My internship with AOL also rolled into a full-time position. Joey and I took the first few days to decompress at JMU with other friends, then moved up to our apartment in Fairfax together and spent the rest of the time getting unpacked, settled in, random runs to Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, etc. and so on. Was really nice to feel very settled before going in for Day 1 of work.Same boat. I didn't have enough money to move up here so I had to scramble around and borrow it. Almost sold my Miata to pay first rent. Worked at Cracker Barrel through May and moved up a week before I started the day my new job after my last day at Cracker Barrel. That first week was really nice to get settled in. I'm sure that working with the company will be different from their 10-week internship, but the connections I made and the responsibilities I had were something I actually looked forward to every day. I really enjoyed the consulting world, and because of that I want to dive back in. So, I accepted a full-time offer with Booz Allen, back in their Alexandria location at a starting salary higher than I even asked for! I did something similar with a couple buddies, borrowed a minivan and took 4 weeks to loop the country. We camped, stayed with family friends, etc., definitely recommend it. Whatever you decide to do, don't get too tied to a plan/schedule...it'll probably be the last time, at least for a while, where you can call a major audible with basically no consequences. The MM Network - JustinG - 10-02-2019 Bought a house, got married.... don’t do that. Buy a house that is....married is cool I guess . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 10-03-2019 ∆∆∆ Don't listen to that guy. I got married at 25 and even that was waaaaay too young. I had to do summer school to finish, so I didn't end classes until August. After that, we moved from Philly to Nova and then I got a retail job at a video game store... because I graduated right after the .com bubble burst and it was the only way I could make any money. Do something else. RE: The MM Network - Sijray21 - 10-03-2019 (10-03-2019, 12:50 AM)Apoc Wrote: I got a retail job at a video game store... i hope it was Babbage's.

Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 10-03-2019 It was Funcoland in that depressed indoor strip mall that is Fair City Mall. The manager was younger than me and banging an employee that was under 18. She called in sick one day, then spent all day hanging out at the mall, smoking cigarettes, and being touchy feely with the employee. Then when she "returned to work" the next day, she wrote me up because the store was too messy. It was no different than any other day. I was so glad to get my job at Allstate making about $50k (in today's money) and get the hell outta there. I've never taken any more than a month, by choice, between things... and that was when I moved to Seattle. I kinda regret doing that over and over again over 20 years. I should have gotten out of my box more. RE: The MM Network - .RJ - 10-03-2019 (10-02-2019, 11:38 AM)GTBrandon Wrote: What do you wish you had done? Move to california and buy a 911. RE: The MM Network - Sijray21 - 11-06-2019 Looks like our contract with my current company was lost to CACI. Who here works or has worked for CACI? Any idea how their corporate culture is and how the benefits/HR situation is? The MM Network - Senor_Taylor - 11-06-2019 I think Derecola? I've heard some really good things here and there about them.... but its all .gov contract stuff, so you could be in the same boat every time that comes up for bid. I'm guessing in your situation nothing would really change. RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 11-06-2019 I spent a few months at CACI when AMS was split up by them and CGI. They split our team of 20 analysts 75% and 25% across the two companies. I was in the 25%, so that really colored my opinion. That said, my impression was CACI was being run by ex-Pentagon generals and the culture reflected that. CGI seemed to slant more towards the business side. That was 15 years ago, so this post is probably useless. RE: The MM Network - .RJ - 11-06-2019 My company is going through the steps of getting unhitched from gov't conservatorship, which means going back to a more normal private, albeit heavily regulated, company. We have 7500 employees and 2500+ contractors (I think, guessing) and turned over $16B in profit last year.... and the layoffs, including being very top heavy with lots of years of service and in very good standing. Naturally they're happening and no one from the ivory tower has anything to say about it and that just fuels the rumor & fear machines with rumors of cutting 20% or 1k employees. One of the reasons I maneuvered into an employee position was the stability, benefits and the investment they make in the people - and seeing so many people with 10, 15 and 20+ year careers here. I guess that's all gone and we're not any different, which is really disappointing. I'm not sure if I hope I still have a job in January, or hope that I get a severance and dont have to work in a place that has been gutted like a fish because that's not any fun. Last week I turned down a move to a different group in the company, so I dont know if that will come back to bite me or not. Jake, I might need a product manager job
RE: The MM Network - Apoc - 11-06-2019 Getting laid off sucks ass, but I've rarely heard of a situation where someone isn't better off because of it. And Ivory tower did zippy to dispel rumors for months until finally they told us we'd all be out of a job. Severance was decent. But only was decent because I found a new job literally down the road with one of my customers, and was only unemployed for 1 total week. I'm happier now for sure than I ever was there, but I definitely didn't know that was going to be the case from the beginning. I've been on both sides of it - being laid off and making the cut, and they both suck. Although if they offered me 10-12 weeks pay as a parachute I'd pull that rip cord. RE: The MM Network - Deceus - 11-10-2019 I'd take getting laid off over this past year lol. Think the grand total between paying my old job back for that useless class and breaking my lease in Richmond I'm out ~$7500. Capital One sent me a $5,000 bill for my sign on bonus. They're probably never going to see that if it's only going to effect my chance at getting a job with them in the future. All to end up right back where I started with "senior" added to my title and a 4% raise (lol). Worked my ass off for a 3 month paycut, $12,000 in bills and -20 hours of vacation time accrual. I'm salty but I'm still going to do it again next year because I'm also crazy. Pretty sure I can clear the Amazon Frontend Engineer interview because it's more "build me a picture carousel" and less "design a back end for all of twitter in 30 minutes". They also recently made the really smart move to start paying their frontend people the same as the backend teams so that's cool and very much what I wanna be doing. Ideally I want to move into an L5 SDM spot since apparently those are almost exclusively internal hires. We'll see, wish me luck. Can't be worse than what went down this year. |
