Re: Project: Swagger Wagon - Apoc - 06-18-2017

Posting one more pic with the hatch open all the way - plenty of space.

The one thing I forgot to mention is I opted for aeroblades because I think I'm going to leave them on the car permanently. I wanted quiet and efficient, so I spent the extra money. I also went with the Thule Hyper XL because it's advertised to be a good bit more fuel efficient. I'm not super worried about economy because the car is decent, but I didn't want it to be loud and/or get blown around in the windstorms we get somewhat frequently. Dollah billz y'all.

I don't know how you guys are so hot and bothered over a stock car with a roof box. This forum is so weird.

Re: Project: Swagger Wagon - Apoc - 06-18-2017

My dad can beat up your dad.

You're the one who thinks a new Civic is an attractive vehicle.

You're all dumb and you're all wrong. All cars are ugly. Nothing is cool. Sell your vehicles and buy stock in horses. They're making a comeback and I'm riding the wave to money town.

Ok, Brandi, calm down

Re: Project: Swagger Wagon - Apoc - 06-23-2017

Did 300 miles with the box fully loaded today. I had two carry on suitcases, a small duffel, a kid hauler backpack, another osprey pack, sun shade, kites, and my fly rod in there with a little bit of room to spare. I didn't notice the box in handling, other than the car being heavy, and it was very slightly audible at speed with the roof closed and sun shade open. It was 100% silent with the sun shade closed, which may be helped by the fact it's a BMW. I wasn't able to get a good read on gas mileage, but will try and capture it on the way home. I have zero regrets.

Ah the joys of traveling with a baby/toddler.

Re: Project: Swagger Wagon - Apoc - 08-08-2017

Took a camping trip last weekend with the kid. I'll post more details in the camping thread once I get the pictures online, but I wanted to say this wagon and a roof box are about the right size. There were one or two things that we would have liked to bring, but they absolutely were not necessarily and, in hindsight, we probably wouldn't have used them.

The box had some heavier items in it this time around and car was noticeably top heavy. It wasn't bad enough to effect handling or to prevent me from doing 80 down the highway, but it definitely affected the dynamics. I would describe it as similar to driving an SUV or something. I meant to get an MPG reading, but forgot, again. I guess that means I really don't care how it's affecting things.

The box itself will likely come off in September, after a few trips to the airport with four people inside. My guess is it won't go back on until spring, when road trip season picks back up. We get compliments about the car on a semi-routine basis, so maybe the tide is turning against CUV/SUVs? Yeah, probably not.

I had a weird thing happen while buying firewood. I was tired and hadn't had any coffee and every time I tried to drive off, the car would jerk to a halt and make all kinds of noise. It took me 30 seconds to process what was actually happening, but eventually realized the car was automatically applying the parking brake because the driver door was slightly ajar. I personally think that's very intrusive and, perhaps, potentially damaging to the car because it only happens after you start moving. It makes me wonder what happens if the door was opened at speed. Surely BMW is smart enough to just give you an audio warning?

After the problem with the Jeep Grand Cherokees not being put into park correctly, I think most people would disagree with you. Especially the guy that got mowed down by his own Jeep and died.

Re: Project: Swagger Wagon - Apoc - 08-08-2017

Then don't let the car be put in gear or automatically apply the brake when the door is open.

It's a pretty simple fix to not have the car grind to a halt after it starts moving.

Reminds me of when I was a kid, already infatuated with anything related to cars. I was riding down the highway with my dad in our '98 Explorer and I asked if it was possible to roll start an automatic like a manual.

He said "I dunno!" and threw it in neutral and shut the car off. Turns out you can't.

What did he do next, turn it to "On" and slip it into Drive?

Re: Project: Swagger Wagon - SlimKlim - 08-09-2017

Yes. Car didn't respond at all if I remember right, I'd guess most autos have some sort of safety override to keep it in neutral if the car is off, moving, and shifted into gear at the same time.

Where's the repeated trials? I'll be over in 5. We're about to get scientific.

Odd, I've done it in multiple automatic cars and it will go into drive and continue.

Done it on my truck probably 10 times as I switch it to manual mode when I get stuck behind traffic going up a hill fully loaded.

With the ignition off? Every auto I've ever had won't let you shift out of P or N with the ignition off.

The GTI won't even let me turn the car off completely unless it's out of gear. It's actually saved my ass a few times, being sleep deprived due to an infant, because I've tried to remove the key with the car in D more than once.
