HAULN-SS Wrote:What's wrong with gear whine? i always liked hearing it

nothing "wrong" unless it's possible to quiet it down. i'm not used to it though, and was curious who has dealt with it and if they've had any luck with particular products that might help the noise subside.

- Beej - 09-11-2007

Yeah, my driveline has always been kinda loud, but I never thought much of it.

- HAULN-SS - 09-11-2007

ah. my SS has gear whine pretty loud, especially low gear around a parking lot..I never tried to "fix" it.

- WRXtranceformed - 09-11-2007

I've noticed it too on both MT Subaru's I've owned Scotty, nothing to be worried about! You'll get used to it.

- ScottyB - 09-11-2007

sweet. thanks fellas.

- WRXtranceformed - 09-11-2007

Hey Scott, if you ever start doing weight reduction for the track, a cool little tip to start:

Take apart your glove box door. In it there is a double-bar welded thing that serves no apparent purpose other than to make your glove box drop open faster and harder. It's not much weight, but it's a free mod and is surprisingly heavy for what it is! Makes you wonder what other useless shit is found in those cars that could be removed

- ScottyB - 09-11-2007

ha that's awesome. i wonder how much it cost subaru on each car to put in a stupid peice of metal to make a door open faster.

- ScottyB - 09-11-2007

oh yeah, forgot to mention....

friday i was going home after work and got cut the F off. i mean, i wasn't cut, i was displaced. i was in the left lane of my direction on a busy 4 lane road coming down the last mile to my apartment and some dumb bitch in an odyssey just did a massive jump from the right lane almost into my lap when some old guy pulled out in front of her. the front of my car was at her door, but she had no idea.

i couldn't possibly brake fast enough, so i had to jump into the left lane of oncoming traffic. thankfully there weren't any dividers and somehow i guess peripherally i could tell the lane was open because i had no time to really think about it. it's the first time i've ever truly laid on the horn, i mean for 10 seconds straight. her reaction? speed off as fast as possible. i wanted to catch up and just scream at her but my left turn was coming up and she was already had a couple cars between me and her. it would take forever to catch up. and what then? me yelling, her just zoning out, i'm sure.

after this, i think i might be going over the deep end but the experience terrified me, and i'm really, really, genuinely pissed off. so, i'm buying the most outrageous horn i can afford. if someone does this to me again, i want all 6 of their senses to be completely raped by the loudest freaking noise that can eminate from a car. i'm aiming for 230% effectiveness, at least.

any serious suggestions? price below $200, please.

there's lots 'o cheap air horns at JCWhitney!

I've seen fog horns before too, I always thought that'd be a trip coming from a little car

Duuuude, Hella Supertones!! I've found them for like 45 bucks and they're 118db!!! They look badass too, here they are on my old STi:

You can see them in the grill, the two pink circles.

only 45? nice! i haven't looked real hard at pricing yet, that's hard to argue with

- Evan - 09-11-2007

i have some supertones that have been waiting to be installed for a while. *sigh*

- BLINGMW - 09-11-2007

shoot... those JCWhitneys are 134dB! And cheaper. Of course, being JCWhitney, they could just as easily not work at all.

that's actually the first one i looked at! i'd probably paint the trumpets black, though.

I think it's a fabulous idea. After the bump I got on the supra, I decided my next street car will have something on it to make my presence known. I personally would like something load enough that the person wets themselves as they yank back into their lane after I blast them. Perhaps the JCWhitney used in conjunction with the Supertones...

F250 + Supertones + Yosemite Sam mudflaps = king of the road

- WRXtranceformed - 09-11-2007

4 Supertones in conjunction = Warp 10!!

- Nis01 - 09-11-2007

Just open up the exhaust and allow that nice boxer rumble to make your presence known. I wouldn't mind some Hellas but I don't think I have ever once used the horn on the car...

I would have to imagine the Supertones had a tough time competing with the exhaust on your old car Lee.

- Dave - 09-11-2007

exhaust protects your ass, horns are for deafening idiots beside and in front of you.
