CLOSE except for when technologies change and you're faced with more than a new video card upgrade. i'm currently at that point (i squeaked by on technologies [agp, ddr1, ata133] for my last upgrade) that my next machine will be $1k+
in the long run, a pc will cost more, but you can do more with it. since i get machines from work to do that "more" part, i don't put much value it. i have no reason for a new computer other than my old one is rebooting randomly when under stress, but i'm building a new one anyway.

I suppose you're right as I had to get a new motherboard the last time around. However, when you consider the functionality of computers it's more equal as you said.
I can't say I'd ever buy a computer just to game on, only that I also game on my computer I use for pretty much everything else in my life. When I factor in the sunk cost of doing those things on my machine anyway, the computer comes out ahead and is the reason why I haven't bought a console since Xbox.
There are some games I just couldn't imagine playing on a PC (God of War) and others I couldn't imagine playing on a console (C&C). I think there are arguments for both though and saying one is outright better than the other is kinda silly.

a full computer upgrade shouldnt really cost you $1k unless you are using uber-high end components. I did a full upgrade about 8 months ago and all I reused was a case.
Cost around $600 and that was when ram was 5x the price it is now.
although I dont do much computer gaming (Been meanign to get into racing for a while but it just doesnt hold my attention)

I have only gotten about 6 hours of sleep in the past two days thanks to Halo 3. Tonight probably won't be much different.
I must say, playing it on in my boy's theater room on his 110" HD projector really spoiled me, and makes me wish I had a similar room since I'm scrapping my projector idea. Maybe I'll turn one of my spare bedrooms into a movie room someday..

I should have my theatre room done by the end of the October. I've been in the house for 17 months and am just now getting motivated partly because of Halo 3.

seriously, on my status report each week i note "things on my mind." it contains "madden 08 (08/14), bioshock (08/21), eternal sonata (09/17), halo 3 (09/25), project gotham racing 4 (10/02), call of duty 4 (10/05), beautiful katamari (10/16), assasin's creed (11/??)" in addition to some real work material

I won't have to catch up on a million, just 1. I'm not nearly as game obsessed as you are. I've been playing Peggle on my desktop for Christ sake, do you really think I'm going to be buying a shit ton of games? They just don't matter to me as much as they used to. Call it getting old or getting yuppified but it is what it is. Tivo + Netflix gives me plenty to do.

I've gotten to a point in my life where I've realized I just don't need as much crap as I used to. I stopped collecting DVDs and video games cause for the most part they just sit around. Back in the day, I really wanted to buy GoW2 but I haven't even played it and I'm still breathing.
