I figured I'd dodge that bullet as best as I could and just go 2003.5+...though it seems some people do those at high mileage anyway. Doing new bearings during the summer though. Fawk this cold. I have it now, Joey had it sitting in his garage waiting for me to pick up. I never knew he had it (or forgot?) but I have it now if you were wondering where it was. Let me know if you need it back. I am going to do my mom's shortly here, last night we knocked out an O2 sensor that went bad and changed spark plugs/air filter/cabin air filter while Joey/Jake were over doing Matts car as well. Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - SlimKlim - 01-06-2014 Sorry! Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - Beej - 04-09-2014 I think I've all but decided to have my rear end reinforcements welded in by a local shop, assuming they can convince me it'll last/not rust/etc. The rosette weld style of Redish Motorsports' plates are the selling point over epoxying. I don't think I've had a shop turn wrenches on it and I hate to break a good streak, but 1) I ain't welding it, 2) I'd probably take a bunch of parts to a shop to have bushings pressed, and 3) I hate seating seals and don't have air so I'd have them do my diff input seal anyway. Still gotta order the plates, miscellaneous bushings, maybe camber arms. So, Justin recommended Delta V or PAS. My main concern here is that by welding, I'm only asking for the back end of the car to rust - so considering some e46's go 150k without subframe issues...this is a massive job and better last the life of the car. Does anyone know which shop has more experience with BMW's (and presumably, has done this before)? Better yet, any personal connections? The kit I'm getting is new and has a different style of welding than any others and it'd nice to 1) show them why/how and 2) maybe get a little more convinced that this thing is gonna last forever. I'd rather not but I'll take it to someplace out of the area (RRT?) for a better job and peace of mind. Also, I was going through old photos and just realized how similar the style of modifications are to what I did to my first e30: .Ha. Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - D_Eclipse9916 - 04-09-2014 I am sure Delta V can handle it. That said, RRT does have a ton of experience with E46 M3s. Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - navin - 04-09-2014 I'm an idiot and meant to post my original comments in DJ's thread... too much eurotrash around these parts lately  Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - JustinG - 04-09-2014 DeltaV specializes in Euro. PAS knows track cars. I dont think you can go wrong with either. Just call em up and ask if they have ever done it. I would find it hard to believe either have not considering the amount of BMW track cars they handle for nasa ma in this area. Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - JPolen01 - 04-09-2014 Thought of Bimmerworld? No idea on location to you or cost. Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - Beej - 07-07-2014 House projects continue to take time and energy away from this thing, but I got under it for the first time in a long while over the weekend. Still haven't ordered rear reinforcement plates, but the diff has been leaking more and more lately so I decided to at least tackle that. I was very pleased with how quickly it came out, but since I don't mess with seals that aren't easily accessible, I'll drop it off at Delta V to have that bit done. I have a lot of while-you're-in-there parts - CSB, guibo, shifter bushings, fuel filter, tranny mounts - so I guess I might as well tackle the rusty exhaust bolts (section 1->2 bolts look nasty) and get in there. ![]() Will be pleased to not have to worry about ruining the diff or look at those stupid drips anymore. Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - ScottyB - 07-07-2014 good call on having pros do the seals...thats not a job i'd wanna do twice for a part that lives buried up under the car. i never really realized how meaty those front tires are until seeing them off the ground just now. mmmmm....beefy Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - Beej - 07-09-2014 Well that escalated quickly, and I've reduced my junk t-shirt pile by a substantial amount. ![]() I knew I'd be removing most of that, but after speaking with Delta V and PAS about subframe reinforcement (happy to share privately what they said should anyone be considering this stupid job; I'd rather not pass on a shop's word publicly), I decided to take it all down to at least have a peek. My rule was: if I have a crack, I'd bolt it all back up, order Redish plates, and have someone weld it all up. If there were no cracks, I would order Turner plates and epoxy them. Good news is - after admittedly only spending a few minutes cleaning up and inspecting each mount - I'm quite pleased to say that I can't find any cracks and the factory spot welds look undisturbed. So I'll order the Turner plates and all that epoxy jazz. As it stands, the lists are as such (this list is as much for me to refer to as it is asking for input/recommendations): Definitely will do - have parts:
Definitely will do - need to order:

ScottyB Wrote:mmmmm....beefyHaha yeah man. Barely fits = fits! Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - Sully - 07-09-2014 So did BMW add a baseball hat for the diff to wear in the e46? I always thought the eye diff would perform better with some ray bans Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - Beej - 07-21-2014 Jesus wept. That was a TON of work. All buttoned up save for a muffler and some underbody panels, and had a wonderful shakedown run. Really missed driving the thing. In my quest to find a local place that would do an alignment on a car with a modified suspension, I ran into a NASA instructor who knew Maeng. Funny. I need to get the rear realigned - last time I got one done, I dropped it off at a decent race shop and said "mostly street, with a handful of autoxes and maybe an HPDE or two a year." They gave me 0 toe up front and 1/8" total toe-OUT in the rear (if I'm reading the printout correctly). According to what I'm reading on e36/46 forums, it seems I should shoot more for a little toe-in in the rear, like 1/8" total. Bueller? Re: Used to be on a poster in my dorm: 2005 M3 - Maengelito - 07-22-2014 Beej Wrote:Jesus wept. That was a TON of work. Hmmm, who was the alignment guy that knew me? As far as your alignment, I'm not sure about E46 M3s but you will get a little bit more stability mid corner in the rear with the rear toed-in. If its toed-out, it should be a little looser. But it really all depends on what you're settings are at all four corners. And thanks for the advice on the rear toe! It never felt too tail happy with a little toe-out, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it feels with it reversed. Car is driving excellently, aside from a rattle in the back that I'm hoping is something exhaust related. Speaking of exhaust...I put the Scorza back on and am quite pleased with it now (assuming it's not the cause of the rattle). I did three things; 1) had the formerly black tips Jet-Hotted nice and shiny, 2) re-drilled the mounting points, and 3) re-adjusted and re-riveted the tips that were a little cockeyed. It ain't perfect, but it's SO much better than before. Doesn't hit the heat shield when cold or the bumper when hot, and just looks much much better. Apparently the only before picture I can find (nasty gap between bumper and tips): ![]() And then after a few tweaks: ![]() Also, had to swing by the stealership to get an o-ring for a leaky coolant sensor...lucky me, I got to see my first F80 M3 in person. When I have time, it sounds like they're willing to let me take it for a spin. ![]()

Just about 4 wonderful years on the dot. So...56k miles, all while working from home. :dunno: ![]() Took it down to Jacksonville for a wedding last week as its first long shakedown run after the Subframe Shenanigans of 2014. Car felt great, but had a slight rattle only 1) dropping below idle during takeoff and 2) when the car was warm...which hinted towards the exhaust. ![]() I love actually finding the rattle I'm looking for. At some point that bolt backed out, and it was in a real awkward place to get it back in without moving the exhaust. Speaking of which, my now-perfectly-mounted exhaust tips might be just a bit too high - it looks like the exhaust might be hitting the heat shield that little bolt holds up, and that I'll have to drop it down maybe 1/2" at the tips to get ~1/4" more clearance at that point. If that's the only problem I come across after taking everything behind the transmission out and putting it back in, I'll be over the moon. //TODO:
And finally, gotta stop letting life get in the way and just get out to more damn events. |
