Stopped at Blue Toad for lunch on the way back from NC and agree with the "meh". We did a flight to sample their 8 current flavors and we (me, wife and parental units) were largely unimpressed. Had a Stella Cidre the night before and it was much better. The BT was kind of bland, I mean they had the tartness but the flavor just wasn't there. They just seemed...flat, like they weren't *that* different from one another.

Went to Brooklyn Brewery on Saturday - tried their Naranjito which was a citrus pale ale. Wasn't designated as a session but certainly drank like one (4.5%) delicious and easy drinking. Also tried their Defender IPA (which was the official beer of Comic Con?) and that was also really good. Lots of flavors that my palate can't really describe just yet but wasn't overwhelming.

I've had only one Brooklyn Brewery beer and it was their limited Bel Air Sour. It was great. Easy to drink and great balance of sweetness and sour.

So figured in the beer thread I would talk about my kegerator, and I just upgraded a couple of things, so it is fresh in my mind.

Picked it up last November, used on CL. For $100. My concern was how well it was cared for and if it would keep cold.

It was stored outside in a built in BBQ/kitchen setup, but the house had been sold and turned into a rental. Not sure the market for 5k SQ ft rentals but whatever.

Well it kept cold for about a week while in the garage but then it wouldn't keep a consistent temp. It kept fluctuating by 10 degrees from 40F to 50F.

No biggie. I knew going in that this had $200-250 in parts not including the fridge, and the parts looked clean enough.

I had a spare fridge to use that could fit a 1/6 keg. Drilled a hole in the top praying no refrigerant lines were in the top, and started to go to work.

1in hole saw through the top for the beer line.

Cut out the shelf on the bottom of the door so the keg sat on the floor.

Shoved it under the bar.

Got to work on a tower cooler.

Ran the beer line through a copper pipe up into the beer tower. Used a 5v fan running on a cell phone charger to pump air out the fridge up into the copper pipe, and used pipe insulation around the copper pipe into beer tower to keep everything nice and cold.

I replaced the beer line for $5 from Amazon, ordered a cleaning kit, and cleaned everything up.

My keg coupler didn't clean up very well so I ordered a stainless one vs the cast one that came with it.

Filled up my CO2 tank.

Then I was ready for my first keg of Legends Brown.

Then a keg of Devil's Backbone, and a keg of Blue Moon.

Each keg I was battling inconsistent CO2 levels, and without drinking every night my tap would stick shut due to dried beer.

So I ordered and just installed some upgrades.

First a Perlick faucet. The design seals right at the spout vs where the faucet connects to the tower, limiting the amount of space beer is exposed to air and thus has the chance to dry and gunk your faucet up.
Not necessary, but I used one at a buddies place and he said his were never hard to open up, and it was only $30.

Then to combat my CO2 inconsistency I upgraded my regulator. Who knows how old it was and how well the diaphragm was regulating.

I then found a keg cap tap handle. A machined piece of aluminum that will hold the dust cap from the keg and display what is on tap. It is a very nice piece.

There is water on it, not blemishes.

So anyway, get a kegerator, you won't regret it.

I probably would have spent the same amount had I just bought the kit in the first place, but it was fun to piece things together and upgrade as I went along.

Basic bitch pool drinking beer is now on tap.

My only problem is a keg usually costs more than bottles for cider. I looked into building one when I had some extra monies out of a chest freezer. I could have gotten all the parts at my works cost but I never got around to doing it Cry I have Lincoln's old mini fridge I could turn into a cheaper smaller version I guess but I'd need an external temp regulator or something cause last time I used it, it just froze everything regardless of the setting it was on. I still have my mini fridge too but that's full of beer and is kinda nice to be cutting into.

Perlick seems to be the way to go. I like the look of the traditional better I think but they do get pretty dirty with the way they seal. Especially with the frequency of home use.

The Legends and Devil's Backbone were break even, keg vs bottle. The cheap stuff like Blue Moon and Shocktop is usually way cheaper to go the keg route.

I don't like apples or cider, but I find myself drinking this more than I can to admit because beer makes me feel like crap. It's also a higher ABV and can content, so it's not a bad way to get on the horse quickly. :lol:

I recently tried the Wyndridge Pear Cider my local watering hole had on tap. Started the pint out thinking it was bland and almost tasteless but once I got used to it it had a nice, mild, moldy pear flavor, but in a good way.

I also hit up Carpool with co-workers last week and was very surprised by their cider selection. I got a Jack's Dry Hopped in a can there that is hands down the best hopped cider I've ever tasted. Much less sweet than the Bold Rock or Woodchuck hopped variations, and it's not overpoweringly sour.

The rub is that I can't find that shit in stores or online. And I need more of it.

Big fan of Jack's, local place (Shenandoah Hops) keeps it in stock on the reg.

I don't think I cared for their hopped but can't remember for sure. I might still have a can for tasting purposes this weekend though. But I also like sweet. I think bold rock has the best hopped that I've had and it's pretty much my bud light (meaning the one I always go back to and have on hand or what I drink on the weekends). I think it's also hands down leaps and bounds better than anything else bold rock has including all their seasonals. And the only one that comes close is the orchard frost available only up at the cidery in the winter.

I think I've seen the pear you mentioned at total wine but only in 6 pks and I didn't think it worth it at the time but maybe I'll give it a try. I hate that you can't pull from 6pks at total wine like you can from small stores. (You can though cause it'll ring up but it's frowned upon but not sure what they'd actually do to you. Is it stealing?)

I like how this thread keeps becoming the cider thread lol

After re-having the schilling GF at jack browns rva a couple weekends ago, had to make a special trip to total wine.

Bought a bunch of singles to try including a not your father's mountain ale (I think was the name). Neon green in color so I'm assuming it's like mountain dew.
