Any wrangler that isn't a 4cyl or a rusted piece of dog shit is gonna be more than you wanna pay.

I kinda dig the Ranger idea. Gets ok gas mileage, dead reliable, and has utility that home owners often need.

and, like owning a prius, people judge your character

GF's sister just bought a brandy fucking new '14 4 door Wranger to my dismay. I practically begged her to buy the Grand Cherokee or Cherokee instead, but she had an old WJ GC way back when and wouldn't consider a new one based off of that experience. She's already modified the shit out of it and it might see a sandy beach road three or four times in its life. She does look outdoorsy as shit when she arrives at her destination, so there's that.

But yeah, she took us to lunch a few weeks ago, cool Jeep, terrible car. No space inside for it's size because it's still body on frame, and we bobbed and swayed so much when we hit a small dip in the road I thought we were going to hit a curb. Apparently Wranglers have the best resale of any other car in the country right now, which is a mindfuck and a half on it's own. I'd take the fuck-ugly Cherokee over the Wrangler six ways to Sunday.

Uncle has a 89-92 body style, 4cyl, extended cab, and the thing will not die.

I would get the extended cab if I were shopping for one, just for the covered cargo space for bags, luggage, general crap. Unless you plan on doing a bed cover or a shell.

It will have to be a TJ Wrangler to be in the price point. Even then 10k doesn't buy much, if you want decent miles in a 4.0 Auto you will pay for it for sure.

If you are thinking on a small truck what about a King Cab Nissan Frontier? RWD, 4cyl SE with 127k?

I like the Ranger idea, too. Get the 4.0L extended cab and it will have some (adequate) grunt. They're not bad little trucks.

if I were shopping for an off road vehicle to drive 100% off road, thats exactly what I say about a ferrari 458

no, you judge a car based on what you want to do with it.
If I want to buy a TV, Im fairly certain the best microwave on the market isnt going to make me happy.

I don't know. The clarity of the hot pocket channel is pretty nice.

the civic hatch idea was better.... at least than taking the bus.

If we're banging back and forth about Wranglers/Truck utility just buy a fucking 97+ Cherokee and be done with it.

4 doors, ass loads of cargo room, can tow a trailer (I towed Peter's trailer loaded up with shit no problem), stupid reliability (Jalopnik rated it #4 of the 10 most reliable vehicles you can buy for under $5000 SEE (only second to the Ranger), and given it's relatively small size and wheelbase you can parallel park that bitch like a boss. I've done it a million times in DC..

Ranger or XJ. I'm a fanboi so go XJ. I would buy either honestly.

Well I thought one of his draws to Seattle was "less." He's now looking at three cars and not taking advantage of the benefits of where he lives.

We're supposed to be enablers here. Why do you hate America?

I know precisely 0% about actual interior dimensions, but I find Wranglers far more comfortable to fold myself into compared to an XJ. Cherokees are TINY.

I'm still on a bus at least a dozen times a week, including taking one to a concert last night... so... try again. It's just not practical for going to the gym and doctors appts - combined I average ~4/week. For example, I had an 8am ortho appt this morning and then went to work. Via bus, I would have had to leave my house probably by 7 and wouldn't have gotten to work until 10. Instead, I drove to both and it took me 1.5 hours less. Then, I'm going to drive from work to the gym to get my swole on. Again, generally a PITA via bus.

You will never get me to bike on city roads. You can thank constant bitching about car drivers by all you bikers for that.

Different for everyone. I've logged hours upon hours of seat time long distance driving and 5mph wheeling and haven't ever felt like I couldn't "stretch" out. On the other hand, have you ridden in the back of a wrangler...? :?

I don't fit in the back of either Tongue

As far as driving position, I feel less squished in the TJ versus the XJ. Not sure why as a lot of tall guys seem to love 'em. Ah well.
