what is it with Charlotte?  same kinda thing happened to our xterra when my wife was driving, she was alone going through 77 in town to a conference in '07.  piece of angle iron fell off a contractor's truck and speared a hole through the rocker and up into the door as it tumbled under the car.  thankfully some nice people at a gas station on the next exit helped her extract it because it was seriously lodged in there.

no reason not to let her drive wherever she wants, but a good refresher to always have an "out" and maybe throw a dashcam in there just in case so she doesn't have to worry about getting their info if something happens again.

Man that is crazy, I don't know to be honest. NC is like the MD of the south.

I am not trying to arbitrarily put a leash on my wife, she drives all over the place down here just fine. The long road trips solo when I am not there and can't get there quickly, especially with my travel schedule pulling me out of town a lot, just comes down to a safety issue. Shit happens I know that but there's not really a good reason to put her in those situations, especially with how rural a lot of the roads are between here and there. Fortunately this was *somewhat* close to home but sending her back and forth a couple times a year by herself (I go sometimes but my work schedule doesn't allow frequent visits) because her family doesn't want to be inconvenienced to come down and visit us is not going to be in the cards anymore.

Car is back and looks great, my buddy at the body shop told me we were super lucky. I had him save the piece of pipe fitting that impaled the grille...it was probably 20 pounds worth of metal and almost the length of my forearm. He said if it hit any higher it would have hit the airbag sensor dead on, they would have deployed at highway speed and that would have been bad. All things considered the damage was super minimal...undercarriage was fine, just needed an alignment a new bumper and active aero shutters and sensor. The trucking company owned up to it and accepted the entire repair bill which my insurance company said is really rare.

Did we ever get pictures of the damage or piece of metal?

I'll try to get another picture of the offending pipe fitting today, it's sitting in the bed of my truck right now.  Here are the pics from the accident scene:

Now post a picture of your wife's ankle monitor.

Oh, and look at you using your truck bed for something!

It's been a year since I updated this thread, the CX-5 has been rock solid, just ticked over 30,000 miles. Only two things to note:

1. They're now offering an Android Auto / Apple Car Play upgrade for 2017s! You have to buy it and it's like $430ish with tax but I'm definitely doing it at our next oil change. That will be a game changer.

2. Recently the car started to surge back and forth at 75% throttle between 30mph and 60mph. Like it would gain and lose power back and forth when you should be accelerating. I took it in and they had a new software reflash available for it. Holy CARP, this thing is now like a new vehicle. I swear it felt like the car picked up 15whp. My biggest gripe with this car was how sluggish it is in low-mid RPM, it just couldn't get out of its own way. It feels like the car has actually had some mod work done! Much more fun to drive now...even sport mode is much more responsive and pulls much harder. I'll take it!
