Eh, but the additional ones with the M3 are the pricey ones. Subframe issues don't happen usually with 328s and less. I agree though, the difference between a 330 and an M3 is rod bearings and valve adjustments or whatever and that seems to be it Afaik.

Nope, subframe issues are an all-inclusive thing. No diversity allowed, if it's an E46 it can have the issue and it honestly seems to be random selection as to which ones exhibit it worse.
I was having a metallic rattle at city speeds, which of course worried me because it meant the subframe was clearly falling out. Poked around and the battery is a bit under-sized for the car, so the tie down clamp doesn't work for it. The clamp is metal and was very loose, a quick snugging up fixed that.
Also have a "pop" when I creep over driveway aprons and the like. Not often. I think it's the swaybar end links and bushings in the rear. No biggie.
Looking underneath last night was good (hadn't done that yet) - for being a northern car, the body is in good shape. There is surface rust on various bits and bolts underneath, but nothing concerning. I'd like to look into the best way to handle it, as none of it is structural and could probably be dealt with using a wire wheel and some paint, unless there is a better way. Or maybe I'll just ignore it and make sure I buy new bolts with whatever parts I replace as they wear out.

The subframe isn't an issue for cars with no torque though. The subframe still is weak, but is much less of an issue.

199) 1999 323i (Sport Suspension) Rear Differential Mount Failing. Car in the shop now. Apparently no damage to sub frame. 129,000 miles in year 10. I am the original owner! I love the way this car drives but repairs like this make this an expensive ride. Changing out the liguid-filled rear trailing arm bushings at the same time. So, I will get a four-wheel alignment as an unexpected bonus with this "oil change."
