Not sure if srs...but to break it down

ATI is a chip designer of graphics cards. Nvidia is a designed of graphics cards. ATI cards are programmed using OpenCL, Nvidia with CUDA (Excluding things like video games). Back in OpenCL's history, Apple has some influence creating the open standard. CUDA is developed by Nvidia, and is also open source. You can't do CUDA programming on an ATI card presently.

Unscientifically, if you google "OpenCL programming" and "cuda programming" you will see that there are 3-4x more hits for cuda programming, which mimcs my real world "I'm a software developer who enjoys programming for GPUs" experience that CUDA is superior for such a use and has more support.

On another note, I do like the idea of the cooling-tower approach to the heat-sink if it works. I also like the onboard PCI controller.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Mike - 06-11-2013

Not sure what GPU programming and the target market have to do with each other. Sure, I get that it's a thing and there is a market, but it doesn't seem to be one Apple has ever cared about. It's like saying a Miata is terrible because it runs 15s. The people who buy Mac Pros do serious image and video editing... not "GPU programming."

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 06-11-2013

Photoshop, Premier, After Effects, etc all use GP/GPU acceleration. The CS 5.5 bundle that I bought a year or so ago supported CUDA but not OpenCL.

maybe OpenCL has picked up steam since then, who knows, but CUDA is definitely the bigger fish with more software support.

and besides, you dont need a 12 core xenon to do regular workstation video editing. That machine has got to be for something else entirely, render farms, 4k video post rendering, etc etc.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 06-11-2013

see? Exactly where I started. Apple creates another cool looking thing. Since Apple created it, it must be for doing something super cool. Therefore, if I needed one, I would logically be a cool guy! :o

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Mike - 06-12-2013

ok so deersty is referencing the code and programs actually produced by gpu programming as opposed to the programming itself. making more sense now...

it doesn't seem like the people are too worried <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://nofilmschool.com/2013/06/mac-pro-amd-gpu-firepro-blackmagic-resolve-10-adobe-cc/">http://nofilmschool.com/2013/06/mac-pro ... -adobe-cc/</a><!-- m -->

Im not a big laptop user, when it comes to getting some actual work done (read: code) I vastly prefer the 2 27" monitors and real keyboard in my office to hunching over a dinky screen and laptop keyboard/medieval torture device, but its a necessity to have one while travelling and a nice to have around the house on the coffee table.
My old single core gateway 11" laptop has been a soldier but with some travelling in the coming months it was high time to upgrade. I ran across a deal on a Lenovo Yoga for over 60% off so I jumped on it and couldnt be happier, especially for the price.

looks just like this
[Image: Lenovo-Yoga-IdeaPad-004.jpg]

Its a thin&light ultraportable 'ultrabook' and i wont bore you with the details. its thin, light, very portable, has a touchscreen and great battery life. Its super fast and boots in an unreal amount of time. instant on from sleep and sub 10 seconds from hibernate. great screen, solid keyboard, multitouch touchpad blah blah blah.
and yeah, it has double hinges so it folds around into 'tent' and 'tablet' mode, but I bought this as a laptop, so i have no real expectations to use it as a 'convertible'. any use of it in alternate modes is a bonus.

honestly, the biggest game changer is the touchscreen. its one of those at first you think "i dont need that in a laptop" until you have it and use it, its so seamless and speeds up everything you do. especially with an OS like windows 8 that is built with touch interface in mind.

make no mistake, win 8 does take some (lot) getting used to, but I think MS is doing a good job bridging the current/past desktop environment with next gen touch centric and mobile interfaces.
(but Im still keeping 7 on my desktop)

Decided to post here rather then start a thread.

I just got an iPhone 5. I am not an Apple person but I needed an Apple exclusive App for my work so thats how shit goes sometimes. So far I like it, already dropped the damn thing once and my case (ordered from amazon) isn't here yet! Anyway, my question is about warranty. Anyone here have warranty on an iPhone? The Sprint warranty sounds like a huge ripoff anyway but worse on the iPhone. Is the Apple Care + or whatever a good thing?

They opened a Microsoft store in the mall by me so I stopped by on my last trip over there. Ive always had macs, but these windows at convertible computers are pretty cool. Id never buy one and expect to be productive but as a second "casual" computer they're cool.

I get applecare on everything I buy from them. I just bought a 5 also and just switched all the phones on our plan from Verizon's insurance to apple care. Over the course of the contracts for all 4 iphones, you save a looooot of money. Plus the insurance is just superior. The plan stays with the phone its self for the life of the phone, even after the contract is ended or renewed. You can make up to 2 claims on the phone, no questions asked and they'll give you a brand new/refurbished phone. The refurbished phones look, act and are of the same quality of brand new iphones. Its a pretty good deal, in my opinion.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 07-09-2013

Anyone looking to add a line to their Verizon Plan? Or switch to Verizon?

I can save $50 a month by cancelling my service and using just my work cell. Termination fee is $240. I can avoid the fee if someone picks up my line.

ORRRRRRRR

Per Ebay a White Verizon 16GB S3 is going for like $300. Ill sell ya my S3 for the cost of my termination fee if you would like to upgrade your current cell. I think it only works with Verizon though so verify it will work on your carrier if you arent on Verizon already.

Been a while since I priced stuff, but think vzw was like $10/month for insurance and there was a $100 deductible for a claim. It cost me like $50 and an hour of my time to put in a new screen for my wife's iphone4. Sure 5 parts are more $ though.

get a decent case, ditch ins. for diy

I actually heard that most carriers, including Verizon, are dropping the ability to get any insurance through them. If you upgrade your phone they wont even let you put insurance on the bill anymore and require you to pay for it with a credit card now. A $100 deductible is outrageous if you ask me.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Jeff - 07-18-2013

Got apple care. $100 up front and 50 deductible works for me. Dealership paid the 100 Smile

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 07-19-2013

Or you could also just get the Galaxy S4 Active and not have to worry about your screen (or phone in general) breaking. It is such a scam how Apple builds their phones to break and people for some reason just don't care about buying a brand new one again when the screen breaks two weeks later. My old S2 is still kicking and I have dropped that thing so hard at dance shows, the pool, etc. I would have been through 6 sheepphones by now

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - .RJ - 07-19-2013

I've broken one screen in 5 or 6 years because I dropped it face down on pavement. I love how android users come up with the most ridiculous justifications for their shitty phone purchase.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 07-19-2013

ive broken 0 screens in the 5-6 yrs I have owned an android phone.

Are you kidding? Every single one of my friends who owns an iPhone, including my fiance, have shattered their iPhone screens at LEAST one time. I have physically been present for at least 2 of those. I have also broken exactly 0 screens in the times I have had my android phones.

i've never broken an iphone or ipad screen and i use them about 10hrs per day.

ironically enough, the manufacturers tend to use the same glass.

if anything (really reaching here), an iphone is more likely to shatter because it's so much more solidly built; your POS plastic phone has crumple zones, more or less, because it's built like a tiger handheld game.

except... <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.neowin.net/news/galaxy-s4-drop-test-shows-cornings-gorilla-glass-3-is-still-not-impact-resistant">http://www.neowin.net/news/galaxy-s4-dr ... -resistant</a><!-- m -->

sorry your friends are tards and your anecdotal evidence is difficult to explain given the facts, lee.

My S3 is like a Saturn Smile So RJ should have one.
