I'm not sure how I should react to the predictability of that exchange...

I used to be able to tell a huge difference on the first MC i had between oil changes. It was pretty high mileage (150k) and when it was close to oil change time, you could tell just by listening, didn't need to look at the speedo.

Given the context of discussion, a filter does not wear out.

aaaaaaaaand

play semantic games as much as you want, you told maeng that its better to change the filter at 1500 miles than the oil.

Wellllllll. Actually, I change my Mobil 1 synthetic 5W20 every 7500 miles. BUT THEN! I was about 1000 miles till my next change, and my low oil level indicator light had been off and on for say a month, when Confusedhock: my engine light came on and the traction control light started flashing. So, I finally decide to look under the hood, and the dipstick didn't register any oil at all. Sooo...I changed my oil, and several miles later all the lights went off. I've always used mobil 1 synthetic 5w20, but have never had this problem. I only have 60k miles on the car, so I can hardly believe it's an engine problem. I think I'll go for a different brand next time and see what happens.

good first move. i would also check your PCV valve, if it rattles when you take it out, it's OK. if not, it's about 5 bucks to replace. a faulty PCV will not vent the crankcase right and will force oil past your piston rings and burn up. that's a real thin oil too, not too hard to force that past crevices and into the combustion chamber.

so you've always used 5W20 and gone the same intervals before changing? if it's all the sudden like this, i doubt your engine is just giving up the ghost. something is causing it to consume oil or lose it somewhere.

don't be too alarmed either. some cars use a fair amount of oil in between changes. it's the consistency of use that's the factor.
