Truck racing is awesome. I love watching those drift semis.
These trucks are different, but what people don't realize is that tractor trailers don't really have that much torque. Usually anywhere between 800-2000 lb-fts. Which in the grand scheme of things, isn't a lot. They just have ridiculous gearing and 18 speed transmissions to always be in the power band, which is always SUPER low. I'm speaking <1500 RPM.
These trucks I'm sure are tuned and have a ton of work done to them.

with as much power as those modified ones are making i wonder how many gears they skip in a race just because they don't need them. i've heard truckers can start out in 3rd or 4th gear with a light load since they have such a huge spread between the high and low ranges. i've tried watching videos of how to shift those trannies, or even crazier the twin-stick ones, and i gave myself an aneurism

Must trucks nowadays don't have twin sticks. That's for those old 2 stroke desiels. I know Peterbuilt's newest motor only revs to a hair under 4k. I used to spend my entire summers on the road with my uncle and biological dad (who owned a trucking business) and it was interesting watching how they drive. The first manual I ever drove was my uncle's Perterbuilt in a parking lot. His was an 18 speed. 1-9, then neutral and you flip a switch on the shifter, then 10-18.
Some trucks even have a gear splitter where you can split each gear into halves. I'm not really sure the logistics of that, though.

They don't use clutches once they start, correct? Yeah I've heard half a gear as well. So you have like 1-6 half. Then you have 7-12 working back towards 1 with rest of the half

that's what i understand too. they "float the gears" which is basically just clutchless shifts. i guess the gears in the tranny are straight cut or engage so you can do it easily and i'm sure working a clutch on a big rig would destroy your leg in a day if you had to shift each of 18 gears all the time.
