I'm pretty sure if you're driving a C6, Hummer, Viper, etc...trying to cross the border illegally isn't something that enters your mind that often.

Interesting timing... I pass by a house where some cop from Harrisonburg PD lives. He's got a Crown Vic marked car, and an unmarked Taurus (still has strobes on the parcel shelf).

Driving home tonight, I'm thinking to myself... why in the world do U.S. police departments standardize on large, boats of cars? The Crown Vics aren't way fast, they don't corner overly well, they seem to be kinda like a Mustang in that they do nothing really well.

Why not have specialized cars for different areas - like highway patrol vs. city cops? I get the fact that the Crown Vics are durable, but come on...

They're cheap in fleet sales, dependable, durable, large trunk and interior space with loads of room for computer/printer, weapons, vests etc. Also very comfortable for the cops that pull 8hr shifts in them or longer.

MT did a pretty good article last year or so where they went over American cop cars (Crown Vic, Impala, Charger), their features and why they're chosen. Comfort was mentioned a lot and seemed to be one of their highest priorities.

exactly...when your office is a car, it needs to feel comfortable. not to mention the shit they put those cars through. the vics are so popular because they're body-on-frame (easy to repair) with massive cooling systems, heavy suspension for hopping curbs, and big, understressed engines that will run for hours on end, idling if need be, or being floored to redline from a cold start every day.

i see alot of departments going to Tahoes for the same reasons. plus you gotta have alot of room to carry human garbage, weapons, bikes, whatever.

cop cars don't need to be fast or handle well so they don't invest in ones that do. They work in numbers. you could be driving a f1 car, Cops w/ a radio and spike strips, will win 80% of the time, game over.
Every cop I've ever talked to uses the same quote when I ask about chases....."Cant outrun a Motorola."

Mmmm...1000hp Pikes Peak Tacoma. This ran a 9.5 sec. 1/4 mile in Road and Track back in '99 IIRC...on dirt tires. I still have that issue somewhere.

I also couldn't forgo mentioning the Suzuki Escudo, I used to annihilate everything in Gran Turismo 2 with this back in the day.
