Watching it now. I hope it is competitive.

Henry is dirrrrrrrrty!! One of my favorite players in all of soccer.

Both my father and I both think Italy will purposely tie the Czech team just to get back at us  . Not that it matters though, I dont see us getting more than a tie vs Ghana. We simply cannot finish anything. Two games, and no goals scored by our own team, including 20 min of 11 vs 10.

They were doing great for the first 25 min of the game vs Italy, but as soon as we went a man up they stopped pressuring the midfield, and to be totally honest, reverted to the american team we saw the first game. Ghana was absolutely man-handling the czech defense in the last 25 min of the game when they went a man up. I counted atleast 5 or so opportunities to score, not to mention they almost always had posession (with exceptinon of the last 2-3 min when the czech team had a few good chances). Thats what we should have been able to do.

So are we all ok with talking about the game going on right now between the US and Ghana or should I make a thread with a spoiler title?

- Feersty - 06-22-2006

I am sure it is fine, but there may be some haters that Tivo'd it.

- Beej - 06-22-2006

Since I'm the original 'hater', doesn't matter to me. I watched the second half.

That's just speaking for myself though. If you REALLY need to discuss it, I'd start another thread. Not like it hurts anything.

Great matches today.

Spoiler below!

All European teams left.

- Evan - 07-01-2006

que? France is in Europe

England is the king of chokes. Just while I was watching the game they completely fucked up 2 golden scoring opps. I did think the redcard was BS though

- WRXtranceformed - 07-02-2006

Rooney definitely deserved that red card, he stomped on that dude's dick!
They choked for sure, but to be fair, the Portuguese goalie Ricardo was getting DIRTY! He was really sick, he stopped a bunch of those PKs.

- Evan - 07-02-2006

it just looked incidental to me, they were fighting over the ball

- Feersty - 07-04-2006

what the hell Deutschland? I hope France beats Portugal.

- WRXtranceformed - 07-04-2006

Germany fucking gave up. That team looked so flat-footed for the entire second half. They deserved to lose that game, and I knew it was only a matter of time before they got pwnt.

As far as Rooney's crotch kick goes, that was definitely not incidental. Those guys know exactly what the fuck they're doing, especially that guy who is notorious for losing his temper. I wouldn't go as far as to say that he blew it for his team, but they definitely struggled after he was carded.

Flatfooted in the second half? Germany had Italy on its heels the first 20 minutes of the half. If anything Italy only really started to put some pressure on near the end of the second half/in the first and second OT periods. IIRC the Italian GK had to make a few (one that I can remember ATM anyway) good saves to keep the game scoreless.

Look at it this way:
Italy had 11 shots that were actually on goal, Germany had 6
Italy had TWELVE corner kicks, Germany had 4
Italy possessed the ball 16% more of the game than Germany (not domination by any means, but it does show who was in control)
Here's the big one: Lehmann had 10 saves to Buffon's 3.

Dude had 3 saves the whole game! Germany was just not putting enough worthwhile pressure on the Italian keeper, especially towards the end of the 2nd half and into the overtimes. Only 1 of those saves was actually a difficult one.

Germany definitely had its chances, but Italy wanted it more and you could tell.

Well i agree Germany did squander most of its chances, but I dont know if it really came down to them wanting it more. All but the last few of those corners ended up in Lehman's hands, harmless crosses that he easily grabbed. Posession wise the Germans had there ups and downs (IIRC the first 20 min of the second half were spent almost exclusively on the Italian side of the field). But yeah, in the end they really didnt put enough shots on net.

Im still pissed im gonna miss the france portugal game. I hate working during all of this. Go portugal!

Zidane is like a thousand years old. No way he can match up to Ronaldo.

Have you watched him at all? C. Ronaldo is flashy and has quick feet, but Zidane plays with WAY more confidence and control.

Brazil's Ronaldo is very old, but he is still feared and still plays well. There's a lot to be said for experience in soccer (case in point, the huge mistake that Rooney made for England).
