Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Sully - 09-29-2014 HAULN-SS Wrote:It's monday and i'm bored. I just placed my first Amazon PrimePantry order. If anyone cares, I priced it out versus the same items on wegman's online shopping list. $80.90 total vs $78.46 before tax for wegman's. That definitely makes it worth not going to the store, if you need to stock up on household things and non perishablesHow about a store other than wegmans? I've never been to wegmans but im pretty sure food lion's prices are lower. This guy's videos are too good. His commentary is spot on. They used to be kinda weak but they have stepped up their game in quality and price. It's not a place you can get everything you need on your shopping list, but for the basics ... my wife has saved ~50% on our grocery bills. Bring your debit card though because they don't take credit. I have never felt good about shopping at Food Lions...they are pretty ghettoHAULN-SS Wrote:It's monday and i'm bored. Publix is pretty much taking over down here though to my absolute joy so we will hit that up to augment our shopping list completion. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Senor_Taylor - 09-30-2014 I've shopped at Food Lion forever. I'm not sure what's ghetto about them, they're just not fancy. I love the ground beef there. And any time I have ever walked into one I just don't get a good "feeling", which is pretty arbitrary but important to me when I am buying food haha. Maybe they are better up that way. The Food Lion account (Delhaize) was also managed by another rep in our office and organizationally they are a complete disaster. I am sure that has tainted my view of them as well. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Sully - 09-30-2014 Mine isn't bad and it's literally less than two miles from me. The martins is about 8 miles maybe but it's an old converted ukrops and doesn't have the size or seems like the selection of the other martins. We are about to get a new big one which will hopefully have the big meat and fish counters as well as a bigger selections. And we are supposed to get a Wegmans but who knows when they'll even start building it. The shopping center it's going in was started right before the economy tanked and has been stalled looking for retailers ever since Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - JPolen01 - 09-30-2014 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Senor_Taylor Wrote:I've shopped at Food Lion forever. It's all relative to what you know/where you grew up. I feel the same way about Food Lion because they are not in the best areas where I'm from. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Senor_Taylor - 09-30-2014 Back home, there is a food lion 3 minutes away. The next closest is Wal-Mart almost 20 minutes away. I guess the inner city food lions might be sketch but the ones where I'm from and in Harrisonburg are just fine. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - ScottyB - 09-30-2014  the food lions near my old place in NC were kindly dubbed "ghetto lions" by my wife and i. only went there for boxed goods like cereal because i'm not paying x2 that at the Whole Foods (Whole Wallet, or PriusFest) down the road. actually watched a drug deal go down in the parking lot one time. that said the one outside my neighborhood is brand new and super nice. Food Lion is upping their game. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - HAULN-SS - 09-30-2014 I think that there are two different food lion stores "types" out there. Didn't they merge with bloom or something? Seems like I heard an explanation on it once. Martins == Giant btw Either way, as I am only shopping for myself, I usually just go to whatever's quicker not cheaper. There's a Fresh Market across from my office that is nicer than wegmans and less crowded so that gets my business most of the time lately. With amazon now delivering all my dry goods, I'll probably just buy my meats and veggies there from now on. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - ScottyB - 09-30-2014 HAULN-SS Wrote:I'll probably just buy my meats and veggies there from now on. if you're just getting that stuff locally is there any kind of farmer's market around you? farm fresh stuff is marginally more expensive and tastes amazeballs if you haven't tried it before. especially the meats/eggs. major downfall is that you're pretty much locked in to shopping on a Saturday morning. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - HAULN-SS - 09-30-2014 I have a ton of canned vegetables from my parent's garden. I don't eat eggs too much, but I do get those occasionally from my neighbor. The meat thing - ehh.. I dunno. I'm with you if I was just going to source a side of beef from a farmer, but that'd take me forever to eat. I'm not sure how much I go for eating farmers market meat that's already been processed when I didn't see the place first. Long story short, I am so busy that I eat out probably at least 50% of the time, so I don't put a whole lot of thought into the grocery shopping option, and will be the first to sign up if peapod (or better) ever makes it to my area. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - .RJ - 09-30-2014 Trader Joes > * Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Kaan - 09-30-2014 GTFO local farmers market > any damn store Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - WRXtranceformed - 09-30-2014 Kaan Wrote:GTFOAgreed, at least for meats/veggies. One of the big local ones has a "meal plan" where you can order meat for your family in bulk. The prices are pretty reasonable for local goods if you are willing to commit to buying that much meat up front. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - Steve85 - 09-30-2014 We split a half steer from a local farm with another family earlier this year. I think it was something like 3.99/lb hanging weight. We got a ton of ground beef which is fairly lean, maybe not 96/4 but definitely better than 88/12. A bunch of NY strips, filets, stew meat (that I actually make "steak bites" with), flank and so on. Bones for the dogs too! It's lean and has a more mild flavor so it takes to seasoning very well. Probably too much meat for one or two people, we are a family of 5 in the house and we split it with another family of 5 and it should last long enough without getting ruined in the freezer. Re: It's Friday and I'm bored - SlimKlim - 09-30-2014 My parents have jumped on the locally-sourced foods bandwagon HARD the past few years. They have a spare full sized fridge and freezer (as in two seperate units about 5.5" tall, not a fridge/freezer combo) and they also have a massive deep freezer. They buy beef and pork in quantities of 1/2 animal, and chickens by the half dozen. They also get their eggs from a friend's farm, buy local honey (apparently eating locally made honey helps with allergies? I dunno) and last time I was there they had found a hookup for raw milk. At the rate they're going, I fully expect to go visit one day and see them in the process of slaughtering something. |
