2007 Toyota 4Stunner - Senor_Taylor - 02-21-2018

So I have a fine from Loudoun County to pay for not having a sticker on the 4Runner? It's not even titled in this county? Is it by registration? I logged on to pay the fee for it a long time ago and only the BMW was listed?

What is this BS?

So I've always titled cars where I actually live (i.e. stop titling them at your mom's place) because it's my legal address. That said, I have "garaged" cars in Harrisonburg due to emissions stuff, and for those cars, I must follow Harrisonburg's rules for sticker placement and pay property tax to that city.

I believe you should be paying property tax for whatever city/town the vehicle is registered or garaged in (garaged takes precedence over registration, both can be different than where it is titled). Alexandria made me pay to get a sticker for the F150 and Range Rover. I paid the $50 or whatever it was, but refuse to put them on the car. I think they changed our law to say that you must pay whatever annual fee but don't have to display a sticker anymore.

I would call them and ask why the 4Runner wasn't listed online. If nothing else, dispute it.

Windshield stickers, front plates, arbitrary city property taxes, dumb tint laws, emissions testing...man I don't miss the Communistwealth at all

2007 Toyota 4Stunner - Senor_Taylor - 02-21-2018

Just got off the phone with them, I'm just going to re register my car and pay the fine/taxes. It's not worth my time.

My 4runned is garaged in Lynchburg but I'm not dealing with this mess. I tried. The government wins again.

Big Grin Big Grin

In NC you do still have the tint laws and safety inspections...if they did emissions it was never anything more than checking to see if you had a CEL on.  But to be fair I have not heard of one person getting pulled over for tint here.  You just have to get creative when it comes time for your yearly inspection.  Cool

The man gets his money, one way or another.

Property tax, registration fees, sales tax, employment tax. Tax, tax, tax. Worrying about which form it is, is just pissing into the wind.

Edit: please dont confuse me as one of those 'taxation is theft' people though

Except since SALT limitations have made that a little more tricky. Choosing what taxes are more applicable to you vs others can reduce your tax base overall.

Just in state/local taxes next year I will be saving approximately $5600 in CASH by moving to NC. Combine that with SALT federal changes and I’ll be saving even more.

Just to clarify, not a reason to move for $5600 a year; but it does matter what kind of taxes are what for you personally. Yeah a yearly work bump probably gets you more than that, but i will always be up for paying less!

help, help, I'm being oppressed

RE: 2007 Toyota 4Stunner - WRXtranceformed - 02-21-2018

I got a huge tax impact moving 8 miles across the border from NC to SC. Lowering your tax liability is absolutely something you can and should consider if possible.

Can you garage a car wherever you please or do you need to have an address that it is garaged at? For anyone looking, Chesterfield county did away with the stickers and does not have emissions.... For now at least

No need for a mailing address as they send all correspondence to whatever your registration "primary" address is.

Just be aware you pay taxes where the car is garaged.  This confuses your local county sometimes, and you have to make sure to avoid paying double taxes (And then having to email/mail proof to the other county you already paid taxes).  Wonder how I know?  Verona County and Fairfax County tried 2 years in a row to pull that shit show and I can tell you Verona County only accepts snail mail....

RE: 2007 Toyota 4Stunner - WRXtranceformed - 02-26-2018

Taylor, if you traded or sold this per your Facebook posts, if you paid the taxes you might be able to file for a partial refund.

Same thing happened with me when I garaged in Harrisonburg but lived in Leesburg. Tried to double charge for property tax
