Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - Senor_Taylor - 03-01-2018

I'm still confused. Why are Non M parts in the equation?

Edit: Below assumption is wrong.... Wait nvm, I was right?

DJ thought the his previous wrecked e46 (325i that was converted to M3 motor) race car had 325i front arms since the rears were 325i. In reality his fronts were actually from an M3.

So he was swapping over his previous racekor parts and they didn't fit as expected because he bought stuff for 325i front end.

And then this is what doesn't make sense???

Oh, didn't know there was parts swapping going on. Neat. Thanks.

Edit: Ignore this, previous statement was correct

Actually am wrong. Is confusing.

He assumed his current M3 had 325i fronts since there rears were 325i spindles - he noticed this when he did the rear wheel bearings.

Big Grin   Correct.
Bought stuff for a 325i because rear end was 325i (and world challenge specs were 325i) but somebody in the past had moved to M3 front spindles while leaving 325i rear end parts in.

And YES, it doesnt make sense, the AKG arms that are MEANT for Non-M fit M3 spindles, but dont fit Non-M.  Hence a lot of WTF while working Tuesday night.  Got it all resolved but still need to contact AKG about it.

Race Car V4.0 - Ground up - Senor_Taylor - 03-01-2018

So why are the old parts being swapped on? Is there some benefit to using non M parts?

Yeah, so did mine.

Unfortunately I had to play this parts swaparoo game because there is no continuity in the original build, and things have been replaced since World Challenge Specs.  Also helped complicate things that AKG sent the wrong tapered sphericals that were supposed to be 325i, but were actually made for M3.  *sigh*

Great thing is, since I am building the car from the ground up, I am going through all this and am able to identify and replace things that don't make sense and log for future maintenance intervals.

Moar fun - brake lines are for a MK20 stock system which are completely different than a MK60 system and don't adapt to my brakes for this car since they were made for a custom application using AN-3.

EVEN MOAR FUN - Axles for M3s and Non-Ms are different right?  Well there are also late model/early model, automatic, manual and different gearing changes axles too.  WTF was in this thing? no idea but slowly working through it using realoem since no part numbers remain...

Non-M rear end stuff is lighter.....and cost.

If I decided to switch to M3 running gear JUST For the rear.  Easy right?
-New DiffsOnline Diff since M3 is completely different. $6400 edit: Oh only $5,900 for the same specs I currently have :rolls eyes:
-New Rear Brakes since mounting arms are different $2600
-New Driveshaft as spacing is different, also paired with the stronger 5 speed trans, so gotta source that right combo...
-New subframe solid bushings at $300
-Custom Rear Sway bar wouldn't fit so would have to figure out/weld/fabricate new mounts

Front end is simple and I got lucky, I didn't WANT to switch to M3 because the 330i caliper mounting offset is different so I would have to get a new $3k+ brake kit and throw away the $1500-2k worth of brake pads I have already stockpiled.

Luckily it already had M3 front spindles matched with the brakes so I am all good up front with all M3 stuff.

If figuring out those suspension/spindle issues was half as difficult as reading that paragraph, I’m sure it was a rough night.

But fucking hell man, that chassis shot is awesome. First car to ever have M pillars instead of A.

I think I will keep it simple for the next update..which is now.

I am also replacing the braking system.  The later M3s have MK60 ABS, which I had in standalone mode on the previous car.  I wanted a stock pedal setup so I bought a MK60 master to pair with the abs pump, of course didn't fit with MK20 Booster.  So had to reach out to a friend and go grab one.

Brake setup and suspension all ready to go!  Already did a quick bleed on the brakes and the pedal is already rock solid.  The AKG bushings in the pedal setup were worth every penny.

While everything was out, we modified the steering column over to center it with the seat and Deren was able to fabricate a new mount for the chassis side of the seat bracket to push me over.
Had to run home once or twice for parts and specialty tools for the twin disc clutch install/gas tank install.  Deren was able to build new mounting tabs for the transmission, so hopefully itll stay in a bit better this time  [emoji1]

To finish up the weekend we dropped in the assembled motor and trans after v-banding the headers to make it easier to remove.

Wow this thing is starting to come together fast!

The white is hawt.

Just out of curiosity - how does an arrangement like this work with you helping Deren wrench on the car while its at the shop (and out of working hours?). Maybe that's an offline discussion, but curious how that dynamic works...

Sponsorship.  Seems to be working too, lots of racers switching over from another well known shop to MachV.

I tried but I guess they only work on subarus and race cars  Big Grin

He did stuff for my E30. (Shrugging emoji)

I think everyone here advertises for them better than any formal effort. I like Deren so I sold him on a friend of mine to drive up and get work done at Mach V. I'll certainly go to him with my future stuff.

This is looking great, DJ! You're 5 Minutes from out place so let us know so we can come oogle and you guys work.

Deren installed my clutch and stuff last spring, maybe I get a pass because it's the same model he has tons of experience on with all the race cars.

Lol he works on anything for the most part. I think DavidL was referring to working in the shop alongside him guys Wink
