was minimal if you picked a good line and the DSG is a peach.

Joey's car is on some Pirelli(?) all-seasons and has the open diff with "e-diff" software. I thought it was great for what it was, would be fun to pit it against the same car on RS-3's with the performance pack LSD.

Also got a ride in a drift car. Super fun and surprisingly smooth.

Great meeting you, Ryan-and-your-friend! Glad to see more MMers out there (Super Bowl was not an excuse, we were home with plenty of time Wink )

Woo! Now these guys don't need rav4s.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - SlimKlim - 02-06-2017

I also discovered it'll fit a mountain bike without needing a silly roof rack, admittedly a bit snugly.

Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD V2.0 - Jake - 02-07-2017

Results are up here and although Joey and I didn't get officially listed, I ran a 38.2 and he ran a 38.7. So, we did pretty well given the complete lack of prep (the tire pressures were set to "I dunno LOL") and the inherent disadvantage of his open diff - all other GTIs present had the LSD.

Fun stuff.
