Re: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - RawrImAMonster - 06-14-2017

Finally got around to putting on new strut top hats. What a pain in the ass job that was. I don't think I've ever struggled with something car related more than that. Ultimately the bolt style spring compressors just do not work well with the shape of the strut and it's incredibly hard to get everything lined up right.

Long story short, that didn't fix anything. I guess I might throw some new end links on it since they are cheap and probably original. At least that's a super easy job.

I'm kind of thinking about selling this and getting something newer just to avoid dealing with typical older car problems. We'll see once I get this fixed, but I've been considering it a lot lately.

You know Joey and I are looking for a rally car :dunno:

Re: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - RawrImAMonster - 06-14-2017

Based on what he was saying, he's looking for something much cheaper than this. This one is pretty clean and unmodified so I should be able to get a good price for it if I do decide to sell it.

I haven't looked at prices recently, but I would expect to get around 7500-8000 out of it.

I was 100% joking. If you decide to fire sale this one day, let me know. (Not for rally trash car)

Re: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - RawrImAMonster - 06-29-2017

Well, I've replaced a couple more things and still have the suspension clunk, so I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to the struts themselves. Currently, I've replaced the top hat, sway bar end links, and I just put a new OE ball joint in last night. That was actually a surprisingly easy job.

Anyway, none of that made a difference. The factory ball joint seemed to be in fairly good shape once I got it out. At this point, I'm pretty sure it's just the strut itself making noise and I'm not going to worry about it since I'm selling it and the noise really isn't that bad anyway. My girlfriend has yet to hear it even with me pointing it out so it can't be that bad. I'll just warn whoever buys it that the struts are old as hell but it's otherwise sound mechanically.

Re: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - Goodspeed - 06-29-2017

Gimme a shout when it's time to sell, I miss the b00st and the manuels, like the rumble and the utility factor.

Re: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - RawrImAMonster - 06-29-2017

You and Rex may have to fight over it. He was asking about price on facebook.

Let me find the replacement first. I'm taking the time to find exactly what I want down to the color so it may be a couple months.

What are you getting?

I figured you were mostly joking, but I'll make sure to let everyone know when I'm ready to sell it.

2012 or 2013 GTI with around 50-60k most likely. It seems to fit the bill for newish, reasonably priced, somewhat fun, and utility. They don't seem to have too many problems other than going through water pumps, but that has been fixed with an updated part from what I've been reading. I test drove one and surprisingly they have more room with the back seats down than the subaru does.

You can find fully optioned ones in the mileage range I mentioned above for around 12k. I'm just waiting on the right color and options package to show up nearby.

1) sorry you had to replace so much
2) great you figured out what it was, and that it doesn't really hinder the mechanical ability of the car. never would have guessed a strut, but i guess at that mileage they're ready to come apart somehow
3) sorry you're selling it, but i have a feeling you'll get your money back on such a nicely kept car...its harder to find good example like that and people still really seek them out.

i hope it stays in MM...we need more wagons.

Re: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - V1GiLaNtE - 06-30-2017

Not a day goes by I don't miss my bugeye. *Le sigh* I should have never sold it.

Re: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - RawrImAMonster - 06-30-2017

Here's your chance at owning another one  This one has almost no rust at all other than some mild surface rust on the exhaust.

I am tempted to just replace the struts, lower it mildly, throw some STi wheels on and keep it, but I think I'm just ready to try something else. Car ADD and all.

Yea yea. My problem is I buy another car and then the one I have never get's finished. DDing a rumble wagon again sounds all romantic in my head, but I can't justify it on paper. Like I said, I should have sold my XJ instead of the WRX. It was minty and just a fun AF car to drive.

RE: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - RawrImAMonster - 04-06-2018

Well I finally just got around to replacing all of the struts and what a difference that was. All of the suspension clunks are gone, the car handles way better and rides smoother. I'm 95% sure those were the original shocks still on there are nearly 130k.

Unfortunately now I've got two cv boots that are just now starting to leak so I need to replace those and grease everything up before it ruins the axles, but then it should be ready to sell. I'm hoping I can do pretty well on this one since it's a clean 99% stock example which are next to impossible to find.

I'm not sure if you're still considering a gti, but get a 2013. The 2012s still have the timing chain tensioner issue (2010-2012) and the 2013s got the updated one. One less thing to worry about.

Haha, ok. I can't keep track of all the gtis. Very nice.

RE: Project: Rumble Wagon (05 WRX) - RawrImAMonster - 05-09-2018

Sold it this evening for what I expected to get out of it.  So ends my subaru chapter.  Time to order a tune for the GTI.
