Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 10-18-2012

Do some research on PSA first...there is a whole bunch of arfcom hate, but I can't remember why.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-18-2012

Really? I have heard really good stuff about PSA from a couple of other people "in the know". Supposed to be pretty high quality stuff. Some of the beef I heard were some customer service issues...but they seemed to be few and far between.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-18-2012

I was recommended this one instead due to freefloat handguard and midlength system. Could add an Aimpoint to it:

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-20-2012

Anddd just pulled the trigger (literally) on this rifle. Has the exact optic I was looking at. They do this deal every now and then, it's going on until 12pm tomorrow (Saturday 20th). Didn't add any extras to it, heading to the gun show next weekend to see if I want to get different handguard, stock etc.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-20-2012

Finally took the Shield to the range for the first time. Shot smooth for the most part, trigger pull is a lot different than my XD. I was consistently pulling shots left about 2 inches off center until I adjusted. However, the extended mag dropped out of the gun after 2 shots very consistently. Not good. It also caused some stovepiping. At first I thought it was my fault, that I was hitting the mag release...but I let another guy at the range shoot it and he had the same issue. Apparently this is a known issue with the Shield .40s, but not with the 9mm. The mags in general don't seat or lock as well into the gun as my XD, and overall the gun just does not feel or look as well built...especially when you get it apart and look at the internals. I wish I had done some more research into it, because I would have probably ended up getting the XD-S (the same guy let me shoot his, as well as his modded XDM for competition. WOW on that one. I blew out the bullseye at 5 yards). I definitely don't regret the purchase, because it is a good gun and I will feel comfortable carrying it after S&W takes a look at the gun / mags and fixes the issue. I just feel with more comfortable with the XD at this point.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 10-20-2012

That's literally the first bad thing I've heard about the shield, although most people seem to forgo the .40 (cuz .40 is dumb)... I *have* heard some issues (but never experienced) with the extension "piece" causing issues. People who have issues with it (like the mag not seating because the rubber sleeve worked it's way up) tend to just discard the sleeve.

What about the internals leaves something to be desired, though?

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 10-21-2012

If you do decide to get rid of the Shield, you shouldn't have a hard time getting a buyer. Might consider a PPS after that, maybe?

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-22-2012

Yeah I went with the .40 just because it's something different. I already have a 9mm. There are a ton of posts on the S&W board about people having these problems, so it looks like i need to ship it back and let them fix / replace the mags and look at the gun.

I will have to take a picture of the internals once I get both apart again to show you what I am talking about. I don't think I would have an issue dumping it either, but I will hold onto it and see if S&W makes good on it and it feels good when I get it back and put some more rounds through it. It shot great with the standard mag, but I really like the extended one because my hand fits perfectly on it.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-25-2012

Recommended brand of 5.56 NATO for target shooting? Anything I should avoid? I haven't even looked to see if they sell it at Walmart.

Walmart should have plenty of .223. We usually buy the cheap stuff. I think the last we bought was American Eagle, but I know we've put lots of different stuff through it.

WRXtranceformed Wrote:Recommended brand of 5.56 NATO for target shooting? Anything I should avoid? I haven't even looked to see if they sell it at Walmart.

You've got 3 major categories of 5.56/.223:
1: Domestic Brass Case,
American Eagle
Winchester
Federal
Speer
Hornady
Etc

All those are good to go.

2: Foreign Brass Case
S&B
PMC
Prvi
Armscor

Only one I haven't tried is the last one, but I've got no reason to believe it's shit.

Finally, 3: Foreign Steel Case. (No US Manufacturers of steel case)
Wolf Performance
Tula
Herters
Hornady Training
Silver Bear

The only one of these categories you should concern yourself about is #3. Steel cased ammo is cheap. Much cheaper than brass, on average. It also isn't *bad*, but it's not as good as brass case. A number of reasons for this, metallurgy blahblahblah but basically the rule goes, before you buy a case of Steel, buy a box or 3, make sure it works in your gun, and be prepared for a higher number of malfs. (Nothing outrageous, though.) Some rifles simply don't like steel case, in which case, you can't run it. Other rifles eat-it-up-yum in which case the only thing Brass gets you is a lighter wallet (assuming you don't reload.) It is a little dirtier though, so be prepared for that. The only one to absolutely stay away from is the Wolf Military Classic with the *green* case color. It's a laquer, and it's bad for your gun so don't use it. The other point to note is that you should not mix and match steel and brass in the same shooting session, without cleaning your chamber. Going from brass to steel might be ok, but steel to brass is going to result in stuck cases.

For price comparison, if it's cheaper than what ammoman.com offers, it's a pretty good deal. I generally prefer to buy it by the case, especially on the rare times that cabella's has american eagle on sale with free shipping. That's a 500 round minimum buy for me every time right there. You're probably going to pay between $.36 and $.40/round for brass, $.27/round (or cheaper) for Steel.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-26-2012

You are the man. Yeah I was imagining with this type of ammo it would make a lot more sense to buy in bulk than it does with 9mm you can get for $11.00 a box.

9mm makes a lot of sense buying in bulk also. But you always need to be aware of what you're actually paying. When buying online, you always have to calculate in both potential tax and shipping charges. Sometimes it *is* cheaper to buy at walmart. If Dick's is having a sale, they always have great prices on 223. That's why Ammoman is so useful, his prices are "out the door". Free shipping, no tax, so it's a real easy measuring stick.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 10-26-2012

Speak of the Devil, Cabela's has free shipping on orders $99+, with code 2TURKEY, expires 11/6.

Makes american eagle $.37/round shipped...not bad.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-26-2012

Nice!!

PSA Rifle should be here in another week or so. Super stoked! Think I'm going to swap out the handguard with a black MOE so that i can add some goodies to it

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Ryan T - 10-26-2012

I'd like some advise on bullet grain. I purchase bulk 9mm ammo on the regular and have pretty much always been buying Federal 147gr. I've shot Federal for years and its reliable, accurate, and reasonably priced. What are the advantages/disadvantages to buying 115gr or 124gr vs the 147gr. I know that the 115gr has the most velocity but may not penetrate as well. 147gr has the weight to really penetrate but the velocity in most cases is sub 1000ft/sec. 124gr seems to meet in the middle. My question, which is best for stockpiling for when zombie times come? The difference in cost between the three is negligible to me, I'd just like to know the pros/cons of each, and what you all wound consider to be the best choice. Thanks.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 10-27-2012

Well, the answer to that question, like everything else is "It Depends."

Now. If you're ever going to get a can, the answer to this question is easy: 147gr. Subsonic = "Hollywood Quiet", and that's what you want out of a suppressor. If you aren't gonna get a can, well...the correct answer is to actually see what your gun likes.

Terminal performance for all these rounds is gonna be roughly the same for a modern JHP. A 147gr isn't really gonna make something any more dead than a 115gr. But your gun, owing to slide velocity and rifling twist and recoil management may "prefer" one to the other.

Here's what I'd do. Find the brand/type ammunition you prefer. (The correct answer here is Federal HST's or Winchester Ranger T-Series) Buy a box in all the bullet weights and loadings.

Then, you know, try 'em out. See which is best. Do some el pres drills, and time them with a smartphone timer app if you can. I wish there were an easier way, but...

Actually the easy way is "Everyone needs a can and 147gr reliably expands into a beautiful flower at subsonic velocities so buy that."

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 10-27-2012

This looks like a pretty good deal?

http://ammoman.com/p/299/xp193-pmc-55-g ... centerfire

I don't think I really need green tip or hollow point rounds for this gun. It won't be used for shooting through armor plates or for home defense..haha

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 10-27-2012

Yes, that's a pretty good deal.

Green tip has a steel core for better barrier penetration and ballistics...it is not a quote/unquote "armor piercing" round. But yeah, for plinkin', that's good stuff.
