I've got about 4k miles in the thing now, many trips to Lowe's, and still love the thing. I really do think it's gotta be one of the best highway cars on the planet.

Just got done doing a bunch of little stuff. First, the things you can see:

Adjusted the alignment of the bumpers. In the rear, the middle had proper gap while the sides were a bit low. 15 minutes to adjust the bumper shocks and it's way better. Before on the left, after on the right.[Image: IMG_2644_zpsj2zfgk0t.jpg]

Replaced the "pork chop" panels under the corners of the front bumper, which were pretty torn up. Also installed 12.5mm spacers on the front, which were far more sunken in than the rears. It's a bit more symmetrical front/rear now and stancebro.[Image: IMG_2660_zpskgkbk1uc.jpg][Image: IMG_2659_zps9fhqpzji.jpg]

And the stuff you can't see:
  • Swapped the solid caliper guides for rubber ones (the squeak came back as DJ predicted, and this seems to have fixed it, hopefully for good).
  • Fixed torn line for headlight sprayers...which I don't so much care about but at least it doesn't just dump fluid on the ground now. Thanks BMW for putting the tank behind the fender liner behind the front wheel.
  • New engine air filters.
If anyone wants a twinsie, check this out before it winds up at EAG for an even more ridiculous price.

Also, after spending some time on forums, I think the fact that the online community insists on calling these things "beasts" is mad corny.

Seriously, dude, quit doing this stuff to us. My heart can't take it.

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - Beej - 11-04-2015

Apparently the sun isn't supposed to blaze down on babies. I didn't want to tint the windows and didn't really like any of the baby-store window shades that either use suction cups or clip to the top of the window. I'm kinda surprised there aren't more options, but I found a company in the UK that makes custom fit ones and had them shipped over the pond. It's a six piece kit (roll down section, triangle section, 2 for the rear window), installs in minutes, and fits well. Apparently you can roll your windows down with them in and everything.

Ignore the weird stitch lines and whatever, Panorama was struggling.

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - JPolen01 - 11-04-2015

Why no tint? With tint today you don't have to go very dark to block out UV rays (assuming that's what's bad for babies).

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - Senor_Taylor - 11-04-2015

I'm not a fan of tint, either. A lot of times, it seems tacky to me.

Until you have it and realize how much your quality of summer driving life improves. Seriously, tint all the things.

You couldn't have retrofit the OEM power shades? I always thought those were useless until I realized how nice it would be for dogs and babies.

I dunno, I just kinda prefer cars without it - looks cleaner, less top heavy? But it's been on the M3 since I've had it and I don't really notice it anymore, so I guess I don't feel that strongly about it. Maybe if the car weren't garaged.

I actually really wanted that option, but it isn't available on full leather cars so you've gotta cut up your fancy door panels to install it. I've looked into retrofitting it, but between sourcing all of the parts (like actually functioning blinds and matching trim pieces: shadowline interior trim, alcantara rear deck for when I mess up cutting mine, button panel with my exact options, etc.), and the cutting/drilling/riveting/epoxying of the install...well I wanted to give these a shot first. I still may do the rear sunshade (only power one, the rest are manual, btw), as the parts are a little more readily available and it looks easier to install.

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - WRXtranceformed - 11-05-2015

I couldn't function without tint down here, way too hot in the summer. It also makes the car look x1000000 better. Not a bad route you went though!

The yag has a rear power shade that just covers the rear window which is kind of nice, nothing on the rear passenger windows though

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - SlimKlim - 11-05-2015

I have an irrational aversion to tint after I spent an afternoon in July using a wallpaper steamer to remove the old bubbling, yellowing, nasty shit one of the previous owners put on my BMW. It was like being in a sauna, inside another sauna.

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - JPolen01 - 11-05-2015

That is completely irrational. Of course old tint is going to suck. It's got a limited number of years like anything else on this planet. It makes the car look better, makes the car cooler, and keeps people from seeing you rollin up that j as you sit in the walmart parking lot.

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - SlimKlim - 11-05-2015

It's just not something I've ever felt enough of a need for to spend my hard earned money on. I park in the shade and I minimize illegal behavior in my car. :dunno:

I think y'all just need to work on your tans if the sun is bothering you that much Big Grin

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - davej - 11-05-2015

The Odyssey has pull up shades in the [automatic] sliding doors...did I mention it's for sale? I'd probably even consider a straight up trade.

on another note, is there any way you'd consider removing the DINAN badge? Don't get me wrong, I 1000% love this car, but I don't know if it's the font or all caps or what, but they've always bothered me. I'd vote for complete debadging, just in case you're taking a poll.

That particular badge has always bothered me too. It seems like it was such an afterthought. I didn't even notice it on this car though. :dunno:

The man has a cherry M5. He can have whatever badge he wants.... I like it, it seems very period correct.

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - Apoc - 11-05-2015

cherry. period.

menstruation.

Re: A bit late to the angel eye party: 2001 M5 - davej - 11-05-2015

there's cherry, then there's cherry with whipped cream and a cherry on top.
