If its causing lots of heat, that wheel bearing/hub will die a very ugly death. Losing a rear wheel in T10 @ Summit = totalled car.

Fix the caliper its not that expensive.

but i don't know if the caliper is the problem! i'm trying to figure that out without replacing it. it gets no hotter than the fronts so i don't think there is risk of wheel bearing failure.

To me, that sounds like a warped rotor.

I buy my rotors from Rockauto for a whopping 11 bucks. I also have this month's discount code for 5% off. If you do want to swap bearings, I bought a bearing removal/installer tool that you'd be welcome to use. You'll need air though.

my rear bearings are only a year old, i'm not worried about replacing them... the fronts? different story. they may very well have 190k on them... i'm an idiot.

i'll pick a rotor up at vatozone someday soon to see if that does the trick. BUT i thought rotors don't warp? Tongue

Rotors can warp, but the typical vibrations found are due to deposits.

if i post my plans up here, i'm more likely to stick to them. for tomorrow (holla 70 degree global warming!)

replace rear rotor
replace radiator hoses
MAYBE sand my si wheels and polish or paint them
MAYBE mask off the rear and spray some bedliner in it

won't that just wear off with more use? i'm just thinking there's a deposit because of infrequent use.

if its a different material deposit on his rotor, it'll probably get more pronounced with use because of the difference in coefficients of friction.

So I replaced that single rotor and went for a spin. Heard a god awful repeating sound (with revolution of wheel) so I figured I didn't get it. Get back home, check temps on rotors, and now the one that was getting no heat, which I didn't replace is getting really hot and the new one felt normal.

So I think I replaced the bad rotor, which is good, but that made the same issue more pronounced on the other side. I hate brakes.

Is it common practice to replace both rotors as opposed to just one?

heats were very even after replacing the other. i must have left the car sitting on the e-brake for an extended period (in the driveway) at some point, which left some nice spots for deposits to start forming... after driving, they formed, and grew, and grew.

moral of the story? don't let you car sit with the e-brake on for too long. i actually may have done it for months. oops!

:crosses fingers: hopefully that was the actual problem

hoses and coolant tomorrow along with cleaning interior. yay!

drove it to work today and sure enough, the same on and off dragging. will try greasing the sliders, but i'm about to just sell this pile.
