I don't know Subie parts but the people that complain about BMW parts prices are usually the ones that shuffle up to the dealer's parts counter with a list as long as their forearms, then bitch for the rest of their lives that BMW parts are a ripoff.
For example "list" price for an OEM radiator on my car is $350. I paid $150 for an over sized all aluminum unit from eBay that keeps the car running just a tick cooler. OEM front brake rotors are $150 each, off brand blanks are like $50 each. You just gotta know where to buy your parts.

You pay too much for rotors. Rock Auto - $28 a rotor...
Just checked, they some now for $22.79 a rotor...
The E36 is the civic of the bmw world. Cheap including parts. That said, you can easily spend a lot if you want high quality stuff. (Think the "spoon" parts of the civic world). I am a huge cheap ass, there is a reason I run E36s

scoobs are tough cars but they definitely have a few weak spots just like any car. the problem is that they aren't as simple as a lot of Japanese cars, which have a reputation for being anvil reliable, and subarus are really only now becoming more "mainstream"...so you end up paying a bit for the parts or maintenance expertise. it doesn't help that this mentality means the performance ones usually get rawdogged and then put away totally wet.

I liked the RegularCarReviews guy's take on Subaru reliability. They really are no more or less reliable than any other car, but the brand has built up a reputation of being completely bulletproof, largely because the enthusiasts and owners shout down anyone who says otherwise.
Every car ever made has strengths and weaknesses. Even Honda. Honda's engineers just predicted them and made the cars easy to take apart. Like how my TSI has a little tensioner issue and the whole goddamn side of the motor has to come off, the Honda motors with a similar affliction have a handy little cover you can pop off to get to it.
Hope the repairs go smoothly and the bill isn't too hard to swallow. At least after this you know that car has a whole lot of life left in it for you! That's what I tell myself I'm working towards on my heap of crap.

I honestly cannot complain. I have had a great track record with my cars and reliability. Aside from RSONPSI, which was my own fault, this is the first serious issue I have encountered with any car as far as reliability is concerned.

That car will always hold a special place in my heart. I *think* it was the first turbo'd car I ever rode in that wasn't a diesel or something "ordinary". You may speak ill of it, but I'll continue to remember it fondly in all its rally fog-lit, blue-accented interior goofiness :wink:
