Yeah, it's about the only job you can do with out having to pull the engine.

RE: 2003 RS6: Not an Innie. - davej - 04-25-2018

I had been ignoring a slow leak in a tire for a bit now because I couldn't see anything obvious but finally took it to the shop to find a nail through the inside tread and cutting into the sidewall. Womp womp. I had a chance to throw on the winter wheels last night until I figure out if I want to buy 4 new tires or figure something else out and I'm loving the 'fat 5' style on the c5 body.

Had to pause and admire the ridiculous calipers again. 1/2" ratchet for scale since we were out of bananas

I also took a moment to finally swap in the giac chipped TCU I've had in the trunk for months. It sits in the passanger floor pan so remove a couple of trim pieces and you can pull up the carpet, but that was stiff as hell. A second set of hand would have been easier, but it was doable. It's made a noticeable difference in shift times and will hold higher gears longer as you're coasting/driving around town. I'm a fan of anything that might reduce stress on the transmission. I've got an email into giac to see if I can get a full document of all the changes with their chip as it's not on their site anymore. 034's chip also increases the rev limiter so I'm curious if giac does as well.

Well, crap.

I thought I'd at least make it a year before the front clip had to come off. That little bastard lives under the intake manifold.

Everything looks pretty decent outside of the nest of whatever. The car had sat for long periods with the PO, so who knows what critters took up resident. At least there didn't seem to be any chewed wires that I could see.

There's a one way valve for coolant right in the front of the crud that looks to have leaked at some point. Coolant was all dried so maybe it was a hose clamp or something. Either way I'm going to roll the dice since part is like $250, because of course it is.

Did notice the maf seals were a bit loose around those intake pipes so I'll order fresh ones and see if cleans up some if the oddities.

Whoa that is in the engine bay of your RS6? I couldn't sleep knowing that was in there

Yeah, I was pretty sketched out by it. It's all cleaned up now, and if there was any consolation to be had, anything that might have been in there got set to well done when the car started up. I'm actually surprised it didn't start a small fire in there.

Let this be a lesson to drive your cars kids, no good comes from sitting around.

Is it because it's disgusting? I bet that's it.

That's gotta be it

RE: Old Man Sedan: 2003 RS6 - davej - 06-02-2018

Finally drove the car again Friday as Rex and I got shunned from maap coffee, probably because it was too early for Cole to deal with us. I don't know if the car was running much better than before, or if 3 weeks in a double-digit hp car reset my tolerance for boost, but man did it pull well. For today, all is well with the world.

Hopefully this thread will just hibernate for the next couple of years with out anything requiring mention breaking.

RE: Old Man Sedan: 2003 RS6 - davej - 09-26-2018

The stars aligned the other week and I tagged along for run up 33 with the kids. This might have been the first sustained flogging I'd given the car in a year (as sad as that is) but oh man was it fun! Perfect day and although the car was still on the skinny snow tires, it was a champ. Audi really engineered the physics out of the car and it didn't feel nearly its 2 ton weight being thrown around turns; not e30 light by any sense, but effortless to whip. The brakes would probably stop a runaway 18 wheeler; they were just phenomenal and didn't show a sign of fade.

I did notice the oil temp climbed way up, usually it sits about 175 but it was holding steady around 250, 350 is in the red on the gauge, so it may just be normal spirited temps that I rarely get to. There is a mod you can do to the under tray to pull more air/keep temps lower, but I doubt I'll ever get that serious about it.

I unintentionally hogged the spot behind the cameraman on the way up, but Jackson got a bunch of great photos out of Brandon's car. (Which sounds really, really good... for a hair dresser's ride) There was one guy visiting a friend that needed a ride so he hopped in with me, but I felt bad for his friends having to breath in all the catless fumes in their Miata the whole way up.

This might be my favorite photo Jackson got capturing a $hitEating grin, and my poor passenger's Oh$hit look.

It really needs to be driven more like this.

+1 for this not being a "shit's broke" update

250 is fine... is that oil temp sensor in the pan or pickup or what? Must not be in the head, 175 as a "normal" seems kinda low.

RE: Old Man Sedan: 2003 RS6 - .RJ - 09-26-2018

If yore oil is only getting up to 175 on the regular, you're overcooled and not burning off condensation out of the oil. Run that bitch harder.

True. What if I just take out like 3 of the 8 quarts, it'd get up to temp faster then, yeah?

RE: Old Man Sedan: 2003 RS6 - BLINGMW - 09-26-2018

Bypass the oil cooler while you're at it. I've never had a car with no damn oil cooler so I don't see why your car is so fancy that it needs one.  Tongue

RE: Old Man Sedan: 2003 RS6 - ScottyB - 09-26-2018

modern synth oils can handle the occasional trip past 250, up into 260-270 territory without much consequence although its not ideal. most engines run normally in the 210-225 range.

glad it got to stretch its legs, i bet those big C-body audis can surprise someone.

RE: Old Man Sedan: 2003 RS6 - davej - 01-25-2019

Nothing much to report here except I've had my fun and it's time to move on.
Went down the BaT road with it, but their reserve was less than I was comfortable with, so starting to hit the forum/CL/FB circuit if you have desire to share it out.
