The treadmill matches the rotation speed of the wheels you troglodytes! Since the plane is not propelled by the wheels, but instead by the thrust of the jet engines, the plane body moves forward relative to the earth, no matter the rotational speed of the wheels, which will always match exactly the speed of the treadmill!

Derek, I know the post I made on the last page has alot of words, but please try to read it.

Lol, I really dont think you know how airplanes work. If an airplane has no forward motion, it will not take off. Period. Airplanes don't fly in any other direction than forward. as in the nose always, always, always comes before the tail.

HAULN-SS Wrote:I edited my original post. Flying in a jet stream does not count. If we were in this theoretical treadmill, it would not be in the jet stream.

Don't get wrapped around the axle, just think about it and listen for a sec. Back to the riddle, the air is still. No wind. But the plane will take off just like normal assuming the tires don't explode or something.

how does an airplane generate forward motion Derek?

1 baby-step at a time...

HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

You're amazingly dumb.

We've established, many time over, why the plane moves forward. Now, YOU make a REAL case for why it won't... which you still haven't done yet. Or go cut yourself.

derek, look at it this way. you have a car attached to a strain gauge. when you start the treadmill, there will initially be some strain shown merely because of the friction between the tires and the treadmill and wheel bearings, etc. for this exercise though we are negating the force of friction though. if you pull on the strain gauge which is attached the car, it will show basically no change (aside from that countered by friction, which we negated) but the car will still move as you pull it forward. its vector will be whatever value you pull it (lets say a 1m long treadmill) but the tires will have rotated that distance and thensome because of the opposite direction of the treadmill. the amount of force exerted is still the same to cover that 1m distance. the change in the value of the vector is caused by you pulling on the strain gauge (ie: the jet thrusters or propellers or whatever kind of plane we're talking about) and is not dependent at all on the freely moving wheels of the car (or landing gear of the plane)

i tried to lay it out as basically as i could, but i'm not sure if its a better explanation as i've seen others write

Maeng, that was confusing as hell.

- Mike - 12-20-2007

this is hilarious.

- G.Irish - 12-20-2007

Come on Derek, are you in or out? The wager is, dinner at Fogo de Chao.

lol, yeah i really hope i confused derek more.

but in reality, the plane will not fly. it will burst into flames once the treadmill hits 88 mph, then the bear that kaan hit at VIR will come back from the dead, eat a widowmaker killing it again, but not before dropping a huge load which kaan's cold air intake will suck in and hydrolock his engine.

bah whatever, i'm done with this. I guess we'll see when Mythbusters comes out. I just looked it up, it looks like it airs in January sometime. (was supposed to air in december, but didnt for some reason?)

Don't back out fool! Are you in for the bet or not???

- Mike - 12-20-2007

mugen civic si.

- BLINGMW - 12-20-2007

I'm really surprised Mythbusters is going to do this, it's just so simple. But I guess it obviously generates a lot of confusion! For some reason, it's like the perfect riddle, whoever you tell it to will come up with some new way to not understand, they'll assume things you didn't say. Then they assume you're a complete retard when you tell them that it will fly.

If that video doesn't do it for you Derek, god help you. :bootyshake: Too bad he can't actually demonstrate it taking off thoguh. Looks like there's plenty of other videos about it....

*edit* wow, most of them are completely worthless :|

Awesome.

And yes, mythbusters is really doing this - http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythb ... sters.html

Thanks for the entertainment. This topic never fails.
