MAFS came today.

Waiting on the ECU and Flywheel to get here, then I'll place the Last Parts Order from Pelican.

- CaptainHenreh - 04-04-2006

Transmission came today. Flywheel came yesterday.

If I'm not mistaken, all I need now are mounting arms, mounts, ecu, brake booster and either a modified throttle cable or an E36 throttle cable.

And a clutch.

My first deal for an ECU fell through as the guy who was gonna sell it to me is in intensive care in Miami after wrecking his bike, breaking both his legs and his right arm. Naturally, he wasn't there to sign for the money order I sent him, so it got returned to me. Luckily, I found one out in Nova for only 5 dolla more, just have to get out there and get it. He might have the mounting arms for me too, the last peice of official "unobtanium", as the rest of the parts are "order it from the auto parts store."

Then it's time to tear into shit. I'm kind of stalling hoping that dad will finish the garage soon. I was trying to avoid doing the entire swap at Jason's.

Yes.

- CaptainHenreh - 04-30-2006

All seats, rear seatbelts, engine, transmission, harness and ECU are out, thank you Sean and Jason.

More work on cleaning carpet, etc, and prepping engine bay. Car just looks regular dirty now, not nasty dirty.

- Dave - 04-30-2006

why are you cleaning the carpet when you should be removing it?

- Jeff - 04-30-2006

Sorry I couldn't make it out Rex! Glad u got it done anywayz. Drop by CC tomorrow, I am there all day!

Dave Wrote:why are you cleaning the carpet when you should be removing it?

I'd like to keep the carpet, if I can. All you guys with the bare metal floor, pah. I might remove the headliner, though, cuz it's kind of mildew-ey...I'm gonna spray it with some bleachwater and see what happens.

It cleaned up pretty nice. The vinyl side panels got to be a nice black, and underneath the rear seats wasn't too godawful.

The cool stuff is what I found *in* the car. A partial list:
  • 2 Shotgun Shells
  • 2 bottle rockets
  • 1 firecracker
  • like, 11 razor blades. Guy had a fetish, I think. Might have been a cutter. I was tempted to get a tetanus shot after I cleaned this shit out.
  • An idle controller. Sean says it's worth something. We'll see.
  • 2 unsmoked Bailey menthols.
  • No more than 20 beer bottle caps, from no less than 5 different brands including molson, bud light, and miller light.
  • An as-yet-uncounted-but-half-a-cupful of extremely filthy change.
  • A P.O. Box key. (Along with 3 other unidentified keys)
  • A used window switch
  • And a phone number for an "Alicia".

Also worth noting is the removal of the AC, lines, condenser, dryer, and compressor. I might try to use the electric fan, though, because now there's *lots* of radiator room, since the AC condenser is gone.

We also, naturally, drained the coolant, and I was surprised at how good it looked. Very bright green, clear, and no mung at all either in the radiator or the block. Very impressive. The distributor cap, too, looked almost brand new. Very nice.

I also got a free 3/8" drive universal joint, that was stuck on a 12mm socket on the very last transmission bolt. Apparently, he had given up altogether and just let it go.

Plans for this afternoon include getting the engine on the ground (It's suspended inside the engine bay on the hoist) and pushing the car out to de-grease and powerwash the engine bay, and continue with the cleaning/sorting out of the interior.

Pictures forthcoming.

there are two little brackets and some associated hardware you can get from the dealer for cheap that were used on non-AC E30's to accomplish that-- works great!

Got a BMW PN#?

Also, I know I promised pictures, but I got this paper kicking my ass, so you'll have to wait.

But this afternoon I accomplished: (mostly dietary stuff)
  • Complete removal of engine and trans.
  • Took the trans off the engine
  • Observed the positively WASTED clutch (worst I've ever seen)
  • Removed the side panels, and the craptastic foam behind them. (WTF?)
  • Removed the rear seat belts and assemblies
  • Removed the factory amplifier, and power antenna (Sirius, homie)
  • Removed a positively ancient remote power lock system. (At least, that's what we think it was. What else would TX/RX circa 1990?)
  • More carpet scrubby-scrubby. (Julie did this. Not really me.)

Its looking all mean german boy racer now, except it doesn't have an engine. And yes, I took the obligatory "Standing-in-the-engine-bay" pictures. Don't worry.

- ScottyB - 04-30-2006

awesome Rex, sounds like a productive weekend fo sho!

- Chris - 05-01-2006

sweet Rex, glad to see its coming along!

here's all the componentry:

I only got #5, and #6, I just scrounged up some hardware/zip ties to attach them. I do recommend getting 11, 12, and 13 though, they work nicely and coming up with ghetto hardware for that proved to be a waste of time.

Pictures!

So this is how we started Saturday afternoon, around 3 o'clock:

A little less than 3 hours later, we were here:

Huzzah! We ended up around 10:30 with the engine bay all but gutted. We had to cut the slave cylinder line, because the nut is stripped and we didn't have a line wrench. C'est la vie.

So this is how we started sunday afternoon:

The E30 has a little captain in it...

We also found this attatched to the engine:
Hey, the guy said it needed a clutch...

But this is what we spent most of sunday doing:

We removed the seats, scrubbed the carpets, removed a whole pile of worthless crap from the trunk, and put the car cover back on in less than 3 hours on Sunday. I just didn't have much time to work on it. Maybe I'll work some today.
