Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - Kaan - 10-13-2015

They might let you write off a car once... But never twice for any issue on track. I've seen guys have the tow truck take them out on the road and slide them in a ditch lol

yes. just being on a "racing surface" is enough for many companies to deny you. as Kaan said some guys get away with fixing up a story about hitting a deer or whatever after trailering the wreck off the track, but you're rolling a massive set of dice.

by their definition an HPDE falls under practicing/preparing for an organized speed contest. whether you can define an HPDE as a "contest" is a moot point unless you have the money to take them to court over it i guess.

there are track-specific insurance companies that will insure you for a weekend, for these exact situations. its expensive, but if its worth it for your peace of mind then just budget with it in mind.

i wouldn't even call your insurance company asking about this stuff...its going to set off some red flags related to your inquiry should you ever actually report a claim, legit or not.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-13-2015

Yup, like I said mine from their definition can't. I'm just saying they need to be more specific because someone could easily beat that general definition. From NASA website:

Accidents

Body damage to cars very rarely occurs, however you are encouraged to check with your insurance company regarding coverage. Most insurance companies cover damages to your car during the HPDE. Be careful if they tell that it is not covered. Agents have been wrong before. Ask them for a list of "exclusions" in YOUR policy and consult an expert.

If I was going to ask I'd make someone else call to ask for me. For sure not going to ask by myself

b. practicing or preparing for (so HPDE where you are practicing racing skills?)

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-13-2015

Does it say skills though? Implying something and directly saying something is all context in a law. Like I said insurance companies should be more specific I bet beating their exclusion could be done not that I'm care to do it.

If my car is totaled on track it is totaled. Oh well. Just thought I'd check anyways.

It clearly says "practicing or preparing for..."

What do you think an HPDE is?

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-13-2015

One could say it is drivers education like in the name just like other drivers education courses that train you in defensive or tactical driving.

Is taking a defensive driving course or small driving school that has you drive around a small paddock or course not preparing you for driving better and safer like an HPDE?

Good luck fighting the insurance company. Hope your pockets are deep.

Don't plan to. If something happens and I try and they say no I'll just be like k and move on. Not worth it for sure. Just having rules implying shit is dumb.

Just thought I'd bring it up and see if people have stories of it working or not.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - navin - 10-13-2015

Didn't Evan get his insurance to cover some damage occured on track in his WRX? This was a long time ago, and I'm sure insurance companies are more in the know on what DE weekends are.

I've had a friend get the Lockton coverage and total his car at VIR. They paid him out quite nicely..

Yes, someone in this club has gotten it I remember someone saying that and have seen people online but I'm sure 80-90% of companies don't allow and I bet even some have explicit no coverage of HPDE in their rules.

I've heard great things about Lockton. If I had a car that was worth more than $8k.... I'd think it would be worth it haha.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - navin - 10-14-2015

They cover aftermarket modifications as well, assuming you have receipts, etc.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-14-2015

My most expensive mods (Wheels and Ground Controls) were bought second hand so that doesn't help me haha.

Proof Sheet sent to me by Chris: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tffu6zc6auil ... G_0788.JPG

Too many good pics to narrow down to a few to buy.... send help. :dunno:

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - ScottyB - 10-14-2015

i thought 7 was pretty good...nice dynamic angle, showing some tire lift and tuck. there are some other nice ones but they all have something distracting in the background.

i bought a shot from FinishLine last year at my VIR track weeked (my first one, i mean i pretty much had to) and honestly most of the shots were really subpar or out of focus. its too bad guys like FlimFlam don't handle HPDE photos.

Yeah I think I've narrowed it down to 3 photos and 7 was included.

Finishline does a great job at making the car look like it's sitting still on track.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-15-2015

Bored at work. Decided to make a list of things that I hope to be done by the first event next year. Let me know how it looks

1. Safety shit

a. 4-Point Roll bolt in roll bar w/harness bar from Autopower
i) Having a fellow 2nd gen owner that tracks their car test fit the 2nd gen bar October 31st-November 6th in Cali where
Autopower is located. Will be able to pick one up any time after that

b. Race Seats
ii) Driver: Sparco Pro 2000 seat (only Sparco seat that will fit on the brackets besides the Sprint seat) with bottom mount wedge brackets (only brackets that are known to fit my car without going custom for Sparco's)
iii) Passenger: Corbeau FX1 Wide with Corbeau double locking sliding brackets

c. OG Racing 5-point harnesses (cam lock vs. latch one is just prettier than another? Latches don't take much more time to close. Maybe a few seconds?)

d. Hans (should I just grab one right away or wait?)

2. Brake ducts (this will follow a 1st gen owners experience of what works best). I'm not having cooling issues but might as well start this.

a. Universal rectangle inlets from that will be custom fit into my weird angled fog lights.

b. 3" High Temp Ducting

c. 3" to 2" Reducer

d. 2" High Temp Ducting sitting on LCA to closest possible point to the back of the rotor (this is the best we can do with
this car)

3. New Rear Endlinks

a. Old endlinks are rusted and will probably need to be cut. New Moog endlinks and moving rear sway to stiffest setting
at 901 lbs/in

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - Jake - 10-15-2015

You need to get fitted for the seat and make sure your shoulders line up with the shoulder hole openings for the harnesses. Don't blindly go picking a seat model without knowing how you fit. If you've sat in one of those Sparcos and the harness holes are at the right height for you, then go for it. Otherwise hang tight until you get to sit in some things. Figure out what you fit in correctly and then figure out how to make it fit the car.

I will have my Corbeau FX1 Pro seat for sale in a matter of weeks. It's currently used on the driver's side and I'd sell it to ya cheap.

Buy the harnesses from Matt's new-to-him M3. Already told him you were in the market. Cam lock >>> latch. Latches are a GIANT pain and the cost between the two shouldn't be that different. Get the right stuff.

If you can swing the HANS now (base price for the "cheap" one - price is dependent on weight/materials - is like $500) then yes, do it. The HANS protects you front-to-back, a halo seat protects you side-to-side. Nobody ever crashed and said "damn, that HANS really wasn't worth the price."

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-15-2015

My hope was to sit in a 2000 if they had one on display at Summit. If they didn't sit in the Evo and compare measurements between the Evo and 2000 while in the store.

Harness wise it is $110 difference between the two.

And if I can save money on the seats like buy Matt's or something since he said he was selling them. I could easily buy a hans.

Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - Jake - 10-15-2015

Get used harnesses from Matt or otherwise, save that money vs. new so you can get cam-lock.

I'll let you know when I pull my Corbeau to see if you want it for the passenger side.
