With OTH targeting, if you're in a real live dogfight you've already screwed up plans A-D. AKA enough money to give every homeless person in America a $600,000 mansion (not that that would be a good idea). The point is that money could have been put toward so many better uses. Re: The Official "Jet Planes Are Effin' Boss" Thread - G.Irish - 07-16-2014 Yeah the amount of money spent on that albatross is hideous. We could fix a bunch of our aging infrastructure, invest in science projects, and probably have a lot of money left over to reduce national debt. It'd be one thing if at the end of all this the F-35 could actually do all that it was originally supposed to do. But at the moment it looks like it will be an underperformer in addition to being insanely over budget. By contrast, the Textron Scorpion is a light attack jet that was designed and constructed in 2 years and will only cost $20 million a piece. They just unveiled it at the Farnborough Air Show. It's more of an aircraft for nations with much small budgets and modest needs but at least it will actually do what it's supposed to do. My thought is that something that is much simpler and cheaper could at least fill the USMC role. Make it a jump jet if you must, but leave all the stealth and common airframe bullshit out and you might end up with something decent. Also, at $20 million per unit, when I'm an evil rich guy I could afford to outfit my own private airforce with these. Re: The Official "Jet Planes Are Effin' Boss" Thread - WRXtranceformed - 07-16-2014 If all of that money was invested in drones instead, we would have Skynet by now Re: The Official "Jet Planes Are Effin' Boss" Thread - G.Irish - 07-16-2014 WRXtranceformed Wrote:If all of that money was invested in drones instead, we would have Skynet by nowYeah!...wait a minute... The crazy thing about drones is that if you don't develop them, some other country will and will resolutely kick your ass. But the moment you make drones that can turn harder and go faster than manned aircraft and put some AI on them... Realistically though, the big threat is gonna be an aggressor hacking our super drones and fucking our shit up. I was actually having this discussion yesterday. I've come to the conclusion that this whole F35 bullshit (did you hear about the "second engine option" that got cut to "save money", BITCH CUT THE WHOLE THING) is some kind of black-ops "1000 dolla toilet seat" coverup for a fast attack/CAS/Bomb truck set of drones. It's the ultimate solution for our CAS problem. No more A-10, the F35 sucks balls at the task...something Textron Scorpion sized remote control would be perfect. Long loiter time, cheap running costs, lots of bombs to carry and no pilot to lose. I mean...ugh. If we have a fast, powerful, stealthy interceptor (which we do)...I feel like we need bomb trucks and CAS planes. Are we really gonna get in a air superiority war with a peer? One that DOESN'T end in a nuke exchange? :dunno: Re: The Official "Jet Planes Are Effin' Boss" Thread - CaptainHenreh - 08-29-2014 RIP, Unnamed Pilot of the 104th's F-15C that went down in the GW National Forest on Wednesday. Sir, I hope these Virginia hills give you the rest you've earned. Re: The Official "Jet Planes Are Effin' Boss" Thread - WRXtranceformed - 08-29-2014 Turns out he was pretty decorated, super sad! From what I've heard the valley/mountains mimic the terrain of some of the middle-east countries. Similar enough that it makes for good training ground. I hear them almost every time I play golf at Bryce. True courage to fly like that. While that's true, in this case, the pilot reported an emergency, and this was a "routine" transport flight to NOLA to get a radar upgrade. If I had to guess, I'd say he "rode it in" to reliably keep the bird away from civilization, then didn't have time to eject.
