"Some rust on body"
"Tape deck y'all"
"$900"

Why hasn't someone bought this yet? Taylor, ignore your finals and go become a Honda owner.

Brandon - the only Acura you'd want to use is an Integra, which is effectively a Civic anyway. But for more money.

What about a 370?

The only 370 I know of is a relatively new Nissan, which would be slightly beyond the budget.

I keep hearing "preferably" a trailer. Knock that out of your mind right now.

No trailer, has to be registered and can be driven on street. I don't think you guys realize how much time/effort/money it is running a trailer. I can tell you this is a hard stop for actually getting use out of the car. Also whoever is storing it needs to move it easily, as cars that can't move without a trailer end up sitting A LOT.

Honda/Acura/Miata..go for it. Volvo? Sounds cool, but look how many actually run around and take the abuse...(and are fun to drive)

Just remember what alumni in the club has resources/money/time that WANT to donate to the effort. Leveraging their experience, spares, parts using a well known formula is the only reason I would suggest an E36/E46. Hate me all you want, til you realize the amount of spare parts Jake/I/friends replace on a active basis that are still very useable for a street car.

I also agree with some on here, autox/rallyx only. Approaching the track day thing is too expensive and too much liability.

I think it can be pulled off, but avoid "off the wall" projects. MM already tried that with Merkurs and that project failed miserably and ended up being a pain later.

What was Merkurs? Want to know what mistakes were made and what we should avoid doing, or do instead. Also, didn't realize how much the 350z went for lol so never mind on that.

We bought 5 Merkur XR4Ti's for like, $800 with the hope of compiling them into one decent GRM $20XX challenge car. No one really took the reigns and drove the project and it ultimately got abandoned. Someone who was in JMU/Harrisonburg at the time can probably give more detail as to what eventually happened with those cars.

All I know is that I got into a 2 lane tank slapper while towing one of the cars back to JMU, and later fell off a trailer and ended up with a leg contusion after towing another one to a shop somewhere near Fredericksburg. Two of my 3 worst trailer mishaps

Re: MM Club Racecar - Jake - 03-02-2017

Merkur was a European Ford brand that they brought here in the late 80s and sold through Lincoln Mercury dealerships. Mercury was a brand that Ford also sold in the US that was slightly nicer than a Ford but not as nice as a Lincoln. Lincoln is a Ford brand that still exists and nobody remembers anyway Wink Pete (another alumni) has an XR4ti that's a track car. They used the same turbo 4-cyl that the Mustang SVO of the same era ran. Pretty cool and rare to see nowadays.

I don't really remember the MM Merkur project as it was before my time, but I think it involved a few cheap XR4ti's and a lot of ambition, that never went very far.

Re: MM Club Racecar - Jake - 03-02-2017

Also, yeah, towing is a pain in the ass. Don't do that. Street car only. You can have a car fairly stripped/prepped and have it still be technically street-legal.

Please tell me (given this was Early MM we're talking about) you were towing the car with something wildly unfit to tow a lawn mower, let alone a Merkur.

My memory is a little foggy (god I am getting old), but JMU demanded they be taken away. I remember going over there a couple times to get the project restarted or trashing them; one of the two . Can't remember, but it was too ambitious

The main issue was that none of the cars were in close to running condition. Buy a running, driving car.

I was towing it with my V8 Tundra. The problem was that the trailer I'd bought had a big utility box at the front for tires. Worked fine for towing a fwd car, but with a rear wheel drive car the weight was distributed improperly. On a wet day on the highway it was...interesting

Re: MM Club Racecar - Jake - 03-02-2017

Maan, I was hoping the tow vehicle was like, a 1997 Nissan Quest or something.

I would expect a move like that out of Rex and Dave trying to bring home 17 Geo Metros.

Oh my god #dead

Re: MM Club Racecar - *insertusernamehere* - 03-02-2017

I only care to temper your expectations of the Volvo. They are heavy, slow but torquey 4 cylinders with an archaic suspension setup. Definitely not saying it won't be fun but don't expect *too* much. They're also extremely basic cars so there's nothing special to know. Check all the same shit you would with a civic or corolla and if it checks out you're good to go.

Re: MM Club Racecar - JPolen01 - 03-02-2017

You're thinking of a different Dave, Matthew. Next time you see Rex or Dave Allen ask them about the Geo story.

And if anyone wants that volvo in Elkridge lemme know. That's my backyard.
