Not Direct Injection.

Blow by is a possibility, pulling my IC should help diagnose this. Most blow by smoke happens immediately on startup. I don't think I should be getting that much blow-by for the past 3-4 days with my setup, powerlevels and driving style. Every once in a while sure, as it builds up overtime, but I am not driving at full boost and 10/10ths, so blow-by should be minimal.

Ringlands seem to be upon immediate startup, and again is showing no other symptoms (rough idle, smoke at every startup, smoke from oil filler, oil consumption)

Turbo makes sense, crack or deteriorating seal, leaks fluid on hot side. Temp of turbo has to increase before it can burn off, explaining why it has to idle for 1-2 minutes before the smoke appears. Seals expand due to heat and minimal size of crack or leak, ending smoke show.

I know nothing about these motors but if I was having that problem in a SBC I would think about valve seals. Sitting overnight - weeping oil into the cylinders, clears after startup.

Re: Project: AWD TURBO Family Hauler (04 Forester 2.5XT) - JustinG - 07-10-2014

I thought that as well...but if oil had leaked into the cylinders it would have ignited immediately upon startup. Not 1-2 minutes after running right?

Re: Project: AWD TURBO Family Hauler (04 Forester 2.5XT) - ViPER1313 - 07-13-2014

It might be another bad head gasket..

Start car - coolant is not under pressure, does not leak past head gasket.
Car starts to heat up - coolant begins to seep into cylinder due to pressurized coolant system.
Car heats up, metal expands and effectively seals the leak.

The Camry would leak the worst 3 to 10 minutes after startup, then stop leaking when the engine reached temperature.

What does the car do if you run it for a couple minutes, stop the motor while it is smoking, wait for it to cool down (20 minutes or so) and then start it back up? Huge cloud of smoke or no smoke? On my Camry, the plug would foul out when you did this because the coolant would continue to leak into the cylinder after the car stopped.

Hasn't smoked the whole weekend. Also no smoke if I just jump in and take off, not letting it idle. I dunno wtfbbq

Maybe water vapor from the pipes / cat.... It has been humid as of late. Just because it's warm doesn't mean no white smoke when it's humid.

Re: Project: AWD TURBO Family Hauler (04 Forester 2.5XT) - JustinG - 07-14-2014

Yea. Just never happened before. But I dont let it idle very often like that. Im assuming all is ok until catastrophic failure.

Re: Project: AWD TURBO Family Hauler (04 Forester 2.5XT) - JustinG - 09-16-2014

Enter failure.....not catastrophic though.

I started to notice a bit more smoke last Wednesday. When sitting in a fast food drive thru, I noticed a good amount of smoke at idle that did not stop. Got home, let it idle, a little more smoke and it stopped.

Thursday afterwork I head to the grocery store just down the street, notice smoke as I am leaving. Get home, and the smoke continues. Let it sit overnight, crank it up, and the smoke show continues.

All signs point to a blown turbo, which isn't surprising, as most td04s don't go much past 100k, at 114k on my car it was past due.

So, I could refurb the td04, orrrrr go vf39. Just so happens a friend has a vf39 for cheap, and I picked up an STi top mount off a friend of Adam Flint's.

Placing an order worth subaru for the necessary gaskets, and I need to find a 04-07 STi or 06-08 XT BOV.

Probably gonna do silicone turbo inlet and post maf tube. Since the plastic parts will more than likely break upon removal. Trying to decide if I can trust ebay parts enough for this.

So stand by for pretty pics and a Stage 3 Forester.

Damn your cheap turbo upgrade... going K04 in the Audi wagon is going to be $5k Sad

yeah but we usually pay the "asploded tranny" tax at some point along the way

anyway, sorry Justin...but not really, this is going to be awesome

Did I mention it was $150?

Re: Project: AWD TURBO Family Hauler (04 Forester 2.5XT) - JustinG - 09-16-2014

Slippery slope.....I think instead of a turbo inlet I am gonna order a full length hose that goes from the turbo all the way to the maf.

Stock setup is a 2 piece setup. Turbo to accordion pipe to maf.

Vs

This AVO piece is full length.

Just to make sure... Have you tried replacing the PCV? I would do that before replacing the turbo....

Of all the posts to make a return you tell him NOT to upgrade the turbo!!?!? Channel your inner dsm.

Pcv was replaced during head gaskets

Re: Project: AWD TURBO Family Hauler (04 Forester 2.5XT) - ViPER1313 - 09-17-2014

Sorry.... 80 trim something or bust. Think cummins diesel sized.

I lurk here all the time, I just don't know how to reply to the countless BMW discussions.

The proper MM reply to anything Euro is "LOL Eurotrash, you should buy a Subaru, they're reliable".

I'm not sure how to reply to the threads in which Subarus break, after commentary like that.

Re: Project: AWD TURBO Family Hauler (04 Forester 2.5XT) - JustinG - 09-17-2014

If I could just leave shit alone......it wouldn't break.
