Taylor we are only all saying this because we have "been there, done that". No matter what you think you are only doing yourself a disservice by not wearing a suit. Don't ask the recruiter what to wear. That is so bush league. Wear a suit to an interview; everyone else will be.

Anyway on to the next topic. People with superiority complexes.

Back story: In my position we (sales reps) partner with local CPAs to refer business back and forth. About 40% of our business comes from the CPA channel with an average closing rate of a little over 60% so it is a very important part of our day to day. Being new means I have to develop these relationships. I start by sending an email and following with a phone call. If that doesn't work I will cold call and see if I can speak to them in person. Most are busy, but their secretaries are nice enough and I try again another day.

I sent an email to a CPA yesterday and happened to be down the street from his office visiting a current client so I thought I would pop in for an introduction. Secretary hits me with "We don't take solicitations here". Well I am not trying to sell you anything just looking to introduce myself. I leave and go on my way.

I get home and see this email from the CPA
Quote:Jon,
I’m a bit put out that you took it upon yourself to visit me today, unannounced. The courteous thing to do would have been to call me first, as you said you would do in your email yesterday. Also, I wasn’t aware that I had requested a (redacted) representative be assigned to me. I am very familiar with (redacted), and should the need arise that a client of mine is looking for payroll services (that I cannot provide), I would consider (redacted) as a potential provider. So, for now, thank you for your interest and good luck.

Okaaaaay brah. If you are that busy and don't have time to see me unannounced that is cool. I realize I am imposing. But you are not nearly important enough to be such a huge prick sending an email like that.

Apparently he thought CPA = CEO

Taking the initiative to ask your customer about their expectations? Sounds great to me.

Backstory: I've interviewed 300+ people at Amazon and I'm less inclined to hire people in a suit.

Taylor - Don't listen to anyone in sales or gubment, unless that's where you plan to work. The companies that care about your contribution above all else won't care what you wear, provided it's obvious that you purposely chose your outfit.

To be fair, your company like a lot of west coast orgs leans pretty far to the left when it comes to worker flexibility (this isn't a criticism, it's the truth). Being Seattle based I'm assuming they don't even drug test? I mean the vast, vast majority of companies are going to ask for a significant level of business professionalism. My first job was in construction (arguably one of THE most casual dressed occupations :lolSmile and I interviewed with every level of my future managers in a suit.

I feel like we're beating dead horses here but do what you want when it comes to dressing yourself in front of a potential future employer. "Better safe than sorry" tends to be a good mantra here though

Why all this hoopla about suits? I like wearing one every now and then. :dunno:

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?! - Ken - 10-27-2016

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, or at least from a search it hasn't.

Motherfuckers who stand on the left side of the escalator, especially when they see that everyone has been walking up the left side. Then get all incredulous and angry when you politely ask them to step to the side.

Also, people who like more than two abreast on the sidewalk. Stop it.

leans pretty far to the left?

Amazon is my fifth company and first on the west coast - my only drug test was my first company: Allstate.

<-- drug tested at every large company I've worked for except the current one

Based on our sample size of two people, there is a high (pun intended) correlation between Lee being the incumbent and a low correlation with geography.

FWIW, Amazon does drug test some populations of employees.

Big difference between choosing to dress up and having to doing so because it impacts perceptions of your job effectiveness. I like dressing up too.... mostly because it pretty much guarantees I'm gonna get laid at the end of the night... but I don't want a job where not wearing a tie makes me unworthy of the job.

I wear a suit everyday and have worn my tux no less than 5 times this year. I used to hate wearing suits but now I enjoy it. Looking dapper as fuck everyday has its perks.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?! - .RJ - 10-27-2016

I enjoy it because I get to choose when.

Every day... fuck, nope, nope, nope, fuck nope.

I don't wear one every day but I do have to wear a tie and sport jacket at least once a week. But when we have cases that are high priority, media covered cases I like to wear a suit. I don't want my ass in the background on the news wearing a shoddily put together outfit.

I get drug tested randomly and anytime a workplace incident happens. I got bitten twice (by the same dog) back in February serving a warrant and pulled my weapon; before I even left the ER after the incident I was notified that I had to take a urine screen before I would be discharged.

That's something that really grinds me gears. I never understood how something like that happening where it is clearly not your fault results in you getting screened. I would be done so quick (for obvious reasons) at a job like that.

I can see your point there, and it's not really fair, but I guess it is expected that we will be clean at all times. Additionally, I think it is looked at as a way to avoid liability for unfortunate incidents; "well he shot this guy but he was dirty for drugs so obviously it was the drugs that caused him to do it."

I judge you for your looks, you are more than welcome to judge me.

Oh wait, is that not politically correct in Portland?
