Speaking of margaritas...this is a solid recipe. (although, I'd switch out for a reposado but HEY THAT'S JUST ME YOU DO YOU, BOO!)

So what vodka for mixing? Do you sip vodka. Our bar is mostly smirnoff right now. What's a good middle of the road? Tito's? GF would be good too although from most spirits sites, they say the distillation process removes most gluten. What about whiskey? And rum? I guess I'll use one of the recommendations for tequila already mentioned.

My FIL likes Manhattans. What would be ok brands for the ingredients of one. He drinks like one a year so not even sure it's worth having the stuff around and we have some cheap stuff already anyways.

I don't sip vodka because I'm not Russian. I prefer Tito's for my vodka drinks. It's gluten free as well.

I don't sip vodka either, so we have only Tito's, which is a great vodka, or I keep Luksusowa, which is a Polish potato vodka that I think us pretty tasty.

Both naturally Gluten free, since ko wheat is used at all.

Technically any distilled spirit should not conrain gluten, because, you Know, distillation. But Tito's is pretty tadty so why risk it?

I also like Deep Eddy, same reasons...

MM Speakeasy (The Spirits Thread) - Sully - 07-26-2018

They had deep Eddy at our wedding. The owner of the venue likes it or something so like 4 of their flavors come with the package. We had to sub out the grapefruit so we could have tequila. I guess they were fine. I didn't drink liquor but I assume they went over ok with everyone who did.

The first time someone gave me Deep Eddy's I was under the impression that it was already a mixed drink, not just flavored vodka. I have no idea why I thought this, but I was drinking the grapefruit straight out of a solo cup. That was a rough night.

Titos and Luksusowa are both good.  But I recently tried Sobieski and I like that better than both of those for the price.  It mixes very well but it's a rye vodka so it's possible to have reactions from rye allergies with that.

Occasionally my girlfriend has allergic reactions to something we've been drinking and so far we think we've got it nailed down to rye alcohols.

RE: MM Speakeasy (The Spirits Thread) - .RJ - 07-26-2018

by rule, vodka is supposed to be odorless and tasteless.

and everyone makes a big fuss over it being "distilled 37 times over ancient lava rock" or some bullshit. The point is, as long as it doesnt come in a large plastic bottle its probably not any different from anything else. Tito's is fine.

There are some small craft distillers that dont distill it more than twice which leaves some of the flavor in it, and they're probably skirting some law or rule. Its worth seeking those out, IMO. All that said I dont like vodka and wont drink it much.

Cabell made me his Mantini last night. It was damn good. Not a fan of olives but the drink had a good balance. And yes Rex, he did shake it up. Fight him.

Everything about it is wrong. Shaken, vodka, whatever, make your drink.

There is Tito's and Luksusowa in the liquor cabinet. I like Tito's for mixing, but for a standalone vodka it's terrible. Worst Martini ever with it.

Old Forester is a good go to for whisky for Manhattans. Just buy the biggest one, it ain't going bad.

Then stop making martinis with vodka. Smile

There's an ANSI standard for "dry martinis", pay particular attention to the preferred mixing method:

Also note the only mention of vodka in this document is to preclude it's inclusion in the beverage.

Your opinion is incorrect. This is how you make the best martinis.

If you can figure out how to make gin not taste like Christmas tree pre-cum I'll happily put on my big boy pants to the age of 55+ and enjoy it.  Heart

You only like it if it has lemon and honey, amirite?

Try more gins. I used to think this too. Now I enjoy it. Not all of them taste like you dropped some pine needles into your drink. I think Hendricks is pretty mild on the juniper.

I'll accept blood orange, too,

RE: MM Speakeasy (The Spirits Thread) - Apoc - 07-26-2018

It's not a matter of trying more gin (or whatever) for some folks - they just don't like the flavor at all. I have yet to taste a gin that didn't make me want to do this... including Hendricks.
