yeah... but then he'd have to drive the subie to ATL.... hmm, I'm sure I can find an e30 down there that needs a good home.

Mike Wrote:my problem with maximas is they handle like such boats. great motor, though...

thing is, they aren't very expensive to modify. an aftermarket suspension can really shape things up for them. stock though, i totally agree.

cars don't really rust down here....come and get 'em 8)

- ScottyB - 04-08-2007

ha, i just realized i totally contradicted myself in my requirements...

i said i didn't want any cars with a solid rear end and guess what, the maxima has one and i think the mkIII GTI has one too. doh!

i couldn't afford the insurance and fuel on a big honking muscle car anyway, let alone fit stuff in it for practicality.

- HAULN-SS - 04-09-2007

maybe you should buy an 86 - 88 monte carlo. Full frame, v8, lots of room, unlimited cheap mods yo!

- Jeff - 04-09-2007

Oh yeah...great idea. With scotty's luck it would do just like that Donk at the drag strip. Thats like sayin "Hey Scotty! You can get a really nice Daytona Shelby with T-tops and no mods for like $3000!!!! OMG DO IT!!!"

ha. sorry Derek i just don't have the baller style to pimp a monte. maybe some day when i move up to camo overalls and big johnson sleeveless t-shirts  j/k man

and actually, if it was my luck, when i turned the car on snakes would shoot out of the vents and bite me in the face.

- Dave - 04-09-2007

OMG, snakes on a car!

I posted some pict0rs of cars you should consider in the appearance thread

- ScottyB - 04-09-2007

OK, i've basically been researching the hell out of stuff all day, every day since last week. it's getting tough to find what i really want now....i'm also finding my budget is probably unrealistic. might have to raise it a few grand.

i've started to really warm up to EP civic Si's. they are really exactly what i need when i think about it. since they are "unpopular" sport compacts the pricing is just right for the milage. if i ever want to the sky is the limit for mods. i know it will be a solid car too, no nickel dime BS. too bad they look like poo, but i can deal with that. but the theft issue....i'm so torn on that. my area is good and i don't think these cars are big targets, but you never know...argh.

OK....if anyone has some advice, please chime in on these questions. i have gone over all kinds of reading and these are issues i face with my other choices, and i'm not sure what to think. sorry this is kinda long, i'm just taking stuff off the top of my head here.

- SVT focus....terrible gearbox problems are all that's holding me back on these. Feersty, have you noticed anything with yours? how has your dealer treated you on warranty stuff?

- E36 non-M....the subframe thing still haunts me. whatever car i buy i will thrash on the auto-x course. is it worth the risk to run without reinforcements on the rear subframe and rear shock towers? should i just try to stretch a loan out for an M3, which is more robust? RJ, Hunter, Chan, BJ? also, still looking hard at the 318Ti. is the step back in rear suspension technology worth the advantage in a more rugged design and less weight?

- MSP.....perfect out of the box, but totally maxed out speed-wise. i like to tinker but i'd be locked in with the stock engine/tranny. 170 horses is fun but for how long?

dub GTI.....i think they're very cool but i will want the VR6. i hear they like their timing chains, and it's a bitch to do. Blair, how do you feel about your GTI, does it hold up well? what is the usual cost for chain/guide replacements?

Mazda Protege5.....great looks, space, handling. but 130 horses, i dunno. that's not alot, but then again it could be entertaining in a little wagon like that. i'm not sure how to take this one.

WRX....it'd have to be a wagon and they are kind of elusive around here, or expensive at the very least. they are bulletproof though, can't deny that. with some wheels and suspension it'd be a blast i bet.

again, sorry for the ramble. these are pretty much what i'm after. they all sound fun but it's hard to get a feel for what day to day life would be like.

I think you're worrying too much... the rear shock mounts are an issue and easily fixed. The subframe issues are very few and far between, and lots of heresay. Dont lose sleep over it. You could have reinforcement plates welded in (I believe turner sells them) if you wanted to have some piece of mind.

ScottyB Wrote:WRX....it'd have to be a wagon

Why would it have to be a wagon? Most of the rest of your cars listed are 3 or 4 door. And they respond really well to some cheap mods Smile You know you'd miss t3h b00st!

I think these are the two best choices, but thats just my $.02

- HAULN-SS - 04-09-2007

I'm pretty sure the last thing I worry about when I buy a car is how often it might get stolen.

Actually - G-body's are ridiculously easy to steal...half the time when the ignition lock gets some age on it, you can start them with a screwdriver (not mine though, luckily)

- .RJ - 04-09-2007

HAULN-SS Wrote:I'm pretty sure the last thing I worry about when I buy a car is how often it might get stolen.

Because you drive cars no one wants to steal.

Its a legitimate concern when living in a more urban area - sure, you have insurance but you still have to pay higher premiums on car with high theft rates, and a deductable on it if anything ever happens.

- HAULN-SS - 04-09-2007

Pfft - well, my subaru has frame-less windows..it'd be easy as hell to at least break into - if not steal.

i'm not looking for wagons exclusively, it's just that if there is a wagon or hatch variant of the model i like i'll go for that if i can. practicality and all that lame-o stuff. Big Grin

i'm trying not to get out of shape over the E36 subframe thing but after seeing some of those pictures....eek. i guess as long as i look the car over well....

i didn't know legacy's were high on the hit list.

buy a honda and park it unattended in a high traffic area of Nova and see how that goes  Jay?

if I was a theif - easy targets would be high on the hit list....

Honestly I don't think max horsepower is a good way to rate how fun a car is. My ZX2 had 130 hp, and really my focus should handle better, but the ZX2 was much more fun to drive.

It sounds kind of ghey, but I think I would take the 130hp ZX2 over a lot of cars that have 170-200 hp.
