Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Evan - 03-26-2011 pretty sure its fake, but funny http://www.tothepointnews.com/content/view/3617/85/ Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 03-26-2011 Weapons list from Sucker Punch. Awesome geek movie by the way, it's weird as shit but I highly recommend it...even just for the eye candy and these ridiculous guns: http://www.imfdb.org/w/Sucker_Punch_%282011%29 Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 03-26-2011 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Awesome geek movie by the way +1 Think my favorite part was when the suit thingy flew into the air and worked those planes with the three different guns. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 03-28-2011 Coonan is making their .357 again: ![]() ![]() ![]() Dan Coonan made these through the 80's and 90's, but went bankrupt in 1994. (Hrmm...what else happened in 1994?) Anyway, at SHOT the successor company (which makes excellent FAL receivers) announced that the Coonan .357 Is Back. Basically, it's a <slightly> upsized 1911 that will shoot .357 Magnum. The grip looks a little blockier, but is actually the same dimensions as a standard 1911. The barrel is linkless, which I think was a good move (nobody uses linked barrels anymore EXCEPT for 1911's), the extractor is external (which I prefer) and the trigger assembly is a little different...but otherwise it's basically a big honkin' 1911. I mean sure, you could buy a desert eagle if you wanted a semi auto .357. But this is something you could actually carry. 5" barrel makes it 8" long overall...same as a 1911. Probably too expensive to be worth buying, but still, it's cool Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 03-28-2011 So I got a new gun: It's pretty sweet. It's like a bullpup marlin...it has a 11 round tube magazine that is in the buttstock! Good use of normally 'wasted' space. Breaks in half into 2 16" assemblies, might fit in a big-ish backpack. I'm going to clean it up, and see what kind of a shooter it is. My initial thought is that I might give it to my nephew. He's going to soon be old enough that he should have a gun of his own, even if his mother pees her pants at the thought of it.So I picked this up from Justin this weekend, and only got a real good look at it when I got it home. There's one dent in the stock and a few light scratches that I might try to buff out with a stock polish. The dent *might* be worth trying an iron and a hot washcloth to bring it "up" but I don't want to completely refinish the stock if I can help it. I flipped it over to practice breaking it down and I saw "JUSTIN 1992" lovingly engraved on the bottom of the bolt. Seriously, Justin, I'm going to give you an opportunity to buy this back. I'm going to clean it up, because it's filthy. Disassemble, clean, lube, attach and zero scope, and maybe give the stock a nice polish. You will be charged 50 dollars for this service. Pics will be posted when rifle is available for (optional) pickup. After that, I will do with it what I wish, and you will never, ever, get it back. Probably my most cherished gun is my Grandfather's 20 Gauge. I did not know him very well, he fell dead in a hayfield when I was barely old enough to understand what was going on. First funeral I can remember. I didn't cry until they closed the casket. Many years later, My dad and I are moving some stuff, and come across this very nice Browning 20 gauge BPS. Still had the little warning sticker on the barrel. My dad only has a 22 magnum and a .410, (and the 1911 I gave him) he's not a very big gun guy. My grandfather, though, apparently had many guns in his lifetime. "Son, you left this up here with my guns." No, Dad, it's not mine. "Well, it sure isn't mine...must be Pappy's. He'd want you to have it." It's a link to him, across death, across time, to a man I wish I'd known better. It's not, and never will be, for sale for any price. I'd trade it only to have a day with him as an adult; to know my father's best friend, now gone more than 20 years. I'm serious, Justin. You'll regret selling this. I know you don't "get sentimental" about firearms, you just shoot 'em. But it's not the gun you get sentimental over. It's the man, who when he knew it was time, gave you an item that reflected his trust in you. He will not always be with you, and when he is gone (as we all must go) all that will be left are memories, stardust, and items just like this one. I'll make an announcement when I'm "finished" with it. You have been warned. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Jeff - 03-28-2011 CaptainHenreh Wrote:I'm serious, Justin. You'll regret selling this. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Apoc - 03-28-2011 CaptainHenreh Wrote:Probably my most cherished gun is my Grandfather's 20 Gauge. I just found out a week ago that my dad has my grandfather's Remington 12 gauge. I didn't know the gun even existed before then... heck, I thought I was the first person in my lineage to own a firearm. Apparently the gun floated around between relatives for years after his death in '91 (I was 13) and my dad tracked it down for no other reason than to keep rapid animals off his property. He said "had I know you were looking..." and now I can't wait to get my hands on it to keep for decades. On a related note, I traded my dad's Lionel trains when I was a teenagerfor computer parts. To this day I not only regret it, I feel guilty. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 03-28-2011 I appreciate the offer Rex but really im fine. I have other stuff my grandfather has given me and have more sentimental value than this one. That I wont be parting with. Most importantly the Remington 870, in which he taught me to shoot and I used when we went hunting together. Walked into his house, said thats a cool shotgun, said hes glad I liked it, cause its yours. Not to mention the 50 or so guns my father will be inheriting and indirectly so will I. I dunno, guess im just an asshole, but I would rather you have it, and give it to your nephew so he can enjoy it, instead of it rusting away in its case. I have more memories with my 870 and I actually associate the shotgun with my grandpa, more so then I do with this. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 03-28-2011 white97dsm Wrote:I have other stuff my grandfather has given me and have more sentimental value than this one. Perfectly reasonable. Stay tuned for a refresh/restore of your old gun, then. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Ryan T - 03-28-2011 I agree with the sentimental gun thing. When my father passed (2001) my mother obviously inherited all of his stuff. Over time she has allowed the kids to take things that were important to our father and had centimental value to us. I've got his coin purse, all his military stuff, and 2 or the 3 guns that he taught my twin brother and I to use. Russ was given the Smith & Wesson .38sp revolver. My mother gave me his JR Stevens bolt action .410 and his Ruger 10/22. Even though neither gun is in great shape I still take them out and clean them/shoot them from time to time, and I will never part with them. About 2 years ago my mother showed me a muzzleloader that my father was given by his father; the stock is cracked and cannot support the weight of the gun. My dad intended to restore it but it never ended up happening. I've been meaning to do the same thing, just haven't. I need to find somewhere that carries replacement wood stocks so I can make this into a mantle piece to hang in my office. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 03-30-2011 Officially going pistol shooting for the first time on Saturday! My first outing got rescheduled because the range was too full when we got there. Also swinging by some of the good ole boy shops to try out some guns to buy. I read through the whole gun FAQ so I've got some good advice thanks to Rex, but is there anything else I should know before I pull the trigger (ha ha) on a new gun? Maybe a few suggestions for a good, reliable handgun? I wanted to start with a handgun, but thanks to watching Sons of Guns and the wonderful advice of teh MM community, I want to also eventually own some kind of shotgun and an assault rifle. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 03-30-2011 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Maybe a few suggestions for a good, reliable handgun? #1: "Assault Rifle" generally means a select fire military-only weapon. "Assault Weapon" isn't very good either. A good descriptor is "patrol carbine" or "military style rifle" or really just "carbine". That'll get the point across. #2: Shoot as many handguns as you can. You'll figure out what you like and don't pretty quickly. Think about what features you want also. The big "division" among handguns right now is the "Striker-fired" guns (Glock, S&W M&P) vs hammer fired (H&K, FN, Classic Smith, Beretta, SIG, etc). I actually prefer hammers, but carry a striker gun. The hammer guns tend to have better triggers, while the striker guns *may* be more reliable. You'll also need to decide if you want an all-metal gun or if you don't mind a plastic frame. The plastic frame is easier to care for, and lighter. But it's godless. My short list of "Best" 9MM poly-frame handguns, though: H&K P30 (not USP, though they're OK...p30 mo betta) S&W M&P9 SIG P2202 Glock 17 FN FNP9/FNX9 (same gun) If you want a metal frame, it boils down to three choices for me: Beretta 92 with DECOCKER ONLY (none of that safety decocker bullshit), Pick-your-SIG Sauer, or: The CZ75 SP01: ![]() UNF. Gotta get back to my CZ roots one of these days... Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 03-30-2011 Awesome advice man thanks! As far as firing them goes though...what's the best way to go about that? I know gun ranges rent guns, but do most gun stores have their own range that you can try them out at? And they're not ok with you dry firing the gun right without some kind of primer cap or something? Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 03-30-2011 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Awesome advice man thanks! As far as firing them goes though...what's the best way to go about that? And they're not ok with you dry firing the gun right without some kind of primer cap or something? I mean, most of the time you find friends who have the guns you want to shoot and you ask if you can shoot them. Most gun stores do NOT have a range, but many that do tend to have their most popular models available for rent. And no, you don't need a "snap cap" to fire most modern centerfire handguns. It's always polite to ask before dry firing a gun, but if they say "No" then you need to leave and go to a REAL gun store that actually GIVES A SHIT about its customers. Actually firing isn't nearly as important as comfort in the hand and good trigger feel. It's almost impossible to go out and fire every gun you might consider, even if that is the best way to do it. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 03-30-2011 Nice! I will report back with the experience and if I end up picking something up I will of course post it up. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 03-30-2011 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Nice! I will report back with the experience and if I end up picking something up I will of course post it up. Ok. A note: DO NOT BUY A 4TH GEN GLOCK. That's the newest with the 'adjustable' back strap. You can see the difference in the back straps here: (4th gen on the right) Anyway, they're shit. Don't buy one. 3rd gen glocks are still being sold, buy one of those if you must have a glock. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 03-30-2011 What's the difference, what exactly is the back strap? That thing with the notch on the top right? Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 03-30-2011 WRXtranceformed Wrote:What's the difference, what exactly is the back strap? That thing with the notch on the top right? Yeah, you see the line that starts most of the way up the grip, and goes down to the bottom? That's removable and you can replace it with a larger or smaller one. That's actually a good thing. Too bad the rest of the gun is crap. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - WRXtranceformed - 03-30-2011 Good to know. I have heard mixed results on Glocks, mostly that they are a little unsafe in terms of the lack of multiple safeties on them. But I mean it is a means of defense...I don't want to get too hung up on safeties when it needs to be fired in a high pressure situation. Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Goodspeed - 03-30-2011 CaptainHenreh Wrote:Too bad the rest of the gun is crap. How so? I felt one of those up a while back and liked it, I just never pulled the trigger on it (hyuck) and bought it :dunno: |
