This guy's not wrong

You can rally a GTI with big wheels right?

Re: Project RS - Apoc - 08-16-2017

You can rally anything with a Can Do attitude.

^god that thing must be miserable to drive on the highway.

Re: Project RS - Jake - 08-17-2017

If you truly want a three-pedal BMW wagon, my friend Chris would probably sell you his 2002 525iT. Silver on gray, cared for and up to date on everything. Happy to put y'all in touch.

Re: Project RS - RawrImAMonster - 08-17-2017

My 05 WRX Wagon is going to be up for sale (possibly very) soon. Just saying.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

what's the mileage on it again?

Re: Project RS - Maengelito - 08-17-2017

Plug for Jeff's pending 2008 6 speed X3. 260hp, 3 pedals, torque, and you no longer need to use turn signals.

yeah why not that?

Re: Project RS - ScottyB - 08-17-2017

what's repair history / reliability like on a 10 year old BMW? i also hate SUVs. whatever i drive, i want it to be fun.

Maeng you seem to like yours though, right? they look nice on paper.

Re: Project RS - Jake - 08-17-2017

They go around VIR pretty okay.

The 07/08 X3's have the N52 engine which has proven to be very reliable save for the drive belt tensioner (seal fails, slings grease) and oil filter housing gasket (seal fails, slings oil). Both are under $100 and super easy DIYs. The water pump is electric and a bit of a bitch to change when it's 17* that day. Also, it's like $400. I believe they give you a failure warning in the iDrive (low coolant flow or something) or you can just replace every 100k like any other BMW.

There was an issue with the AWD on some of them but I think mostly confined to the earlier years. Something about a solenoid or actuator? Sounded like an easy fix and very commonly known.

Otherwise they're just a big 330xi wagon on stilts.

Jake Wrote:Otherwise they're just a big 330xi wagon on stilts.

i like everything about that except being on stilts. i have no need for more than about 5" of ground clearance. we already own a tippy wagon truck thing.

thanks for the info on the N52 though. everyone i've talked to has said the same thing about them being pretty much tanks.

Maengelito Wrote:Plug for Jeff's pending 2008 6 speed X3. 260hp, 3 pedals, torque, and you no longer need to use turn signals.

which Jeff? i missed this.

i'm sort of picturing one lowered a bit with big mud flaps and some hella fog lights on the front. there could be potential for some rallyx fun but they're pretty heavy. i don't NEED something that tall but i've been trying to find a bmw 3 series wagon that doesn't have 100k+ miles, in a manual, that's less than 400 miles away, in my budget and its almost impossible.

i also would like something that's getting closer to 28-30 mpg highway. we already have a thirsty SUV as it is.

i dunno...i just feel kinda out of my element imaginging driving a BMW suv around...my mother in law will think im pretty cool though.

Re: Project RS - Apoc - 08-17-2017

I'd tell you which Jeff and how to find it, but... just... no.
