This. I think this is what I imagine makes this car a great commuter (to an extent). I suspect that you can hang in 3rd in the typical NOVA 25-35 rolling stop nonsense and on the tip of the throttle have the I-6 monster open right up. I'm guessing the RPM's there are right on the brink of it being some-what quiet to hold onto your seat. Sounds like you're really enjoying the car and that makes me happy to hear.

just saw this - might come in handy the next time you need to do an oil change.

recommendations seem to fall to a 50wt oil instead of the OEM recommended 60, due to how long it takes a 60 to heat up. i'd think with you using the car as a commuter with so much sitting in traffic and low oil temps,, it would only exacerbate the issue on an old engine that uses rod bearings as a consumable part.

Be sure to use Red Line Synthetic Oilâ„¢ for the best performance in your BMW! It's the only oil engineered to BMW in your German engineering!

Black kidneys swapped for chrome, and US Millworks tow hook license plate mount set up.

If I have some time this weekend, I need to run the microphone for the Bluetooth adapter, so I can actually use it for phone calls.

Nice, I like the chrome. This thing is beautiful, I'm looking forward to seeing it!

Re: 2006 BMW M3 - Jake - 11-07-2016

So, woke up early and drove to Winchester yesterday for the final Mercedes Benz Club autocross of the season. Was a good time with some Benz friends, MMers, and NASA friends all there. Very "laid back" aka slowwww event, but the slow pace was kind of nice for a change.

We got six runs (3 morning, 3 afternoon). I hit cones on every morning run but was relatively fast. Focused the afternoon on just getting clean runs, which I did each time. Managed a 58.0 second run as my best clean one, which I think put me solidly mid-pack (there were some 53-54's that I believe were the fastest).

As for the car, it was very quick but full of understeer and the brakes kind of sucked. I think both annoyances can be largely attributed to the tires. The car is on all-seasons - 500 TW Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on the rear and 560 TW Bridgestone(?) something-or-others on the front. It's also rubbing in the rear under heavy load - not badly but makes me want to roll the rear fenders as a preventative measure. Zack told me it involves a bit of work so I may go down to Richmond and do it with him at his shop next month sometime.

Part of me wants to sell the 19" E92 wheels and get a set of 18's with slightly better tires. Probably won't do anything until spring, unless I catch a great deal on a wheel I like, either new or used. Good thing is the E92 wheels seem to be pretty desirable so they should sell quick enough.

Those are 19's? I meant to ask you about those b/c I honestly thought they were 20's or 21's  They look yuuuuuuuuge, so I could see how they'd rub

I have no idea what sizes they come in but the comp wheels are some of the prettiest ever, IMO.

Re: 2006 BMW M3 - SlimKlim - 11-07-2016

The OEM CSLs were also 19" I believe, I think it'd look weird to stick 18s on in that style.

The car looks gorgeous with 19"s but I suspect it'd be noticeably more comfortable on his urbanish commute with some actual sidewall.

I've been counting down the days until those aftermarket springs break him and he starts shopping for OEM ones. ;-)

Re: 2006 BMW M3 - Jake - 11-07-2016

Ha, yeah, just 19's - and the car did come on 19's from the factory, just a different style and offset. The offset is really the issue here as E92 M3's have slightly different numbers. It mostly works, but once you break away from the commuting and hard-parking lyfe, it'll rub here and there. Not a huge issue but I would also like a taller sidewall to help with all the shit roads and potholes around here.

Dammit, DJ.

In my search for a new car, every time I see an E46 M3 I have to try really hard to not go drive one. This doesnt help.

you haven't driven one yet? don't do it if you aren't ready to pull out a checkbook for one. the hype is real.

You know what is going to make that worse? I think they have hit either rock bottom or close to it in pricing.

I drove an S5 with aftermarket pipes last weekend... hard to beat that sound. Also on the list to drive is S4, 135 & 228.... what's a nice M3 go for these days? $15k-20k? Alpine white over cinnamon, please.

15-20k gets you a REALLY nice M3. Dont worry about mileage, find a good condition aesthetic one for $15k and dump 3-4k into it and youll have a brand new car and address all the weaknesses.

I don't follow the market that closely, but yeah, $15-20k will get you a good example in a regular-ass color combo. Cool combos will get a premium on top of just being damn hard to find. Good luck with Alpine/Cinnamon.

I agree that they've probably bottomed out.

BTW Jake, those chrome grills look way more better.

Re: 2006 BMW M3 - Jake - 11-08-2016

Coupes cost more than 'verts.

6-speeds cost more than SMG.

$10-20k is where they are right now, although anything around the $10k mark will be kinda beat. I looked at several that presented well enough until you looked closer. Seems like $13k+ is where you start to see legitimate nice examples, price otherwise dependent on mileage. I was frustrated by so many that only had 40k or some low number on them. I wanted one with rock chips and door dings so I wouldn't feel bad about doing that to it myself.
