Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - Mike - 01-13-2017 FYL. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 01-13-2017 100%. I'm having a shop replace tie rod ends next week. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - ScottyB - 01-13-2017 you can't just honeydick us with claims of moar turbah, i demand more info I WANT TO BELIEVE Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 01-15-2017 ScottyB Wrote:you can't just honeydick us with claims of moar turbah, i demand more info Would you believe that for a few weeks we have 3 cars and FOUR turbos? Boost rot, its real. ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR TURBOS, AH, HA HA....
Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-16-2017 Vacuum pump was, and has been leaking a long time. Making a damn mess. Now, mind you, its not the o-ring that seals the pump to the cylinder head, noooooooo.... the pump itself, which isnt serviceable. It made a damn mess all over the backside of the motor its been leaking for a while. Working on the backside of the motor is awful - in retrospect I should have pulled the motor a year ago and replaced everything with an o-ring or gasket, I'd have spent less time. I'm looking at maybe some swaybars, HPFP upgrade or bigger side mount intercoolers next. Front mounts look too stupid.
Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - JPolen01 - 06-16-2017 The 16 year old me is calling you a loser for not wanting the front mount. Present me agrees. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - WRXtranceformed - 06-16-2017 Front mount or go home! Where is your nod to your ricer roots?! Come on man Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-16-2017 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Front mount or go home! Where is your nod to your ricer roots?! Come on man My roots are busted ass hondas, come on. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-16-2017 I think I'd forgotten to post that I had my hi flow cat installed and the APR tune updated to match. Its been really nice - turbo spools up much faster and holds boost longer. It almost feels slower because you dont have the lag & turbo hit. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - SlimKlim - 06-17-2017 Where is the stock intercooler? Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-17-2017 Pair of side mounts in the front bumper Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - SlimKlim - 06-17-2017 Ah, that makes sense. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - ScottyB - 06-19-2017 big SMIC's are fine with that lil K04. can you squeeze more out of the tune with a better HPFP or is it just insurance? Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-19-2017 ScottyB Wrote:big SMIC's are fine with that lil K04. can you squeeze more out of the tune with a better HPFP or is it just insurance? Its still the disco potato K03. I need to keep this thing a little longer to pony up $3k for a K04 kit. I can get an upgraded HPFP ($650) and APR tune update (I think another $100) - it'll fatten up the midrange over what I have now, the stock HPFP already flows enough at the top end so not much gain there. The car heat soaks something awful in the summertime, it easily loses 20-30hp in summer heat soak vs. wintertime temps. Of course, with an HPFP upgrade and bigger intercoolers all the supporting work is done for the K04 upgrade.... this is what I'm looking at - http://sillyrabbitmotorsport.com/engine ... ntercooler - maybe with the front end in "service position" for the timing belt next year would be a good time to consolidate labor. I cant think of anything I'd like to replace this car with and its been pretty reliable, so I'm doubling down on keeping it for a few more years at this point. Its rare I ride a car down the depreciation curve, but I'm putting my tray table in its upright and locked position and putting on my seatbelt. With my wife working downtown and thinking about moving I really dont need 2 cars so I'd be happy to offload the 135 if we move and have no car payments. I also considered selling both the avant and 135 and buying a new golf alltrak, too but I've gotten strangely attached to this stupid avant. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - davej - 06-19-2017 I understand what you're saying. I loved my Avant, and the only reason it found a new home was because an S4 cropped up. Granted a B5 was a different world than a B7. .RJ Wrote:I cant think of anything I'd like to replace this car with and its been pretty reliable, so I'm doubling down on keeping it for a few more years at this point. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-19-2017 A B5/B6 S4 would be fun with the 2.7T, and there are times I regret not buying an S4 B7 with the V8, but that's a lot of motor hanging off the front axle and even worse MPG than I get now. And those timing chains. But those V8 noises... its actually not a great motor, I drove an S5 last year. Surprisingly no torque at all. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-19-2017 Just saw this, 100% relevant

I need to keep this thing a little longer to pony up $3k for a K04 kit. whoa no kidding? that's great power out of the 03 but man, you're right the heat soak from that little hairdryer of a turbo must be awful. i can remember popping the hood on my old A4 after a brisk but not fast drive at night and seeing the turbo glowing bright orange. its hard to get them efficient once you push them so hard and big coolers are the only way to deal with it without going to a different turbo altogether. before i sold mine i was actually trying to put together a water spray kit to hose down the intercooler to keep it from trying to go Chernobyl after a couple pulls in the summer. i'll never forget my short drive in a K04 1.8T A4...it was my exact car but with that turbo + supporting mods and it was just a complete bodyslam when it spooled. just a torque bomb from 2-4500 rpm. i always thought it would be the ultimate "commuter" turbo setup since you could jam from about 20-70mph so fast. i bet with that setup on yours you'd be sitting at an easy 320 lb-ft at the crank. Re: Project: B7 A4 Avant - .RJ - 06-19-2017 Yep, if I keep going down the rabbit hole thats where I'll end up... the downside is thats a big chunk of coin when I'm trying to do adult things like remodel my bathrooms and looking at moving, especially when I'm hurtling down the side of that depreciation curve. I figure the car is worth keeping until about 180-200k miles and then the whole thing gets a viking funeral.
