I missing one of those caps. Looks like I need to order one. I'll have to look and pull on the bedliner to see if the top rails are attached or not

It's worth pulling those liners off and paying the extra for the spray on liner over the top of the bed. Much more durable than the plastic cover that comes from the factory.

Finally someone local with a truck. Hey we lost 4 trees last week can I borrow it thanks I'll top it off with premium.

Good looking truck! Aren't you in the Fan? Street parking that monster?

Trip to harrisonburg from richmond today netted me this. I'll take it. 19mpg for a 5000 pound monster or whatever it weighs.

No. Not in the fan I'm like off south pine street at the end and there is parking in unfinished townhouses

That's what my truck gets. I think you're doing just fine.

If anyone tells you to leave your tailgate down for better gas mileage, it actually does the opposite.

Depends. The old f150 at least has a bunch of mounting tabs in them if I recall. If you took and left them off, you'd have a bunch of little holes in your rails. Some trucks also don't look right without them. :dunno: about Gm's though.

The tail gate thing is kind of interesting. I've never been into hypermiling cause I'm usually foot to floor whenever I have something with a v8 or the powerful engine option....ok well always but if you've ever had trash in your bed and watched it the wind kinda bounces off the tailgate and pushes back against the cab. Wonder if it gives you a little push or something. But like most and Ryan plans, a bed cover eliminates that all together.

Re: 2012 Silverado 2500HD Diesel - rherold9 - 07-30-2016

I'm going to keep the top plastic rails on. They have mounting tabs so I don't want to leave a bunch of holes. I'll just line x and have it sprayed under rail. My first purchases with this truck will be the little list DJ and others have said for convenience sake. And I'll leave that shit in the back cabin until I get a new bedliner and a cover.

My only problem as of now is what the fuck to do with the old bedliner if I take it out. It's 6 feet... anywhere that buys them or try to sell it locally and pull it before they get there? Idk. Then I have to organize getting line-x'ed right away after.

Take it to the dump and let them deal with it.

5000lbs is a cute little suv. Your truck is between 7300-7600lbs

Holy dick. I'm very impressed then.

Re: 2012 Silverado 2500HD Diesel - rherold9 - 11-14-2016

Well here comes another shit post on the forums.

TL;DR: Fall Finale tow was mostly a success. I'll be looking for some type of open trailer in the Spring after dealing with UHaul issues and being limited to 55-60mph I want something of my own.

So, I reserved a trailer early in the week and everything was set. I had Friday off work so I got some wood to make easier to get on the trailer and went to pick it up at 1pm. The trailer was dug deep behind other trailers and some dude was refusing to move until the manager finally came to the reacue. Anyways 50 minutes later I finally fucking left UHaul.

Get back, lay the ramps down, and put wood underneath, get the car up, but forget to open the trailer tire wells so I can open the door. Drive back off. Open it and see this: [Image: dc640895e9cd77e745ff8e2b5422e0ea.jpg]

Well fuck me right? Have to take the trailer back to UHaul. Was planning on leaving at 2pm but that isn't happening now. Get back to UHaul around 2:30ish. Luckily another trailer has come in. They agree to swap it and knock a day off in the rental price. Thank you friendly manager.

I get back and load up with no issues. Tie everything down, pack up, and head out around 4:20pm. According to the trailer I'm limited to 55mph... I stuck the cruise around 58-59 and I felt like was standing still on I-64... was not fun at all. I take back roads after 64 which was much better. And make it there around 7:30ish.

First time towing long distance when it is night time is not fun. Not knowing the trailer width, etc... isn't ideal when you have someone on coming and can't see the lines behind you but it all worked out.

The truck did great job and handled it like there was nothing behind it. UHaul trailers only have an emergency brake but with a quick touch of a button the truck goes into a towing mode which engine breaks and keeps rpm's higher which helped tremendously. The truck's brakes had no issues stopping for deer at over 55mph downhill so I'll take it. This truck makes towing so easy....

Leaving on Sunday... or so I thought:

I got all packed up to leave and go to start the truck. Everything seems normal, but it cranks once and the dash lights reset but nothing happens. Try it a few more times and no dice. Well I guess Chevrolet doesn't cut power to the trailer plug and I left it in all weekend and killed my battery. Luckily Jake and Sean are there and lend me a hand to let the battery charge and the truck started. I get back home with no issues as well.

Overall, it was a great first longish tow! Loving the truck and no problems after 5k miles. Plus the truck got 14.9mpg on hilly back roads with small part on mostly flat I-64. Not too shabby.

I never unhook my trailer during the weekend and have never had an issue in 7 years between my denali + open, denali + 24', Diesel + 24', or diesel +36'..... If it was an issue with the "power in the plug"; I think I would have found it by now.

Something else was up.

Who knows but no signs of a bad battery until I towed. I charge my go pro twice for an hour on the 'acc' and that was all. Would not surprise me if the UHaul trailer wiring had a power draw...

Truck started on two cranks as normal this morning.

Re: 2012 Silverado 2500HD Diesel - Senor_Taylor - 11-14-2016

I'd bet 100% it was the trailer. Those things suck. None of your lights were on and I didn't notice anything odd about it. Unless you somehow managed to not shut your door or left an interior light on when you hopped in to charge your GoPro. How old is the battery?

Re: 2012 Silverado 2500HD Diesel - Jake - 11-14-2016

Yeah, I never unplugged my trailer with the Denali and never had issues (one thing that went right with that POS!). My Ford doesn't cut power entirely either, as the trailer lights will come on with the cab lights if you open a door with the truck off.

I noticed that the UHaul trailer had incandescent bulbs, not LED. I'm wondering if there was some wiring fuckery going on with that particular trailer and the bulb(s) affected caused a lot of draw as the truck sat for two days. Hopefully your batteries are still good - given the truck is only a 2012, I'd think they still are.

Slight correction about the trailer brake, too - it's not really an "emergency" brake, it's just not electric. UHaul trailers have a spring that, when you brake, compresses and activates hydraulic brakes on the trailer wheels. Just so you don't think #MightyMightyDuramax was stopping the entire load unassisted - it's definitely working harder than it would with electric trailer brakes, but it's got some help.

Assuming the UHaul trailer has working brakes in the first place. Which... is anyone's guess.

Re: 2012 Silverado 2500HD Diesel - Senor_Taylor - 11-14-2016

Aren't most batteries only "guaranteed" for 4 years? Seems possible it's a combination of draw and an aging battery. I know most decent batteries last much longer than that. Not saying it's likely, but it's also possible and should be checked, especially with the CCA required to start a diesel.

I asked UHaul and the manager and he said no there is no trailer brake. If the trailer somehow got loose from the hitch the chains would pull on the emergency brakes as they are attached to a spring which he pointed to me. I was like oh that makes sense. During a stop there is nothing tugging on those chains when connected to the hitch. There is no way it's braking itself.

Edit:

Emergency brake chain

Trailers with brakes have a third chain, called the emergency brake chain (E). This chain applies the brakes automatically in the unlikely event of a separation of the trailer from the tow vehicle. Attach this chain as close to the vehicle center as possible; to the tow vehicle permanent hitch, frame or structure, or to the bumper brackets. Twist chain to take up most of the slack and secure ā€œSā€-hook with rubber retainer. Some slack is necessary to prevent the emergency brake from activating on turns or inclined driveways.

Odd, UHaul's website claims that all of their trailers have a surge brake system for regular stopping.

:dunno: probably has both then and the manager doesn't even know. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.
