I'd rather not see how slow I am  Is this a good deal? More info please. I'll look it up anyways just wondering. Edit: $50 off a new product. Hmm. I don't know if I can purchase this right now if I want to run both HPDEs this season for NASAMA. I already booked a hotel for Octoberfast and was going to purchase HPDE2 slot this week. Especially with purchasing the new tires this week as well. Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - Kaan - 09-23-2015 ball'n! i'd save up and make sure you have it in the car when you go solo full time (later in 2 and all through 3). it will help you learn what lines were the "best" if you are systematic Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 09-23-2015 Kaan Wrote:ball'n! Yeah when I actually have a salary would be a good time to get this or use a small part of sign on bonus (rest is being saved). I think I want to pick up my own helmet before a timer too. I don't care about my times at this point as long as my instructor says I'm doing well and I feel like I'm doing well. I don't push my car 9/10ths right now for it to matter anyways. Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - D_Eclipse9916 - 09-23-2015 The earlier you have it the better. But thats my personal opinion. You already have a couple weekends under your belt to learn safety. Christina Lam was my instructor and she pushed me to do things I didn't think I was capable of yet. Overall Oktoberfast was a great event. I got my taste of trail braking mostly at 1, 4, and oak tree. It made everything feel just so right. I've definitely picked up a lot of speed in places and I'm running a good enough of a line. I just need to start to practice left foot braking sometime. The car had no issues thankfully. Brakes still doing well. For example, hitting 110 on the front straight and braking at marker 3 consistently for each session with no issues. Brake wear is minimal as well. No engine issues, no weird noises nothing. This car has been amazing. Hoping it keeps chugging along. The new tires are great. The grip levels on these things are insanity for a "200" tw street tire. They definitely let you know when you are at the limit they scream loudly but they seem to still have more grip even when they are squealing. They are definitely a lot louder overall when driven on the street. Something I'll just deal with because they've given me a lot more confidence out there to pick up a lot of speed. Christina and I talked some. I've been told I'm good to go for HPDE2 Solo. She says she was really impressed with me. Consistency, spotting my own errors, my line, speed, etc... she says she believes I'm ready to start timing and comparing to get faster at this point. She also notices I could gain some speed by adding seats and harnesses. She sees I'm holding on for dear life on the steering wheel. I'm pretty stuck on what to do here. There is no way I'm getting a real race car for probably another year or two. With the pace I'm at I would not be surprised if I'll be in DE3 during summer if I go to every event. With that I really want to add safety to my car. 4 point cage (roll bar), seats, etc... And I want the safety because I want to push the car more. I really would like to see how this car would do in TTE or PTE. I think it would be pretty competitive there or it won't be. I won't know until I try. Yeah I know not many people track this car in this region. I won't have spare parts if something happens, etc... This is why I plan on picking up a truck/suv and trailer first. I'm picking up enough speed now in DE2 alone to have me worry about safety. I'll talk to Christina more and see if she thinks I need some more safety and report back after I see people saying I'm wasting my time with this car. Why I keep playing with this idea about keeping this car for a bit is because I honestly don't know what I want to get into. I don't want to end up buying a damn 20k race car and not like it. I'd rather just beat the piss out of this cheap little econo shitbox I have and throw some safety on it and see where I want to go. It will take some time before I know what I'll want obviously and I'm going to have to decide on things and try new things. Hopefully ride along or having someone let me drive their car will help. So far e36 just seem meh to me. Maengs s2k piqued my interest even when we were going not as fast when it was raining. I just don't know. TL;DR Oktoberfast was cool, no problems, and I don't know what I want to do in the future. Edit: Talked to Christina, she gave me a number to Carlos. I see where the conflict is, as far as "what to do now" - you are definitely approaching a crossroads. The good thing with seats is that you can move them to another car later. The problem with adding a roll bar is that if you weld it in, you are now only selling that car to someone else who wants to track it, and you have the issue of not many people tracking these cars. A bolt-in, if they make them for your chassis, would be easy to add in a day, and if you save the interior bits, you could always plug the holes you drill and return the car to stock later. That said, if you like the car and want to keep pressing on, then fuckin' do it. It can fit in TT/PT as you said, there will be competition in whatever form. Hell, there was a guy (I think in PTE) with an Escort ZX2 this weekend and Todd Reid used to race a Probe. I've seen a fully-built Protege, too. You can go down the rabbit hole, just think about it long and hard first. I think keeping/building the Mazda, or selling for a different car are both viable options at this point. Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-12-2015 Yeah, Christina sent me the number to Carlos C. Autopower makes one for first gen. They are willing to test fit for the 2nd gen but need a car in SD, Cali to do it. I've been trying different FB groups to get people to do it. They are NASA built and have bolt in or welded. She said I could run a bolt in roll bar and should be fine. Yes, moving the seats as long as they fit would be great down the road. Only time will tell what I want to do. Will just have to see how it goes. Oh yeah I'm having tons of fun. I love flying up on people in turns. Yeah the cars with 300-600hp fly by on straights and can get annoying but I won't be in competition with them. I was running up on those miatas in my group that were 2 solo, Integra and the one civic. Most of these people obviously lack experience though or maybe they don't and they are just slow? Who knows. The only way to tell is actually timing myself. And yes I could find some cheap part spares which is nice. My 1st gen friend and 2nd gen friend who track their car have said there isn't much that breaks on these things just regular maintenance parts. I'll go pester them for more information. See: dropped SE46 and went back to GTS for fun. Re: Project 2.Slow Mazda3 - rherold9 - 10-13-2015 So I'm getting faster just in case of a wreck I'm looking at insurance coverage. This is all they have under for "racing". Is an HPDE enough to deny me coverage? Serious question. I honestly am not in competition school so I don't think this technically could apply but they could make some bullshit general saying that it does.... HPDE's are not technically preparing for racing although could be seen to do so. That's where the comp school argument comes into play. Thoughts? I know it is stupid to ask I just want to be sure because I should be willing to lose the car...
