Why Sony is going to hell - Printable Version +- Madison Motorsports (https://forum.mmsports.org) +-- Forum: Madison Motorsports (https://forum.mmsports.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=3) +--- Forum: Lounge (https://forum.mmsports.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=6) +--- Thread: Why Sony is going to hell (/showthread.php?tid=4634) |
- bassmangrammy - 08-24-2006 Just a different perspective, but when a new system comes out (since eBay), the market price for a new, unopened unit exceeds the MSRP. We studied the example of the XBOX360 in econ201 last semester. I think SONY realizes the lost profit there, but is missing the fact that they will turn off people because of the intial price... maybe. It's yet to be seen. - Evan - 08-24-2006 bassmangrammy Wrote:JI think SONY realizes the lost profit there, but is missing the fact that they will turn off people because of the intial price... maybe. It's yet to be seen.there is no lost profit. Sony sells to retailers/resellers at a fixed price. The retailers/resellers are who profit from the gouging. - Evan - 09-05-2006 something has been bugging me about the ps3 logo and I just figured out what it is. its the exact same font/spacing/slant/etc as the spiderman logo yay for originality - CaptainHenreh - 09-05-2006 I wonder what font it is? I bet it's the Sony font! - Evan - 09-05-2006 CaptainHenreh Wrote:I wonder what font it is? I bet it's the Sony font!:?: not even close - CaptainHenreh - 09-05-2006 Sony Font Nuevo? I mean, Sony Pictures did Spiderman, so I'm sure some bean counter went "Hey, the Spiderman font looks cool, let's use it for the PS3!" That's all I meant. Maybe I should have expounded further, and not gotten an " :?: " - Evan - 09-05-2006 gotcha yeah I dont doubt that there was some sharing going on there. It could have even been one of the sony execs said "i really like the spiderman title, lets use that!" we get that all the time with our clients "we want our software to look/feel like X software" just seems strange to me to re-use something so blatant when in this day and age marketing and originality is everything. This is why execs should stick to the business side of things and let the marketing/graphics people do what they do best - karmapolice - 09-05-2006 Seriously who buys this stuff when it comes out. It usually plumits in value in a few months. I might get the PS3 if I'm bathing in money but I'll probably end up getting the 360 when and if the price drops when the PS3 comes out. - BLINGMW - 09-05-2006 wow good eye Evan, that's funnny! - G.Irish - 11-16-2006 Well the PS3 and Wii releases are upon us, how has everyone's feelings changed (or not changed)? At the moment I'm not very compelled to buy any of the 3 systems just yet. I won't buy a Xbox360 until Forza 2 comes out (Spring 07) but I might buy a Wii sooner or later, it just depends on the games. There are maybe 2 that I'd like to buy that will be available at launch but it hasn't set my loins alight. I'm still cold on PS3 and will remain cold until there is a significant price drop, and even then it depends on games. GT5 won't be here until late 2007 or 2008 and I'm not interested in GTHD. So for me my likelihood of purchasing the 3 game systems in the next 6 months on a scale of 1-10 are: Xbox360: 7 Wii: 6.5 PS3: 1 What I kind of wonder is how all the PS3 scalping is going to work out. A lot of people are talking about selling them on ebay but how many people actually want to buy the system to own it? I guess with the limited supply it won't be too much of a problem. I've seen at least one story of people paying homeless dudes to stand in line. One has to wonder how many people are willing to pay 2 and 3 times retail for one of these things. - Mike - 11-16-2006 360: Still not sold on it. I've heard enough hardware horror stories to stay away until there is a game I must absolutely have or MS release an acknowledgment that they have fixed something. Wii: I want to try it first. Of the 3, the most likely one that I'll pick up on a random trip to Best Buy. I know Nintendo still has it in them, and I'm really excited since they're sort of taking gaming a new direction with this. PS3: I don't think Blu Ray will catch on, but having played one yesterday... Damn. More impressive than a 360, but at $600? Forget it. I'm not even thinking about it... So I may pick up a Wii before '06 closes out, and I may pick up a 360 in early '07... PS3? Impressive, but I can't justify the cost. - G.Irish - 11-16-2006 Yeah the 360 hardware problems concern me a bit too. I don't think I'll be able to resist when Forza 2 drops though (assuming it doesn't suck). I might actually break down and start playing Halo as well. Supposedly a Halo 3 multiplayer beta will be available in the spring. - WRXtranceformed - 11-16-2006 I <3 my 360 =) There are so many good games out right now and that are coming out in the next several months to tide me over until they correct the inevitable bugs in the PS3. $600 is retarded, and I heard some stores are selling the top end PS3 for $999!!! - BLINGMW - 11-16-2006 I guess the most (only) interesting one to me is the Wii. At least it does something different. But I donn't plan on buying any of them even within a year. Heck, we still have a LOT of DDR's for PS2 that we don't have! And I'm pretty convinced that driving sims are better on the PC, and that's most of what I play. So no thanks. FWIW I played gears of war with 3x 360's linked up, and sure, it was fun... but better than Halo? Or any of the other war and FP shooters made in the last 5 years? Not really. There's a point for me when the graphics are "good enough" and it's all about gameplay. - G.Irish - 11-16-2006 I'm starting to lean towards PC racing sims too. I just have to get around to getting a steering wheel. With a lot of the games the graphics are not selling me so much anymore. The place where the extra graphical power will be welcome though is that now you can have a lot more characters on screen. How badass would it be to do Le Mans with 50-60 cars on track or lead your squad of 20 marines against like 50 Covenant brutes. That kind of stuff should be a lot of fun. - Evan - 11-16-2006 Id rather upgrade my PC than buy one of those boxes. I think most likely Id be inclined to buy a PS3 mainly for Metal Gear. The 360 is finally hitting its stride with Gears of War but im not into action shooters enough to buy it for that Wii looks interesting....but thats where it ends. ultimately I dont play video games enough anymore to justify the purchase. And if I do play my favorite genres are sim racing and a story based game like metal gear or resident evil. Since the sim racers are all better on PC, that doesnt leave a lot of motivation to buy a $500 system for 1 game - REED - 11-16-2006 G.Irish Wrote:What I kind of wonder is how all the PS3 scalping is going to work out. A lot of people are talking about selling them on ebay but how many people actually want to buy the system to own it? I guess with the limited supply it won't be too much of a problem. There was an article today about Ebay putting restrictions on selling PS3. Something like - you have to have a rating of 98-100 and each Ebay account is only allowed to sell one PS3. As far as the 3 consoles: I havent played PS3 yet, but I cant really see how the graphics or games could be some uber better than 360 to warrant that much of a price gap. The Wii looks cool, Id give it a shot, but I doubt I would buy one. It seems like something that would be alot of fun for one of my friends to buy, so i can play with it whenever I get the urge. IF, and thats a big if, I were to buy one, right now it would be the 360. but my $40 xbox is doing just fine. As long as they keep releasing new games Ill be happy. Besides my TV isnt good enough for me to bother with decent graphics anyway. - BLINGMW - 11-16-2006 REED Wrote:Besides my TV isnt good enough for me to bother with decent graphics anyway. That's one of my issues too. Very few people have a TV that can even take advantage of the Blue-Ray crap and the super duper extra graphics. Hooray it's the cheapest Blue-Ray player you can buy. But hell, even if you do have a great TV, DVD can drive an excellent picture on an excellent TV, with excellent sound..... Just because Blue-ray exsists, does that mean everybody needs it? I just don't see how anything but a niche market could be interested at this point. As long as it took people to finally start buying HDTVs in any noticeable quantity, I don't see a demand for this for at least 5 years. - G.Irish - 11-16-2006 Yeah I see Blu Ray and HD DVD the same way I see DVD-Audio and SACD. Answers to a question no one's really asking. The only additonal feature is better picture quality but DVD's already have great quality. The only movies that would be worth having in high def would be sci fi for me. Who cares if you can get Talladega Nights in Blu Ray? - Evan - 11-16-2006 have you seen a 1080p video feed? No way Im going to drop the coin on a 1080p setup, but holy shit it looks amazing. Even 1080i is leaps and bounds over anything standard def. |
