Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 05-14-2013 Yeah I really wanted to do the Nexus 7 thing, but my factory head unit sounds good, plays my ipod, and looks like it belongs. Its a whole lot easier and cheaper to spend $80 for this little project than $400+ on a project that involves fiberglassing. The E36 needs too much crap to justify it. Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - GregF - 05-14-2013 I did this with my Samsung galaxy tab but it was way too big to keep in the car. I used that OBD2 module too and it worked...most of the time. It looks like itll be a nice setup! Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - BFisch06 - 05-15-2013 I've had that BAFX OBD2 bluetooth adapter for 3 or 4 months now. Use the track recorder Torque add-on when I do autocross. It overlays the gauges on the video and you can download and convert it and throw it on YouTube. You can also access all of the data points since they're all saved in CSV format. Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 05-17-2013 IT WORKS!! (for the most part) ![]() ![]() ![]() The big gauge is boost obviously, then coolant temp, transmission temp, intake air temp, voltmeter, mass air flow rate and throttle position. Unfortunately the car doesn't seem to have any OBD Parameters for engine oil temp or pressure, which seems strange but whatever. The boost will spike up to 13-14psi, but holds more like 10-12, which seems in line with what a stock GTI should do. The one thing I find strange is if I go WOT in 4th, 5th or 6th, the gauge will only jump to about 8 psi, does that sound correct? Also, the coolant temperature and transmission temperature are always the exact same value, from cold start to when I took the picture they never varied, which seems really odd. And the Throttle position is never lower than 11-12% at idle and never higher than 87% at WOT, not sure if that's correct... The Voltmeter is obviously low but I found another parameter for it that seems more accurate. I still have lots of fiddling to do, I want to get the readings as fine tuned as possible, and I need to figure out how to get the phone to behave the way I want, AKA get rid of the lock screen, boot straight to the torque app when it sees power from the car, and go to sleep when it loses it, and then I'll run the charging cable through the dash so it looks cleaner. Also, ![]() *Gulp* Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - WRXtranceformed - 05-17-2013 Reminds me of the old Gameboy Advance I had hooked up and displaying boost / egt etc on the STi ![]() ![]() That was the ish back in the day Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - Apoc - 05-17-2013 Lee, that is some seriously ghetto shit... in an awesome way. Did it also warn you of a danger to your manifold? Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - Jake - 05-17-2013 How the hell did you hook up a Game Boy to a Subaru? Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - V1GiLaNtE - 05-17-2013 I believe it was a OBD cable to the card slot on the gameboy.. Seriously ol skewl' http://www.fastwrx.com/turboxsdtec.html Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - ScottyB - 05-17-2013 lol at that gameboy. totally ingenuitive but wrong at the same time. Joey that phone setup is tits. i need this even though i have no actual need for aux. gauges, just because of the cool factor. Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - WRXtranceformed - 05-17-2013 V1GiLaNtE Wrote:I believe it was a OBD cable to the card slot on the gameboy.. Seriously ol skewl'What he said. It really needed some kind of bracket to keep it open though. The torque hit was so ridiculous in that car that it would always sling the top shut when you mashed the go pedal  Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 05-17-2013 ScottyB Wrote:i need this even though i have no actual need for aux. gauges, just because of the cool factor. Pretty much my entire rationale right there. I'm going to fiddle around with creating my own theme, I wish they were more customizable though. It allows you to change background for a specific PID, but I can't find any way to suppress the title information for a gauge, I can make an RPM gauge that will flash 500 rpms before redline to act as a shift light, but making it large enough to be visible makes the title bleed over onto the the screen, which is stupid. I haven't been able to fiddle with it too much because day job, but I think I can use Tasker to do the sleep/wake behavior I want to make it hands-free. What other parameters might be handy? Exhaust gas temperature? Fuel rail pressure? I think I can get an A/F ratio too... Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 05-22-2013 Insignificant and boring update on my little pet project here: I tweaked one of the existing themes to suit my own preferences and maximize visibility. I have bright white dials/numbers with bright red indicators over a plain black background. I wish the themes were more customizable so you could set specific dimensions for certain parameters to make the best use out of whatever screen size you have, but the themes are just set by a parameter file with a really limited set of values. ^ This is where I'd drop a screenshot of my layout, except apparently taking a screenshot on an android device requires fucking rocket surgery, and I refuse to root for something that stupid, and I dont have access to a PC at the current moment to install the stupid fucking screenshot program because I'm a macfag (and I love it). Because I'm a dipshit, the cig-lighter-to-USB thingy I got only charges at .5a, which is about 1/4 the rate of consumption of the actual phone. I just ordered another 2.1a thingy and when I have it in the car permanently the only things running will be the app and bluetooth, with all other data and apps shut down. Hopefully that will keep it from dying while on standby over night. Also, my do-it-all dashboard/windshield mount does not stick to the dashboard for longer than 4 seconds, so I ordered a little disc with 3M adhesive on one side for $3 to give it a flat place to stick itself too. Mounting it on the windshield makes it too high and too far away, I want it right next to the instrument cluster above the vent. Once this Amazon order shows up and I've verified that I can charge the battery faster than the little piggy can gobble it up, Ill break out the dremel to hide the cable and make the install permanent-ish, the post a pic. I've tried both screenshot tricks about a million times, no dice. It just turns the screen off. Evan I probably should have bought that mount but I didn't like the red grippy parts. The mount i got is sticky on the bottom of the suction cup too, but it just doesn't want to stick where I'd like it because the dashboard is curved. That 3M adhesive is serious stuff, so I think that little disc will stick just fine and give the mount something flat to hold onto. Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk 2 Re: Joey's Totally Predictable DD - SlimKlim - 05-23-2013 Da fuck is going on here? ![]() That little red tick records the highest value, I've seen it spike above 20psi ~3-4 times but haven't actually caught the gauge doing it. On my way home tonight I gave it the beans in 1st and actually caught the gauge jump up to 24psi for a second. Wazzup with that? A stock GTI only maintains 10-12psi and should only spike to like 14-16 from what I understand, even a tuned car shouldn't be going above 20. I'm wondering if its a false reading, I've heard the app can miscalculate the boost if you don't have it configured correctly, but it does show expected values most of the time. Lets say its not a false reading and I am getting a nasty boost spike, what would cause that, bad DV valve? I'm a complete turbo-noob. I know the DVs fail on these cars, and the upgraded replacements are actually pretty cheap, but I haven't heard the "fluttering" that's supposed to indicate a bad one. |
