Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-07-2011 Har Har ![]() Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-13-2011 Summit Hyperfest Prep: After Shenandoah I had a month to prep for Hyperfest, this involved fixing the coolant tank and getting my new wing on. But first a pic...of the wingless look: ![]() The next step was to prepare for the new wing! Justin Gallamore was in town and willing to help me out. We first laid down a bunch of strings to help center the wing...We then also took the time and created templates for where to drill into the trunk of the car. This took a little more time than just going at it. But the wing centers just like I wanted it to. Thank you again Justin! ![]() ![]() All mounted up and ridiculous looking (doesnt look as high in person)... ![]() ![]() After that it was time to start prepping the car for when it would get the cage. I had someone buy my entire radio setup including my head unit, all 8 speakers, amp, and harness. That way I could just pull everything out. So out comes the harness, surprisingly easy to do with the interior removed! Just unclick and run it through the car. Done! ![]() ![]() I also wanted to have ready for hyperfest was a coolshirt setup. After looking at options, I balked at the 3-400 dollar price of these. Its just a damn cooler with a pump! So I went online and found coolers for ice therapy systems. Same concept, its a big cooler made to hold ice water and pumps it through lines. It also has the advantage of being medically sealed, and adjustable flow rates. Ordered off of ebay for....30 bucks...yes! First step done. Then I went to OG Racing and bought a shirt. I considered buying a bladder and making my own shirt, but after the shirt, bladder, and effort, it would be only 20 bucks difference. So I bought the nice coolshirt shirt for $110 bucks. I took it home to see what adapters I would have to make fit. But then I noticed something, they look eerily similiar. I took my coolshirt lines, and plugged them into the ice therapy system....click. Sealed, water tight, and locked............ Holy shit, my luck is epic. I fill it with water to test, run it, and then go oh shit, I bet its not dry-break fittings for the ice therapy system. Oh well id spend 30 bucks. So I disconnect the lines over the sink and....wait...no they are dry-break. So wtf is coolshirt making people spend 3-400 bucks on shit? Damn! Plug and play, and only $140 bucks, not too bad. ![]() Lastly, I wanted a power-source away from the center cigarette lighter that I could have things hooked up to. That way they wouldnt be in the way, and I wanted multiple sources. Such as say running a traqmate, my coolshirt setup, and being able to charge my camera's battery. So I built a tray real quick, itll be cleaned up to be pretty when I get the time. The tray had to accomplish three things. 1. Be moveable, in case I need to put it somewhere else. 2. Absorb Vibration, in this case I used foam between tray and inverter. 3. Clear lines and have plenty of ventilation. Using that I made sure the bottom was open and grinded off certain parts to ensure fan had good clearance. Here is how it ended up: ![]() As for the cooling system. I ended up being a bad coolant hose, so replaced, and this time double-clamped as the aftermarket aluminum radiator is slightly smaller allowing slight movement of hose. Double clamping seems to have done the trick. Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - SlimKlim - 07-13-2011 I think you need a bigger wing brah. Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Kaan - 07-13-2011 if the wing gets any bigger he's going to need to take more than 3 points! Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-14-2011 Kaan Wrote:if the wing gets any bigger he's going to need to take more than 3 points! Hey I got another 5 inches I can go taller on the wing! I love this new wing, I hopefully can crack my own VIR record next weekend, I could feel the drag holding me back with the old wing, this new wing I feel like ive pulled off an anchor and have 15 extra horsepower. It was a dramatic difference. Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Kaan - 07-14-2011 are you sure its not just your butt dyno needing to be recalibrated after your wallet being emptied for this wing? Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-14-2011 No, its a significant reduction in drag. Those wheels are going to look smashing Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 09-22-2011 Ive been slacking! Ill be updated this more in the next few weeks. I decided to pare down my events a bit to get some rest, and work on more "sorting" of the car. It needs a lot of just small things to make it look better/perform easier. Now that its pretty well fast, the rest of the car needs attention. Upcoming Events: Sept 24/25th College Autoxs Oct 1st/2nd TrackDaze at Shenandoah Oct. 7 VIR Comp SChool Oct. 8/9th VIR GTS2 Races Maybe Oct. 29th CDC autox Nov. 5th/6th Summit Main Nov. 19th Autox with CDC Dec. 3rd/4th at Road Atlanta Parts list for getting the car ready for October VIR. - Electrical Kill Switch - Fire System -Nomex Socks - Nomex Shoes - Decals for GTS2, fire system, and electrical kill switch. - Restrictor Plates To do List for VIR October -Replace front wheel studs (again ugh after my shitty fitting spacer disaster) - Paint back of license plate orange to mark my rookie status in GTS2 -Put on decals for GTS2, fire system, and kill switch -Install fire system -Install electric kill switch - Install right-side window net A fairly small list compared to a lot of my previous lists. Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 09-22-2011 One thing I am adamant about too is goals. Ive accomplished a few this year, and have set new goals for me next year. Accomplished goals: 1st in TTC National Championships 1st in TTC Regional Championships if I show up to the last 2 events. Mid-Ohio Track Record Summit Track Record VIR Track Record Goals for the rest of the year: Dont hurt car in 1st two GTS2 races, my goal is to finish cleanly. Track Record for TTC at Road Atlanta, 1st there as well. I still have yet to come up with goals for 2012, but I think I need to establish this so I dont lose sight of what im aiming for. Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Dave - 09-23-2011 Uh, sounds like goals for 2012 would be: Continue pwning everything in TTC. Lime Rock Record. CMP Track Record. more VIR records (gotta collect them all!) Start beating up on TTB. Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Sully - 09-24-2011 I am only aware of one Race weekend left. What am I missing here :dunno: I thought there was no race groups at November Summit? Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 09-24-2011 Dave Wrote:Uh, sounds like goals for 2012 would be: lol. Where is Lime Rock? Never heard anything about that track? Wouldnt mind adding another track to my list. And Matt there are two races in a weekend, thats what I was referring to. Really cool place to visit, i'm sure you've seen it on Speed before! Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - Scott - 09-25-2011 D_Eclipse9916 Wrote:And Matt there are two races in a weekend, thats what I was referring to. At the last event at VIR there are actually 3 races. 2 points races on Saturday and the 1 hour "fun" race on Sunday Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 10-27-2011 Okay so this will be a LOOONGGG update, ill be splitting it into a few pages. But hopefully you can get through it. The update will include these events: SCCA College Autox Oct 1st/2nd TrackDaze at Shenandoah Oct. 7 VIR Comp SChool Oct. 8/9th VIR GTS2 Races Parts list for getting the car ready for October VIR. - Electrical Kill Switch - Fire System -Nomex Socks - Nomex Shoes - Decals for GTS2, fire system, and electrical kill switch. - Restrictor Plates To do List for VIR October -Replace front wheel studs (again ugh after my shitty fitting spacer disaster) - Paint back of license plate orange to mark my rookie status in GTS2 -Put on decals for GTS2, fire system, and kill switch -Install fire system -Install electric kill switch - Install right-side window net So I had plenty to install, not much time and events back to back. Lets get right to the pictures. I did the college autox with Madison Motorsports and had an absolute blast, the car is a bit rough for the Verona lot, but Kyle did catch a few good photos. I also had Justin Mathews, a fellow racer with NASA, try his hand at RWD. Setup notes: Bring rear bound down a ton to decrease skipping, soften front up lightly to counteract rear. Slightly higher starting hot pressures AIM: 34PSI Noticed significant body roll with high spring rates, I need increased roll resistance. Already at 850/900, but with A6s I may need more, or sway bars. Onto the pictures: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddd Justin being a bit eager with the throttle in a rwd. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: Dj's 1999 M3 Project - D_Eclipse9916 - 10-27-2011 Moving on to Oct 1st/2nd at Trackdaze Shenandoah. I always love trackdaze at Shenandoah because A) I love Shenandoah B)Trackdaze gives you 2 hours a day C)Free wet skidpad. However, this event was miserable for a couple reasons. A) It was raining on and off, and ended up raining most of the day. B) My student lost control on the back straight and totalled his car into the wall...with me in it. Coming up under the bridge straight my student got the point by on the right. 1st Mistake- Took the pointby and hit a large puddle of water, was just an inch off. This resulted in the car going over 100mph sideways. My student corrected properly, got the car set and smoothed out the wheel, the car started coming back and... 2nd Mistake- Car started coming back around and did not start letting the wheel out. This ended up in a counterslide without much room. We went track right and then hit the grass. Wet grass = not stopping. We slid FOREVER. In fact, my student asked me, what do I do? At that point there wasnt anything. "both feet in, hands off the wheel", "k"...............................................................finally hit the wall. The wet grass was just like pure ice, there wasnt anything that I could portray at that point to help him, and very little I could have done if I was driving. I dont think I could have saved it once it was in the grass. We hit on my side of the car flat against the wall. This was shocking, there was no coverage, no protection on the bare concrete wall. Ow. The photographer said we "bounced" off the wall. Both of us were fine, and I gave him a lending hand and trailered his car home for him. The result? Totalled car and me in pain. There wasnt too much pain that day, but over the next few days it got worse. Most of the pain started in the neck, but by Sunday night/monday morning. The pain migrated to my back and my shoulders. I have had back problems, 2 herniated discs from my rowing days, so I made sure to get checked out. Sweet so now im on drugs, and in pain, and I have to get all the safety equipment and my car ready within 5 days for Supercomp school.....ugh. Very few photos, as I didnt get all that much track time as the incident happened around lunch saturday. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
